Biking feels harder but burns less calories then elliptical?
Butterthebean replied to mikeross's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I wouldn't trust those calorie counters...I'd trust a heart rate monitor more. But it does make some sense. Sounds like you were on a recumbent stationary bike. Is that correct? You're not supporting your weight like you do on an elliptical so that right there is going to decrease the calorie burn. But either way, it does your body good to change things up. Doing the same machine all the time will allow your body a chance to get really efficient at it (which means you'll burn less calories) and also increases your opportunity for a repetitive use injury. Cross training will actuate different muscles making your more well rounded. -
WTG Fiddleman. Happy 37th. It's a great feeling getting better as we get older. Keep it up. Imagine where you could be a year from now. There are no limits for you my friend.

Forgetting for the moment pounds lost, lets talk about what changes our shape the most
Butterthebean replied to Globetrotter's topic in Fitness & Exercise
No powder for me...I make my own. At first my wife turned up her nose at it...wouldn't even try it. Now everytime someone comes to the house she's begging me to make some veggie shake for them. But most of my friends that come to the house want me to char some steak on the grill not make 'em a veggie shake. Keeps the freeloaders away though. -
That's true you do...I've never once seen you give anyone any advice that they ought to be getting from their medical professionals.

You may have lost some muscle, but even if you didn't you'd feel weaker by losing all the weight...it's simple physics. You can't use your weight to throw other weight around anymore. You can't "put your weight behind it" like you once could. And the padding....heck yeah. Who knew toilet seats were so friggin firm? I can't even enjoy a good magazine anymore. And let's not even talk about how cold I've been all winter. It's getting ridiculous. It's May and I'm still wanting to light the fireplace....in Texas.

Weird cause a green salad fills me up like I just ate the whole Thanksgiving turkey. We are all different I guess.

Stomach stretching!?!?
Butterthebean replied to nikie409's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's a very common thing for the hunger to come back and the capacity to eat increase somewhere between 6 and 12 months out. That's why it's so important to develop those good habits in the first few months. Keep doing the right things. Your capacity to eat has and may continue to increase, but that doesn't mean you have to eat more. Eating dense protein and following rule number one about drinking with meals helps me the most. -
Spacedust...you aren't the first person to want to yoga but didn't know if you were ready. I'm sure any yoga instructor worth his or her salt has had students in much worse shape than you and has experience in dealing with it. Best thing to put your mind at ease or call or go there and tell them your exact worries. Let them reassure you....or let them say you won't cut it (which I doubt). Honestly, I think they'll tell you how common it is, and how they are more than happy to work with you.

Sounds eerily familiar.

Wow...congrats. That's a great time and I know you must feel very proud having accomplished such a feat. Men half your age can't do it. Happy for you.

So you ran 15 miles? Awesome! Definitely get you some kind of hydration belt before you go to Hawaii. Or just one of those handhelds like this that have a strap and a pouch for keys/money/gels.

I either put them in my protein or veggie shakes and let them gel for about 20 minutes then drink. I have also put them in SF pudding and it gives it a nice tapioca texture. For me they just absorb the taste of whatever you put them in, but they definitely change the texture. I don't like them to gel longer than 30 minutes because then the shake is too slimy.

I have a polar and I also have a Garmin which is both a HR monitor and a GPS device. Honestly, you can't go wrong with a Polar. The more features they have the more they are going to cost. If all you want is HR and calories burned, you don't need the most expensive. I personally like the simpler ones with less useless information (plus I'm a cheapskate). The biggest problem I see with people and their HR monitors is they don't know how to put on the chest strap. If your skin is dry it's not going to work properly. Once you break a sweat they work fine. They make a gel specifically for these things, you apply it to the sensors on the chest strap and that helps it pick up your heart's signal. You can also just spit on the sensors to get them wet right before you put it on. Sounds gross but the saliva will keep it wet long enough for you to start sweating. If you simply wet it with Water, it may or may not stay wet long enough...depends on how hot you get. The gel works well but it's not necessary. It's basically KY so you could use that instead I would think.

What a great article. I want to find the author and give her a hug. That was spot on. -
Hey Fiddle....I have 2 Nathan hydration belts. One holds 1 22oz bottle, the other holds 2. And if I'm going to be on a really long trail run, where there is no possibility of finding a convenience store or Water fountain, I wear my Camelbak Marathoner hydration vest. My wife hates the belts but I don't mind them at all. After a couple of runs I got so used to them I forget I have one on. Plus I can put my phone, key and any food/gels I want to carry in there. Other than that, I agree with everyone else. Early morning or late evening. I drink a 64oz bottle of water (with propel) the hour before the run to hydrate myself. I have gone as far as 10 miles on one bottle in shady areas. But in the wide open sun, I need 1 bottle for every 5-6 miles when it's over 80. Oh yeah...wear a lite, cool hat.

I'm sorry about your loss. No disrespect to him or you but I'll stop calling it a tool when everyone else around here stops using the word Nazi. I find that highly offensive but it keeps being used and the mods keep allowing it.

Dadto2....I don't know much about that run you did. But when I ran the Conoco Phillips 10K they specifically said "we don't care what your gps says, this is an official distance and it's accurate" That being said, I'm sure not all races have such exacting distances and measurements so unless they gave y'all that same speech it's likely they made some small errors marking off their 10K. A lot of it is going to depend on the experience of the volunteers who are organizing the run.

I've warmed up to them quite a bit. They are my long distance shoe now because I cannot go more than 8 miles in the Vibrams. I've had 3 runs of 9 miles or more in the Skechers recently and they really felt good.
