I Want To See Before & After Pics!
Butterthebean replied to Christina760's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Think about what you just wrote fiddle....just over 2000 calories a day, working out hard and not gaining muscle....no big surprise. Go read up on the diets of major league bodybuilders. I guarantee they are easily doubling or tripling your calorie intake. Now I'm not saying you should eat 4000-5000 calories a day...indeed we had this surgery so we couldn't do that. But to put on muscle, you need calories to do it...there's no way around it. That's why it's extremely difficult for sleevers to put on muscle past a certain point. You'd have to experiment with adding a gainer shake every day and see what happened...monitor your weight but also body fat %. Likely both will go up, you just have to decide if the muscle gained is worth it. Pro bodybuilders go through bulking and cutting phases. They bulk up with lots of calories, then diet and shave the fat...leaving as much muscle as possible. They figured out long ago that trying to pack on the muscle without also adding some fat is next to impossible. But you could try to do a bulk phase followed by a cut and see where that left you. You might be able to preserve a few pounds of muscle with each phase. Put enough of them together and poof....you're a bodybuilder....that's how they do it. Edit...jeez...I didn't mean for this to sound so uppity Fiddle. I was typing this while listening to someone else b***h at me about work related stuff and it filtered over....sorry. -
Richard, you're close enough to goal I'd think you'd have no problem taking some casein. The whey is recommended for fresh post ops because of its fast absorption and the extreme reduced calorie intake. If you're having no problems getting in ample Protein, the some casein will do your body good, especially before bedtime.

Breaking the stall
Butterthebean replied to Tink22-sleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will admit...this is exactly what I thought when I first conceived of getting WLS. I thought I could eat taco bell every night and the sleeve would just limit my portions. Yeah, it works that way for about 3-6 months....then the honeymoon ends for alot of us. Luckily, it was research on this website, and a really good NUT that woke me up to the truth.... that I had to learn some new ways to eat. Somehow, I always knew it....but finally it really sunk in. -
Return to work - highly physical jobs
Butterthebean replied to HumorMe00's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went back to work in late June (here in Houston) and it was very tough getting in my Water, but I managed. By then I was 6 weeks out and doing great with Fluid intake. I will admit my energy levels weren't great and my heat tolerance was extremely low. But within 2 weeks I was astounded at my improvement. I felt so much better than I did pre-op, even though I was still recovering. I really had to make hydration a priority but I suffered no ill effects. I also wasn't allowed any light duty due to the nature of my employment, so I had to hit the ground running. Light duty would have been a good way to ease back into things. -
I don't get a runny nose but my dogs are certainly reaping the benefits of my sleeved life. They get way more leftovers than they ever did before.

What should I do with leftover cookie batter?

It's a shame we have to do that but yes....for cookie dough....one can't be too careful. -

Return to work - highly physical jobs
Butterthebean replied to HumorMe00's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like my job. 12 hour rotating shifts in a chemical plant. Outside in the weather. Must be able to lift 50 lbs...climb stairs and ladders all day, and yes...dumping 70 lb sacks of powder many times daily. I took off 6 weeks. Honestly, I think I could have been back at 4 weeks. My biggest problem was on surgery day it was springtime...mild temps. By the time I was released, it was full on summer and I was not acclimated to the heat. It kicked my butt the first 2 weeks. And my energy was not quite 100% of course due to such low calories. But it got much better very quickly. -
Breaking the stall

My only question is....if breakfast is coffee and fruit, and lunch is a big salad....where's the protein? Did he give you a target to hit for protein grams? -
Just made goal at 7 months
Butterthebean replied to ebonisekim's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
It makes at least 4-5 servings for me...12 oz servings. The spirulina I buy is in powdered form...it's just a Protein...a very green protein that will totally stain your clothes (don't ask me how I know). The chia seeds are great for giving it a little heft and texture, and they help with regularity issues. And the fruit does give it a bit of sugar....but you can adjust the amount of fruit up or down to change that. It does not taste sweet at all, but more fruit might make it taste sweet. Okay...end of thread jack. -

Send to me as is. I always loved cookie dough way more than actual cookies. -
can you tell me what you think this was?

If you don't have a list or a nutritionist and you're not sure what to eat, here's some general guidelines you could consider...although I think the timetable on this link is a little conservative. But better safe than sorry. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/gastric-sleeve-diet.html -

PB2 is a Peanut Butter substitute. It's basically dehydrated peanuts. It's a powder, you mix it with Water and it makes peanut butter...but much healthier than the regular stuff. Do you have an approved foods lists for soft foods? There's alot of info floating around here...but off the top of my head I ate alot of cottage cheese, oatmeal, chili with the meat finely ground, scrambled eggs....when do you go on solid foods? -

Nice job. You look terrific and I know you must feel the same. -

Butterthebean replied to Ginagirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gina when was you surgery date?....that's relevant here. Are you on soft foods? If you are dumping, the Peanut Butter is full of sugar. Instead try some PB2. It's got all the Protein, alot less sugar. And as Laura said, if you don't feel right, stop eating. I understand why you tried to "help things out"....makes perfect sense. But if you were dumping...or perhaps reaching your sleeve limit, more food to process is just going to make it harder on your new sleeve. Next time try some cottage cheese instead, if you like that. But go easy....some people have a similar sensitivity to dairy after being sleeved. -

That's awesome. I love to hike. Sadly the highway overpasses are the highest peaks around here. But I still get out on the trails every chance I get.

From what I've read the amounts we are talking about are only hard on people with kidney dysfunction already. Normal healthy kidneys should easily be able to handle 80-100 grams of protein every day. Of course, in the early post op stages it can be very difficult to eat that much but it gets easier.

Ok...so my 2 take home points from that article are....the patients didn't lose much BMI on average (barely 12 BMI points dropped) but did maintain said loss over 5 years. So that's kind of a good news/bad news article.
-
So you're saying that's just a BMI of 35? Shoot they threw me off with that other stuff.
