Help me understand
Butterthebean replied to NewAshes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your skin doesn't care if you lose the weight with surgery or without. There will be no more extra skin either way. If you lose 150 pounds you will likely have some loose skin. I understand wanting to feel good about your body but having loose skin is way better than having 150 pounds of extra fat....IMO. The reason you hear more about people having WLS and loose skin is people who do not have WLS generally do not lose that kind of weight. It's so rare that when someone does it they are usually on a talk show somewhere. But WLS patients who have lost that much weight....there are many. The odds of someone losing that kind of weight without surgery are very slim. Keeping it off is even slimmer...less than 5%. Nobody wants extra skin but I can tell you from experience it's not as bad as it seems like it's going to be....compared to the alternative. -

Because you all inspire me so much I had some shirts made so none of you would feel bad about not being a fast runner. Next time you think everyone else is faster than you....remember this. I wear them proudly. -

All great points. I have a link in my sig about stalls that pretty much says the same thing you did. And yes, resistance training is hugely beneficial...especially to people on massively restricted diets. It is very easy to go into a catabolic state on a calorie restricted diet....eating protein and doing resistance training will help prevent that. -
Great article. I think the question of carbs has to include some discussion of starches. I know I'm the starch police, but there is a huge difference between eating 25 carbs of veggies and a donut with 25 carbs. I honestly think there should be an additional macro nutrient group to separate the 2 because they do not act the same in your body once swallowed. Frankly with the sleeve, it's hard to eat too many healthy carbs, they are usually so low calorie and bulky and we just don't have the room. But it's easy to eat too many jelly beans.

Silly question really

Before surgery I as an original sweat hog. Now I'm freezing all the time. It gets old but it's better than always sweating. This has been the coldest winter of my life. I can't wait for summer. I'm hoping all the shivering I've been doing is going to translate into not sweating like a pig. -
Hey man glad to see you back. I remember you telling me about how you started running and that helped inspire me to start running as well. You look terrific. Keep up the great work. I'm with you in the excess skin. I've got some, you can't lose 200 lbs and not have some....but it beats having the 200lbs of fat any day of the week.

Calling all slowish losers--please post your losses so far!
Butterthebean replied to TES's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really don't have any stats to add because I don't think I was a slow loser, but you touched on something....most people here do think they are a slow loser, and half of them are wrong. I don't think the fast losers are more vocal necessarily....look at all the "why am I a slow loser" threads. It's just that it only takes 1 thread about someone losing 100 pounds in 3 months to wipe out 50 threads about losing 2 pounds a week. It's just like people's opinions about why we really don't need WLS in the first place. They heard on the news about 1 guy who lost 200 lbs through diet and exercise and they think we all can do it. They don't realize or acknowledge that 1 guy was 1 in 10,000. It's the same here with the fast weight loss threads. 99% of the time the really fast weight loss people were like me...VERY obese so we had more to lose. The more you have the faster it's going to come off. My long winded point is 90% of the people on this site are losing at a healthy sustainable pace and should be happy with that, not feel like they are failing because the pace is slower than someone else. -

Too many calories?
Butterthebean replied to SuzanneRoupas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're losing 5 pounds a week. That's not slow. Your calories are fine. Reducing it to 600 will create an additional 300 calorie deficit which if my math is right will allow you to lose 1 extra pound every 12 days. I don't think that will make much difference in your life. -

You just touched on what I sorta hinted about in your other post. If I'm totally honest with myself, I haven't tried crossfit yet because I'm afraid I'll suck at it. I really need to get over that. -

Dizzy from standing up is likely related to much lower sodium intake, typical during the preop diet....otherwise known as hell week. You will feel much better after being sleeved. For me it was the 3rd week post op, I started feeling like Superman and have felt great every since. -

Sorry to hear that. I wish I could offer some help based on real experience but I cannot. I will say that I believe if you think about it you will realize that the weight gain is A) temporary and related to the medication, not over eating. Therefore you should not kick yourself about it. This weight gain will certainly not undo all your hard work thus far. I bet that no one, even you, would have any idea that 7 pounds is there without an evil scale. So don't let that 7 pounds make your situation worse. Once you find the proper medication that's right for you, then you can deal with those 7 pounds. Btw....when I started adding propel to my Water to increase sodium I gained 6 pounds almost over night. Cut back on the propel and those 6 pounds went away.
