6 days post op . I need help!
Matt Z replied to Bypass Lady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll be fine. This is all normal. Yes, surgery is going to hurt for a while. At 6 days, I wouldn't be worried about any mild discomfort, it's the really painful things you need to watch for. If they gave you an incentive spirometer, *use it* every hour... It helps more than you would imagine. Walk walk walk walk walk walk walk. Every hour you should be doing some walking. Sip sip sip sip sip... you should be sipping water pretty much non-stop (except for before/after your meals). Keep all the reasons you wanted the surgery in your mind. This is temporary. -
Sounds like a DS with pouch vs sleeve. Doesn't seem too out of the norm really, with your height/weight, the extra support from the DS should make a really decent impact. I have reservations about your goal weight however. I don't see a Bypass DS hybrid is going to get you to lose 242 lbs, I'd be afraid that you'll get frustrated with such an ambitious goal weight. WLS has around a 60-65% excess body weight loss success. Meaning whatever your "Ideal" weight is, subtracted from your current total, then taking only 60-65% of that. So, for a Female standing 5 foot 3, "Ideal" weight is 104-127. Your call out states you current weigh 407. So assuming the high end of "Ideal" your excess weight is 280. 65% of 280 is 182. You should expect to reach 225 as your 65% of your excess body weight goal. Anything beyond that is great, but don't set your sights on a weight that's really not feasible without plastic surgery. By all means strive for the best possible outcome, just keep in mind a more realistic goal, because when you can't reach a goal, frustration and depression can set in and sabotage your process. Speaking from personal experience, I originally had 200 as my dream goal, knowing I'd have a hard time hitting it. I've gotten close, within 7 lbs of that goal, but it's just not happening, excess skin adds to total weight, and you can't eat or exercise extra skin away.

Yup, and they can be quite powerful. Just keep yourself focused on all the reasons why you wanted the surgery. You will more than likely have a few more instances pre-op... and then post-op. It's really just the stress of the whole ordeal taking it's toll. Sounds like you've got a good grasp on reality vs emotional distraction. Congrats and Good Luck!

There are a number of ready made microwavable lunch options that fit a post-WLS diet, just need to check out the nutritional panel to be sure it fits your restrictions. I've found a most Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers that fit into my daily requirements/limitations for example.

Lost too much weight

What did your surgeon, surgical team and nutritionist have to say? -
I'm going to agree with this, sure, *some* of it is added confidence. But, I've worked with people before surgery that didn't remember me afterwards and they treated me TOTALLY differently. Even people in passing, we have a lot of nurses, residents and students, and the "in passing" hallway interactions are 100% different. Female nurses/residents that would "1000 yard stare" when I walked past, now engage and say hi, same folks, different me, no time for confidence as it's just a hallway "hi" / "good day" etc. Yet, the feedback from them has changed greatly.

Congrats! That's great!

35 oz of water isn't near enough, not even for a typical human. Current studies are showing that the minimum for a typical human is between 90 and 100+ oz of water a day total (from both food and water sources) Studies are showing that simply consuming 128 oz of water a day, and not changing your diet or exercise will result in weight loss. If your burn per day is higher than your intake, and you are not losing weight... it could be that you aren't losing fat due to the lack of water intake. The human body processes fat, with water. If you don't give your body enough water to meet the daily minimums, fat loss *WILL SUFFER*! Also, it's called Weight Loss Surgery, but, we aren't looking for just any random loss to make the "weight" number drop... we want to remove fat. If you are not tracking your body fat %'s, then you are missing out on a pretty critical bit of information. I have stalled or even gained a bit and still had my body fat % drop. Just something to think about. It's frustrating, of that I fully understand. But there are ways to break the stall. Intermittent fasting is something that's really helped me drop 20+ lbs when I was really stalled out around 230 ish. Push that water... it's important!

Concentration difficulties?
Matt Z replied to Rick.Mc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get in touch with your Nutritionist and let them know about your continued fog, they can and typically will adjust diets as needed, what you are given is a general guideline, since everyone is different, those guidelines typically get adjusted and fine tuned to meet your specific requirements. Good luck! -
Meeting Protein Goals Immediately After Surgery
Matt Z replied to FluffyChix's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Don't forget Isopure Zero Carb RTD, clear proteins, super easy to drink, thin and fruity. And Protein2o, another clear protein that's super easy to get down as it's as thin as water and comes in fruity flavors. -
Switching from surgeon to family doc?
Matt Z replied to AshMarie794's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well, you have to start somewhere right? Your current surgeon was once someone that you didn't know, and that had no idea what you were dealing with, I'd assume your current surgeon would provide you with someone they felt could continue your support. You could see if they could recommend someone closer. But even still, it's going to be best to have someone who's well versed in Bariatric surgery. I wouldn't suggest leaning on a PCP for all specialty needs, be that Bariatric, Dermatology, Orthopedics etc. I love my PCP. And I go to her for pretty much everything, except my ongoing bariatric support, that support goes to those that have the specific skills for those issues. Clearly my opinion, you do what you wish/what you feel comfortable with, I just don't feel comfortable telling someone to stop seeing to someone that works on those specific issues for someone that only does the generalized stuff. -
Concentration difficulties?
Matt Z replied to Rick.Mc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why can't you eat fats? There are so many healthy fats that you could/should be eating... 72 is decent, but current medical research is showing that non-wls humans require 90-100+ oz of water a day just to meet the bodies minimum requirements. For WLS, since we need more water to process fat removal, we need to be consuming more than the minimum requirements. See if you can increase your water intake and if that helps out. I'd also suggest getting some fats, either from fish, fish oils, supplements specific for mental support, nuts, etc. -
How much water are you drinking? Are you drinking while you eat are are you waiting the 30 mins after eating before you start to drink again?

My opinion on it, I wouldn't switch to *JUST* the PCP. PCPs are great and all, but can miss things that a Bariatric Surgeon might not. I still go and see my PCP *AND* check in with my surgeon / surgical team. No reason you can't have both, In my opinion, it's still best to follow up with a Bariatric surgeon. -

Your brain needs fat, and water. How is your water intake? Anywhere near 128 oz a day? -
Veterans - Revision to Bypass Results
Matt Z replied to shoregirl75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, yes, *typically* revisions lose less quickly than first timers. But that doesn't mean that's what it'll be like for you, just something you have to be aware of *if* it happens. I'm down over 100 lbs since March. Not sure if that's typical or more... I'm at the point now where my weight loss as slowed down greatly, I could easily move to maintenance if I wished to stay at this weight, but I want to go a bit lower so I'm still working on it, but it sure has gotten much harder to do. Check out my post It was 20 lbs or so ago now, but it still holds true -
4 week post-op weight loss meltdown
Matt Z replied to KT1981's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm going to have to swing back to this, but for now, use the search and look up "Stalls", they are normal and common and frustrating. But they don't last. Also, you might need to actually start increasing your caloric intake, but I'm confused how you are getting 60g of protein and with less than 400 calories. Protein is approx 4 calories per gram, so 60 calories would be 240 in itself. Working out will cause fluid retention and a stall. I'll come back to this when I can, but relax, nothing is wrong, you seem to be doing what you need to be and you are following your doctors instructions which is great. You didn't mention your water intake, your body needs water to remove fat, current medical research is showing that non-WLS humans need between 90-110 oz of water a day, I shoot for 128 oz a day myself. Increased water intake does make a major difference! -
The Importance of viewing the "Whole Picture"
Matt Z posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
We all have or will get frustrated with our weight loss. We all have or will question if we are doing things the right way. I'm not different. I wanted to showcase why focusing on the short term isn't the best thing to do. Here we have my 1 week weigh ins. I'm so super frustrated with this. I've got this goal I want to meet and it's getting tougher and tougher. 2.7 lbs is still a respectable drop. But, I see this line and it makes me sad. Here is my month. 7.4 lbs. This isn't great at all. The downward trend is good, but the rate, really gets me frustrated. Here is where things start looking much MUCH better. Here is my year in review. 85.2 lbs total. Here is where we can start seeing why it's so important to look at the whole journey and not just the small daily/weekly or even monthly numbers. I am proud and pleased when I see this chart. And here is my full weight loss weigh in history. Here is where you can clearly see the struggles. You can see where I got the Lap-Band and started this whole process. You can see where the Band and I stopped working well together. You can see the gains and losses, all the super frustrating stalls. But what I really want people to take away from this is, the whole picture shows the real story. When we focus too much on the small things, we lose focus. When we don't take the whole journey into account, both past and future... we lose sight of our own successes. I hope this helps someone to get through a stall or to realize that, it's never too late to start over. Just keep moving forward and try your best not to worry about the small little blips when the whole history will show something much different. Stay Strong.- 15 replies

Congrats! I'm also pleased I had mine removed. I was revised to the bypass and I honestly could not be happier with my decision!

So far the only necroposting I've seen is from members that have been here for a while. Not to say I haven't missed newbies doing so... but *typically* newbies just post first, then search later. @FluffyChix is just being silly with her comment. -
