Just looking for any ideas to when I’ll have an appetite
Matt Z replied to Mrs Davis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok so to answer this topics actual topic, When will you have an appetite again, this is pretty much per user. Some folks never get hungry again, some never lose the hunger, and those that did lose it, most gain it back again by the time they hit the 1 year mark. For the shake, it could depend on what brand. If it's a protein concentrate, those typically have high levels of lactose due to being just concentrated milk proteins, nothing gets removed. Protein isolate contains zero to almost zero lactose. Lots of people become intolerant to lactose after WLS. Try a different brand. Or look for some of the Protein water versions of "shakes". Isopure RTD are really good, clear, protein sources, as well as Protein2O. -
The first 6 months are the big change... once you are fully healed and cleared for all foods, then you get to experiment and find out what works, what doesn't and what causes issues. I'm pretty much able to tolerate anything at this point. Beer included. I avoid shots because of how quickly they hit my system with the bypass. But I still enjoy beer, I just have to take my time. You just really want to focus on what you need to be doing now to lose weight and heal before you start worrying about all the things you may or may not be able to do down the road, odds are, what you think you can and can't do... won't be what actually happens. I expected dumping with lots of foods, yet, that's not quite the case now that I'm healed up. I actually wish I had more dumping so I would be less tempted to eat the foods / items (candy) that I can, but really shouldn't be eating. Don't worry about the future, focus on the now. The future will be here soon enough.

Check the search, there are many many many posts about what to and not to bring. Most people over pack. I can't stress enough having dry mouth spray and lip balm with you, makes the hours after surgery when you can't drink anything that much easier. Nerves are normal.

Marijuana Use Post-Op
Matt Z replied to skinnymeeeeeee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on Dronabinal / marinol for sleep issues, I was taking it the day I got home from surgery. SWIM was smoking within a week or so of surgery, it was reported that pain and swelling was reduced and healing times seemed to be increased. It was noted that pain from coughing was controlled with pressing into the main incision line, either with the palm of the hand or a pillow. No negative side effects were noted, "munchies" were not an issue as per the user. -
Is it supposed to be like this?
Matt Z replied to B Garcia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Clearly talk to your doctor... but *Everyone* gets stitches in their abdominal wall, they have to stitch closed all the holes they put in you... as far as getting up, check into using the "log roll" method of getting out of bed, it'll help out greatly. Sadly pain is subjective and pain tolerance is unique to each person, so no one really has the same level of pain or discomfort as someone else. Don't regret anything right now, you are still healing, you just had a major surgery, had 90% of your stomach removed, you've got stitches and titanium staples in there now, it's going to take time for your body to recover and heal. Did they give you pain meds? -

Day 1 post Op Band to Bypass
Matt Z replied to Mizzhappygolucky's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congrats and welcome to the Revision club! Did they warn you that your weight loss might be slower than "typical" with the revision? If not, be aware, but don't let it get you down, I'm done 100 lbs since my pre-revision check in, so, we can do it just as well as first timers! -
I need HELP!!! Will my lapband work again???
Matt Z replied to IvyMay's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Statistically the band fails more often than not. If it didn't then major manufacturers wouldn't have packed up shop and stopped making parts. Surgeons all over the world wouldn't have stopped installing them. I find it funny that folks continue to push it, with all the slippage, erosions, scar tissue issues, that people swear up and down that those that failed... failed and it wasn't the bands fault. For me, The band did not perform the way it needed to. The healthy foods I should have had no issues with, were nothing but problems. And whereas I didn't have any erosion or slippage, my band was 100% encapsulated in scar tissue and was a problem that required removal. No one is going to tell me that I failed the band. The band failed me. This is pretty clear with my continued weight loss with the revision to bypass, if it was I that failed the band... then the bypass would not be working as effectively as it currently is, now, I'm able to eat those healthy foods that the band prevented me from eating. But still, the majority of failures are not the fault of the user. Some, sure, but majority... no. -
There is nothing stopping you from starting over. Do a "pre-op" prep diet, then fast for a day or 2 pretending you just had surgery, then start your recovery post-op diet from scratch. It's hard, but it's totally doable, seriously NOTHING is stopping you from starting over. Also check into Intermittent Fasting (IF), the science is sound and, it's free. There are a few of us on here doing it and I can say with 100% certainty that it has helped me out drastically. I was getting stalled hard around 230-235. I picked up IF and I'm down to 210 now... it's gotten a bit harder overall, but, 20-25 lbs of extra weight loss I can attribute to IF.

Everyone in my immediate family has benefited from my surgery, my boys are doing great and are at healthy weights, my wife has lost a few of the extra lbs she wanted to, we are all doing more and eating better. And I know that I won't end up dying younger than I should because of the weight or a weight related issue. Now it's back up to good old fate.

Getting the surgery, and following all the proper rules surrounding it, will be the best thing you can do for your kids. Hands down.

If it sounds pretentious, you are reading too much into it. I don't generally type with any inflection or emotion, just facts as they are. No need to go looking for something to be offended by here. Just the text on the screen and that's it. I'm on the spectrum, so, anything you are reading into my words are not my intention or purpose. I don't typically type with hidden meaning.

128 oz is 1 gallon of water. Very un-random LOL.

All the above, it's to allow for healing. It sucks, but it's worth it in the long run, you REALLY don't want to push things too fast and end up with a problem that'll need more surgery to correct.

Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
Matt Z replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Stressed and frustrated. Hoping that 210-215 isn't my lower limit... now to try to double down and get back on tract... 22 days until my "deadline"... lots of stress in my life right now too that I'm sure isn't helping matters .at.all. sigh. -

Fits the thread LOL -
It's actually from "more current" research based on required amounts of water that the body actually needs. Even the older "3 liters of water" requirement is 101.442 oz of water a day. It seems like a lot, until you reach it.. then it's not really that much. "The report did not specify exact requirements for water, but set general recommendations for women at approximately 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of total water -- from all beverages and foods -- each day, and men an average of approximately 3.7 liters (125 ounces daily) of total water." http://www.nationalacademies.org/hmd/Reports/2004/Dietary-Reference-Intakes-Water-Potassium-Sodium-Chloride-and-Sulfate.aspx These totals are for healthy, non-WLS patient, humans. I stress trying to hit 128 oz because of the added water requirements WLS patients need in order to properly process fat. There is such thing as "too much" water, however, 128 oz is quite far from that "too much" level. "Prolonged physical activity and heat exposure will increase water losses and therefore may raise daily fluid needs, although it is important to note that excessive amounts can be life-threatening." Water intoxication (hypronatremia) occurs when one consumes more than 27-33 oz in 1 hour, this is due to the kidneys max elimination rate. The kidneys can eliminate about 5-7 gallons of water a day (20-28 liters). So as you can see, 128 oz is very far from too much water. The science supports 128 oz a day as a smart goal for proper hydration AND fat loss. WLS patients need more water to support fat loss, if you aren't meeting your bodies daily minimum to meet hydration levels, fat loss will not occur or will suffer greatly. There is evidence that simply consuming 1 gallon of water a day, without making any other changes to exercise, diet, or any other habits (in an intact human *aka non-WLS) for 30 days will results in weight loss due to increased hydration and fat processing. https://www.mydomaine.com/drinking-a-gallon-of-water-a-day https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/voices/i-drank-a-gallon-of-water-every-day-for-a-month-and-this-is-what-happened/ar-BBLp5ZO https://www.ksl.com/?sid=39748294 My data and advice typically always comes from factual, scientific evidence, research or confirmed sources. I'm not typically in the habit of providing information based on hearsay, rumor or things that have been made up with no basis in fact or with no scientific evidence to support them. My advice to try to hit 128+ oz a day, is factually sound based on current scientific research and evidence. I must point out that I'm not saying you *HAVE* to meet that daily, only that you should be trying to meet that daily. it really does help, not only to keep hunger in check, but to ensure proper toxin flushing, which WLS patients really need with all the fat loss as well, AND it ensures that your body has the best environment for fat removal, processing and elimination.
