Confessional - Lets post our cheats/confessions/etc so others can see that we are all human
Matt Z replied to Matt Z's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@BurBur that's *EXACTLY* the point of this whole thread. People are so worried about what might happen if they cheat on their diets/plans/nutritional limitations. I wanted a place to showcase our trespasses and their outcomes. Most everyone here is aware that a small piece of this or some of that isn't bad overall (it is still a "cheat" however), but there are so many people that believe it'll be the end of the world. Normal is a sociological construct. Our new "normal" is our new diets and their restrictions. I view occasional cheats as "ok", as it allows us to venture outside of our new normal for a moment, it's when those cheats become habits that we've entered into that potential downward spiral. Overall, I just want folks to know that, cheats happen, sometimes it results in nothing bad, and sometimes it results in some uncomfortable moments, but overall, it's not going to totally destroy everything like some believe it will. -
Educate me about BMR post-op
Matt Z replied to kordie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes you need to consider your BMR. Now, you don't need to consume your BMR total, the idea with the BMR is to stay *UNDER* it. Something to note, BMR drops as we age and as we get thinner. Not knowing your age, based on your height and current weight a BMR of around 1700 would mean you were 53ish. https://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bmr So, if you are eating under your BMR, then you really don't have anything to worry about. Once you get down towards your goal weight, your BMR will have dropped and it should be more attainable to reach a maintenance intake at that point. Things usually do balance out eventually. -
How often do you weigh yourself?
Matt Z replied to AEdoesRnY's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL that makes WAY more sense! I did never understand why men's and women's clothing was sized differently. -

I'm the same way, wake, coffee, bathroom, stretches and naked weigh in. My scale tracks body fat as well. -

I'm so confused, size 24 jeans are "itty bitty"? Looking at your photo, I don't see how you could be anything over a size 6... let alone larger than a 24!!! -
Do yourself a favor and wait for your doctor to clear you for heavy lifting. Your external incisions might appear healed, but everything else under the subcutaneous layers, might not be. Take things easy until your doc gives you the thumbs up. I was cleared to start trying things at 6 weeks, I wasn't anywhere ready for anything heavy until almost 3 months out. I tried to push too fast, too soon and almost ended up popping the muscles at the main incision point.

I took 2 months off for my surgery. I couldn't imagine going back to work, even part time that close to surgery. I get tired if I forget to eat something. And working before you can get even close to your water goal is just asking for issues in my opinion. This weekend I slacked hard on the water intake and almost ended up going to the hospital. I thought I was hungry, yeah, turned out I was dehydrated. Don't stress about the speed, or any stalls. They will happen and could happen very often. As long as you are meeting your protein and water intake goals, and aren't going over your daily calorie limit... you'll be fine! Check my post "Time Changes Everything", I've got a great photo covering 8 years, 2 different weight loss surgeries. The image is pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

Slow loss, but inches dropping at least!
Matt Z replied to FLREDHEADMOM's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is exactly why I keep saying that tracking body fat is just as important as monitoring you weight. You can actually "gain weight" but lose body fat. Esp if you working out. I've had it happen a few times, scale says the same total weight or a slight gain... but my body fat % drops. It's called "Weight Loss Surgery" but it really should be called "Fat Loss Surgery" because that's the ONLY part of our body we really are trying to reduce! -
Congrats and good luck!

No matter what you do, try to make sure you weigh in the same exact way each time. Same time of day, same amount of clothing (or none) same routine before hand etc etc etc. I weigh in daily. I wouldn't advise it. I think weekly would be a decent number to shoot for. I say I don't advise a daily weigh in, because, well, it gets maddening. I do it to keep a trend. My scale tracks body fat % as well, so I use my daily weigh ins as a method to ensure I'm tracking the trend of my weight and body fat losses. It's also easy for me to keep it in my daily wake up routine to ensure the best possible consistency. I get up, get a cup of coffee, drink a bunch of water, veg out on the throne for a while, then I do some stretching and I check my weight. Pretty much the same exact time every morning (the weekends are my only variations to this). It's frustrating and maddening because, you see every increase and stall. Having the body fat % as well helps, because there are plenty of times when I stall out or gain and my body fat drops.

UPDATE YOUR STATS; it makes it easier for others to answer your questions
Matt Z replied to Born in Missouri's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
On the app yes (might just be the IOS app though, because even though @AshAsh1 has shown me screenshots, I cannot see any like / reaction information on the Android version of the app), on the website, no. -

That's entirely possible, just wish someone would speak up from the site... I can't fathom having a forum specifically for asking for site help and then not having someone from the site bother to even take the time to acknowledge the post. -
Skyrim Icelandic Provisions
Matt Z replied to elmatador's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And agreed, 11g of Sugar is a bit high considering it's added sugar and not natural sugars (they add cane sugar, it's not just from the fruits) The plain has 5g but it's not added, so that would be ok for most folks. But lots of us are on the 5/5 restriction (or something like it) where if there are added sugars, we are not supposed to consume more than 5g per serving. The other 5 is for fat per serving. -

Skyrim eh? LOL that's a funny autocorrect. -
So... any one from the site is going to chime in on this request? Seems like a pretty reasonable request to expect the App and Site to provide a similar user experience.

I've asked a few times and I have a post in the suggestions forum for this very reason. None of the site staff have bothered to chime in though. Guess it's not a priority for them to have the site and app provide the same user experience. -
Here we go .. goodbye band hello rny
Matt Z replied to sld21's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Complications is a factor with approvals, if an insurance company denied a procedure to correct a problem and that problem got worse, the insurance company would be in some serious trouble and potentially under threat of a lawsuit. They will more than likely make you jump through some hoops, monitored diet and exercise, follow ups with a nutritionist, etc... but denying because the band is problematic... I don't see that happening anytime soon. -
My buddy and I went to see Zombie and Korn a few years ago, and while I was sitting there, I realized that, it was 20 years ago that I saw Korn for the first time... was one of those... "well damn" moments.
-
My very first, on my own concert was a doozy. A local band named Shed opened up for what's now one of my favorite groups Monster Magnet who opened up for... Korn. This was 94/95, I believe before Korn's album was actually released, tickets were $10 LOL

Anyone not just stalled, but gained, weight Post-op week 2-3?
Matt Z replied to GB2018's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
water retention, muscle growth if you are working out, and your body trying to take a pause to adjust itself... all things that cause stalls or slight regains while are you staying on track with your water/protein/intake... really only time to worry too much about a stall or slight regain is if you know you are not following your diet/instructions. Something else to be aware of, you can lose body fat and gain "weight" as odd as that sounds. It happens to me very often, ESP on the weeks when I'm hitting the gym hard and working on muscle growth. When I do a cardio only week or like now, taking time off due to some back issues (arthritis, yay) the weight starts dropping again. Just work to focus on getting that water intake up, since our bodies use water to process fat, if we aren't getting enough to cover the daily requirements, plus the added fat reduction, things tend to bog down because our bodies have to prioritize the water usage and fat reduction tends to be less efficient with low water intake. By all means don't worry about it if you are having a hard time, just as long as you are continually trying to increase your water intake. Good luck! -
Awesome! Taking my wife to go see Blues Traveler in Oct. Not as epic as a flashy 80's band, but, iconic none-the-less. Have fun!

I have a bit of an annoying NSV. I keep getting my kids clothes mixed in with mine because now my oldest and I are wearing the same sized shirts and work out shorts and stuff...

Anyone not just stalled, but gained, weight Post-op week 2-3?
Matt Z replied to GB2018's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good call on this one, @GB73018 us revisions tend to lose slower overall, just something else to watch out for and be ready for mentally. Even being aware of it, like I was, didn't prepare me for the frustration of watching others drop weight hand over fist while I just keep slowly losing. But rest assured, if you keep yourself on track, you'll lose the weight just fine, it just might not seem as drastic as those that didn't have a WLS already. -

Yes. Happens often. Don't worry about ANY stall if you are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing. Your body takes time to adjust and likes to fight changes... you'll be fine.
