I had my surgery on 1/19/12 and I started drinking about 3 weeks after. I was worried at first because everyone says you get drunk so much faster but that was not the case for me. I actually was wondering if I would ever be able to get drunk and crazy again. I started drinking captain and water with a splash of Diet Coke and that worked well. In most bars the soda is pretty flat either way but adding the water cut on the sweetness. I have continued drinking since then and thankfully have been able to get drunk and cut loose. I have noticed now I sober up a lot faster. Also I have not noticed any negative effects with my wieghtloss. A lot of people mentioned soda, I have no problems drinking soda or carbonated beverages. Hope this helped answer some questions.

How Long Were You Off Work?
CDox53207 replied to Debvzw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, I had surgery on 1/19, I went back to work full time a little over 2 weeks. The first day back at work was the longest day of my life! I was so tired by the end of the day. I would say to take a solid 3 weeks off work. It also depends on what kind of work you do. I am an administrative assistant in an out patient rehab and I do a lot of side down/stand up work. I practically get a work out in just by how often I go from sitting to standing. So my reccomendation would by for sure 3 weeks. Dont push yourself to hard to soon, I did with working out and tore my stomache muscle, its not worth it! Good luck to you with your surgery! -
Hey, I was sleeved on the 19th and have had some of the same issues. I found that I was able to sleep in bed if I had a pillow against my stomache. Its like the pressure from leaning against the pillow relieved so much pain. I know what you are talking about with needing to get out of the house, I ended up pushing it to far and tore an area of my stomache muscle and was home bound for 4 solid days. By the time I left the house it didnt matter where we went or what we did it just felt normal being out. I actually commented to my mom when we were walking around target that it felt nice to be "normal" again. lol. Isnt it strange how each doctor has people on different diets. When I left the hospital I started a pureed diet, by the way that was the longest two weeks of my life. But my doctor does not allow me to use any protein powder or shakes. It is strictly protein from foods. I guess I cannot complain because to date I've lost 24 lbs, 30 if I include the per surgery loss. I am interested in following your journey. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow.

Thanks Y'all. I guess from what everyone is saying it seems that I am just jumping the gun right away. Moving faster then I am allowed. Hopefully this pain will subdue soon so I can go along with my new life. Thank you guys for helping me. I was in a sad spot and didnt know where else to turn for help. Thanks bunches!!!

Thanks for commenting. The part that is worring me about the sharp pain is that it is not by an incision site. Its like in the middle of two and then about an inch above everything. I guess I will just have to see what the doctor says. Maybe I did tear part of my stomache muscle while working out. I just feel like I should be working out and stuff since I was feeling 100%. I didnt think that just because I was feeling good that other things still needed time to heal. I guess right now I am just second guessing all my decisions that I have been making. Like I requested off work for three weeks to heal up and since I was feeling a lot better I told my work I could come back early... Tuesday... But now I dont know if that was the best decision for me. I dont know, and I think that is what is worrying me because I feel like with this surgery I should know what to do next and now I have no clue. Trying to take it one day at a time...

I was sleeved on 1/19 and have been concerned that I have been over doing it. When I got home on 1/21 everything was fine, there was no pain, I (thought) I was getting in all my water and doing everything on my own. Its like everything seemed to take a turn for the worse. On Tuesday I started feeling severely dehydrated(my anxiety probably amped it up more) so I went to the ER to get fluid. I left there feeling back to normal. The next day I walked a mile and worked out for like 45 mins. I made a huge mistake in thinking since I could handle more water without any problems that it meant I could move to stage 2 of the diet, which is small cottage cheese size consistancy. It wasnt until Thursday when I woke up and had SEVERE sharp stabbing abdomanal pain which would only get better if I applied tons of pressure. At first I blew it off thinking it was just a little pain from working out so hard yesterday and that I should not worry. I proceeded going about my day as normal and then pain increased drastically. I decided at that point to call the doctor and he reccomended going into the ER to get checked out. When I got to the ER they did blood work and found my pancreas was inflamed but that was from surgery and not from an underlying issue. They were unable to pin point the problem of my pain because it didnt hurt at all unless I was using my stomache muscles (sitting, standing, walking...) So I was released with the orders to follow up with my MD on Monday. But that does not make any sence to me. They ruled out an abdom hernea, with the possiblity it could be a muscle tear. I dont get why I would have new pain a week post op. Now I am at home unable to do the basic stuff due to the excrucating pain. I dont know what to do anymore. I contacted my doctors office and they stated the pain could be caused for eating the wrong consistancy (which I have since went back to the pureed diet). Has anyone experienced this before or is anyone going through this?? I am so frusterated because I cannot do anything. I am stuck in my house and cant even load the dishwasher or go for walks or anything. And to top everything off I weighed myself when I went to the hospital on Tuesday and thought I was doing AMAZING on my weight loss because I was down 18lbs since my surgery date and like amped myself up and all. Only to realize a few days later that it was wrong because I was so incredibly dehydrated which would make me weigh so much less. So now I am trying to reitterate to myself that I didnt gain weight but that it was an inacurate weigh-in... I am just going through a tough time right now... What the hell! its only been ONE WEEK!!!

Ela2012, What kind of work do you do? I requested off for 3 weeks but I really dont think that i will need that long. I work as an administrative assistant and there is no heavy lifting or anything like that involved. I hope that we have compareable jobs so I can return to work faster. How long is everyone else taking off work for surgery?

Hey y'all, I am wondering how long did you take off work post VSG? I work as an Admin Asst and I dont any physical work. My doctor recommends taking 3 weeks off work, but that seems like a lot of time. When did you feel comfortable going back to work full-time or did you ease into working??? Help, I have to request off work soon. Thanks.

Today I recieved the phone call!!! I am scheduled to be sleeved on 1/19/11 by Dr. Wallace in MKE! I am so excited to finally have a scheduled date. I cant believe its right around the corner. For like my whole life I have been dealing with being over weight and now its time for the confident, outgoing person that I am on the inside to match the person on the outside!!! I am kind of bummed tho, I really had my hopes to have this done prior to the new year. I am trying to be positive, I know I floated right through the appointments and with insurance, but man I really had my hopes on this year. But, I think having the surgery in 2012 will be better for me in the long run. I feel like it is the fresh start to the whole "NEW CHELSEA TRAIN" as I like to call it. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I could just scream I am so excited!!!!!!!! Good Luck Y'all!!!

Hello, My name is Chelsea and I am new to this website. I have been interested in WLS for awhile now and have finally gotten the guts to look into it. Come to find out that my insurance company covers this procedure 100%, So therefore i figured why not do it. I have attended the orientation, met with the doctor (who has also approved me getting the VSG), completed the upper GI xray (that stuff was NASTY), just completed the abdominal ultrasound and now later today I am meeting with the CD. I feel I have everything in order but the one thing that worries me is the blood test to asure I quit smoking. I dont smoke a lot, maybe 4 or 5 cigs/wk (only smoke when I drink) and I have not smoked since Saturday 10/22, I dont have to go in for the blood test until 11/10. Do you think that I will have problems passing the blood test if I stopped smoking on the 22nd? I really dont want my surgry to be postponed because of cigs. Can someone let me know what their experience was? Also I have not met with the psychologist yet, does anyone know what they ask or give me heads up on what they will ask and so forth.
