Some questions about eating in the future
Matt Z replied to Jpsl1028's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1. Sure, but do you really want to? The sleeve is easily defeated, and once you realize you can tolerate the things you shouldn't... it makes it that much harder to avoid them. Not saying that's what's going to happen with you, but, it's a risk anytime you go back to eating the foods you really shouldn't be eating. 2. Eh... should you. Yes, but we should be chewing to puree even without WLS. Will you benefit from it, sure. Will not doing so cause "issues", it could. But this is also another individual situation. Try to keep up the practice but if you don't do it always... you should be fine. 3. Totally normal to not feel fluids at all. Even with my bypass, thin fluids do very little to nothing to induce "full" feelings. 4. You actually want this to be a "no". The whole idea of the restriction is to prevent you from eating the same amounts as before. If you can eat anywhere near what you could before, you've effectively reversed your surgery. 5. Totally! The calories we actually need verses what we typically consume, are greatly different. If you haven't, look into your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) it's the amount of calories your body needs just to exist. Think in a coma, alive, but not moving, that's your BMR. BMR decreases with age and with weight. So the older and thinner you are, the less calories you require. For example. When I was 32, 5 foot 9 and 370 lbs, my BMR was 3029.8 to 2609 (depending on which BMR Calculator you use). Today, at 39, still 5 foot 9, but only 248 lbs, my BMR is 2222.14-2020. So, as we lose weight, we actually require less calories per day. -
How long off work/disability?
Matt Z replied to Happy2lose13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I took 2 months for my band. And 2 months for my revision. 2 different jobs, no issues from either with taking the 2 months. The extra 2 weeks of unstressed healing really make an amazing difference. -
Personally I'd stick with your prescribed diet plan for at least 6 months.

Sigh. Ok. What surgery are you looking into? Why are you looking into that surgery? Why is your wife not supportive? Like, exactly what issues does she have with the surgery you've decided upon? If you don't know, might be a good time to sit down and find out what she's against and why. Being open and honest is the only way to go here, going out on a limb, I'm going to say she's not "unsupportive", she's more scared about your decision. But that's just my call, I mean, I don't know either of you and you've given us zero information other than she's not supportive. More info would certainly make things entire thread more useful.

Losing my eyebrows?!?!!
Matt Z replied to madscientistmommy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hair loss is common, however it's not exactly "hair loss" in the normally used sense. Your hair is thinning because surgery caused your body to trigger a "rest phase" on more hair follicles than would normally be at rest. When they reactivate, they shed the hair they were holding. This appears to be "hair loss" in reality it's just a larger percentage of the normal shed process happening at once due to the surgery. Good news is, the condition is seldom permanent and re-growth typically is complete. It's just going to take some time to get all that hair back to your preferred length. I'd avoid any cosmetic tattooing for at least 6 months to a year to allow your body to get back to normal. I'd hate to hear that you had the tattooing, then your hair grew back and it looks silly or funny now. -
What surgery did you have? Because that can change answers to these types of questions.

The first month or so was a struggle. The hormonal changes, the surgery, the healing, the massive changes in diet. I had some days where I questioned my choice. Days where missing foods lead to some depressive feelings. And I'm not going to lie, I'm 3 months 12 days right now, and I've been through a butt load of stalls. My latest lasted 10 days... it was maddening. But, the depression and second guessing, faded away. The stall, broke. My weight... started dropping again. Trust the process, follow those instructions to the letter and understand that the struggle, is *so* worth it! Stay strong. You got this! Ugh ^^THIS^^ I wish people would attempt to search or even just look at the forum for a few seconds. I get it's tough, and everyone wants personalized answers to their specific stall, but it all boils down to either folks aren't tracking and are not following their diets. Or their bodies are adjusting to the new normal and recalibrating itself, which can cause a stall. But overall... Stall *will* happen. As long as you are doing everything you are actually supposed to be doing, then you'll be fine. Ok, I have to ask. Your callout said you had surgery in 2014. But, you keep saying you haven't had WLS yet. Which is it?

Lightheadedness can be caused by quite a few things. Dehydration is one. Abnormal heart rhythm is another. Low Blood pressure. Low blood sugar. Have you called your surgeon or PCP? If you can't place why you are lightheaded and dizzy, it might be a good idea to call in the professionals.

Whereas this sucks. Sadly, weight discrimination is *NOT* a protected class in the US. http://time.com/4883176/weight-discrimination-workplace-laws/ So, unless you live in Michigan, EEO and Discrimination laws do not protect use from weight discrimination. https://www.employmentlawfirms.com/discrimination-at-work/overweight-obese-employee-discrimination.htm

Zero issues with my CPAP, I've had one for almost 10 years now. For anyone that "hates" it... you should look into another style/type of mask and I swear by hose management! I've got a beard too so my choices for mask are greatly reduced. If you haven't, check out CPAP.com for your needs. I've got particular filters, humidification, hose management, mask cushions, etc. There are many ways to make the CPAP (or APAP or BiPAP) so much more comfortable! At this point, I really can't sleep without it!

Just don't make a big deal about it, use brush off, short closed ended answers. I've made a diet change. I'm eating better. ETC. Things that answer without providing too much and aren't open for additional questions typically.

Alert the MRI staff to the surgery, and that's really it. There shouldn't be any issues at all, if the surgery was performed with the proper medical grade components, you'll have no issues.

Ok. So you are a whole 2 weeks out of surgery. You aren't properly healed up yet. You still haven't started real foods yet. I'm sure you haven't been cleared for extensive exercising yet either. Just relax and don't worry about any stall. Are you hitting your protein requirements yet? Are you hitting your water requirements yet? Are you exercising at all yet? Our bodies require water to process and reduce fat stores. So without enough water, the process either doesn't happen or isn't efficient enough to matter. What you need to worry about in the first month, is that A ) you don't have any pain or other complications. B ) you are taking the time to rest and heal. C ) that you are working to, or getting your protein and water minimums D ) you are walking or doing other approved exercises, working up to more each day. Everything else can wait. If you are hitting your marks, and exercising. Then just step back and let the process happen. You got this!

Tips on breaking the sugar addiction
Matt Z replied to AdiosAnnie300's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I worked pre-op to reduce my sugar intake, I took the slow reduction approach. I used to put 4 packets of sugar in my daily coffee. I worked down to only 1 by gradually reducing the sugar added. Now I don't even use sugar in my coffee, I just add some of the sugar free flavored creamers and I'm good now. The whole "cold-turkey" approach didn't seem appealing or sustainable since it wasn't allowing me to ween off the sugars. So, I took the step down approach and it's served me quite well. Good luck! -
Ok dude, time to move along. The only person in the wrong here, is you. But you clearly can't see reality through your delusions. Enjoy whatever fantasy world you live in. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Dude, it's all you. And no, I haven't had a sleeve.I mean, a few seconds of research can show you what I've been through, which surgeries I've had, etc. But you'd rather just assume. And someone asking for advice is under exactly zero obligation to follow anyone's suggestion, why are you so butt hurt that Taylor's not agreeing with your opinion? Because, that's all it is, for advice, it's your opinion. You don't know the OP, you aren't Taylor's doctor, you've got no reason to care if the OP listens to you? Says more about you than anything. Seems like a dumb reason to leave. But that's just my opinion. You do whatever you have to do. Congrats on almost making your goal. Good luck with keeping it off. Enjoy your new found time!

Dude... I can see why you have a negative reputation rating now. You know what's wrong, getting mad at someone that's not doing exactly what you say, good intentions or not, you are not only being rude and aggressive, you are being childish and unsupportive. What's worse is that you can't even see how negative you really are. I feel bad for you actually. So delusioned that you think someone else is wrong because you are being controlling. You need some help bro.

It's crazy how many different ways surgeons do things, I've had the Band and Bypass and haven't had a single drain. Was your bypass not laparoscopic?

Congrats! You appear to be missing several key, required items on that Class A uniform....

Comorbidities and weight loss approval
Matt Z replied to bunnygirl650's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your doctor/surgeon isn't who makes this call, it's the insurance company. Don't go off of what they tell you, check with your insurance yourself. I hate to say it, but never just blindly follow what any doctor tells you, if you are able to check and confirm, do so. Be that with another doctor, with your insurance company, etc. I've seen so many instances where a doctor will tell someone something that's wrong, because the doctor knows his/her specialty and that's pretty much it... Call your insurance and ask them what their requirements are and if there are any situations where those requirements are waived or adjusted. -
2 weeks post-op LBL, BL, Arms

Milk of Magnesia isn't going to help gas though, you'll want Beano, GasX or some other gas specific, Milk of Magnesia is a laxative, so it's going to help with constipation, it also acts as an antacid. But not as a gas reducer.

Guess how much my surgeon's office wanted to charge my insurance?
Matt Z replied to kordie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to the ER for chest pain one night a ways back, was there for 7-8 hours. I saw the doctor once, for less than 5 mins, the rest of the time I saw only nurses. The doctor has the balls to charge me somewhere in the order of 1000 an hour. I fought the hell out of it, and won, and the whole team was actually scamming insurance and they were all put under review. There were 20 beds, and this doc was charging each bed at the same rate. To think, 19 of those folks didn't fight their costs and paid these ass-hats what had to have been hundreds of thousands of dollars, for no actual work. Always get the full itemized list, always review it and always contest anything that looks off. -
Seems folks that are close, tend to go more with the fear of the change rather than seeing the benefits. It sucks, but more than likely they are not supportive out of fear for your safety and as odd as it seems, your health.
