Hi Tina...glad to see another distance runner. I've run 2 half marathons and was training for a full in November. Unfortunately that just got postponed till after the first of the year due to upcoming TT surgery, a good trade off I think. As for fuels....I really hate the gels, but I'm unsulin resistant and have learned I do better without any high sugar foods. I have tried a few and the only one I like is called Pocket Fuel. It's an almond butter based gel with all natural ingredients. They have quite a few flavors and basically, if you like almond butter, you'll like these. I found them at the local running store but also online. But for me personally, I have learned to subscribe to a whole different method of fueling. There are many good books on the topic of running in a fat burning zone rather than the sugar burning zone, but one of my favorites is "Slow Burn" by Stu Mittleman. The premise is you learn to run a bit slower to keep your heart rate in a zone that you don't need to refuel. You predominantly burn body fat as opposed to burning up your glycogen stores. The typical person can only hold 60-90 minutes worth of glycogen. We hold weeks and weeks worth of fat, so you will not run out of fuel. It's a difficult process to build up too, but I've been working it for several months now and I can run 10 miles on almost no carbs whatsoever. Typical prerun meal for me will be 2 boiled eggs and a piece of cheese or almonds. No carb loading, no gels, none of that stuff for me. Granted, I'm not the world's fastest runner (staying in this zone necessitates keeping the HR down) but I can run a long way without gels and gu's. The grandfather of this technique is a guy named Phil Maffetone. He trained many world champion triathaletes using this method. It's worth a google if you're interested. Good luck, and feel free to revive that old distance runners thread.

Could everyone stop annoying me? And get rid of all this food!
Butterthebean commented on gamergirl's blog entry in Gamergirl's Blog
I've been irratable for ....oh.....44 years I guess. Just who I am. Food or no food. But whoa momma when my coworkers surround me with unneccessary boxes of donuts and pizza everyday because they're too lazy to cook....and then insist that 1 will not hurt me. The real irritation comes out. But sounds like you're facing the big hurdle that we all must learn to deal with...temptations in the real world. It's so much easier to stay on plan at home, in our unique environment and our routine. Once we get away from that...it's a challenge. But one that won't go away so we have no choice but to master it. Good for you for recognizing it. It will get easier each time. Just don't get complacent, because that's also easy to do in time. -
Oh my....well, I don't really like calling doctors either, but I'd do that before I'd take an online diagnosis from a sleeve website based on such a non specific symptom. I hope you find an answer, but if it's bothering you I'd involve a doctor.

What's the Worst Diet Advice You've Received?
Butterthebean replied to Greeknugget's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lemme guess...your nut was like my nut....about 10% body fat. I mean don't former alcoholics lead the group at AA? Shouldn't people like us be NUTs for WLS patients? Those forever skinny people have no clue what it's like. -
Is it something to do with steers and.....oh nevermind.

I don't believe it has any affects on nutrient absorption since nutrients are mostly absorbed in the GI tract anyway, not the stomach. But it can certainly make you hungry sooner. In my experience, the longer I wait to drink, the longer it is before I'm hungry again.

I think the majority of sleevers have this problem initially because we simply cannot eat enough fiber....nor are we eating fiber rich foods in the beginning. I used miralax in the early months. Once I was able...chia seeds in my protein shakes and fiber one cereal really helped as well. 1/2 cup of fiber one a day works miracles, and tastes better than miralax.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?
Butterthebean replied to *Dean*'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
Well for one thing, we always do better on race day than in training. The enthusiasm of the event and the crowd will pump you up and carry you farther than normal. So that right there will help. But even if it doesn't....I've never been to a run where people didn't start walking within the first 2 minutes. People are going to walk and there's no shame in it. I still have days where I can't run 5K without walking, and other days where I feel like I can run a marathon. So my point is go and have fun, and if you have to walk for a minute don't worry about it. You'll still finish and have reason to be proud. -
Please dont judge me but.....
Butterthebean replied to clmsntgrgrl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, no judgement here but just an observation and a question. I'm sure that egg was good, the first food I ate once I was allowed was a scrambled egg and it was the best damn egg I ever ate. But if you're having a hard time getting in liquid protein, how did you get in solid food? The liquid should go down even easier no? Is it just that you're sick of protein shakes by now? That's understandable, I think most of us were. Just go forward from here and know this is the toughest it's going to be. It gets much easier very soon. Stick it out....keep drinking that water and those shakes. Very soon you won't have to drink them any more. -

I had some EAS powder one time that had a similar taste. Just mixing it up made me gag. So glad I found something I liked.

Pre-op...my hunger was driven by my constant need to stuff carbs down my pie hole. I was seriously insulin resistant, and I got caught up in a cycle of eating high carbs foods every 3 hours....having huge insulin spikes followed by the inevitable insulin crash which left me shaky, irratable and weak. And that crash would usually hit like clockwork 3 hours after a meal....unless I ate something before hand, which I pretty much programmed myself to do without even thinking about it. I was constantly working to avert the next crash by planning my next meal just in time to avoid it. And for me, the higher carb foods worked better to avoid the crash so that's what I always sought. My stomach never had a chance to get empty or make any grumbling noises....there was always something fresh going in. My blood sugar spikes and crashes necessitated it. This lasted at least 20 years I'm sorry to say. It was a miserable existence. Now....I do get the empty feeling, and sometimes a grumbling feeling. But I do not get weak, shaky or irratable because I eat fairly low carb (80-95g/day) and I spread those out through out the day....no one meal has a large portion of carbs unless it's a big salad or some fruit. Previously it was all starches.

It's been many years since I've been in a gym. I do everything at home. But the last time I did belong to a gym, a lady dropped her phone while talking and walking on the treadmill. The treadmill sucked the phone underneath and crushed it....and she was yelling at the manager and threatening to sue if he didn't pay for her new phone. Every afternoon all of the treadmills would be occupied with soccer moms either talking or texting on the cell phone while "walking". How you can text and still work hard enough to lose weight I have no idea.

So damn hungry...
Butterthebean replied to holidayexpressions's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exactly. It's not always acid or thirst (although it can be and it's worth ruling those out...definitely) and the liquid diet does almost nothing to fill you up. Once you start on solid foods however, the restriction will kick into full force and very little food will leave you feeling like you just ate the Thanksgiving turkey. When I was on liquids, I could drink tons of Water, but even a mouth full of milk left me incredibly full instantly...so that might be worth a try if you're feeling like bottomless pit. It didn't last but at least it was a little relief in a healthy and safe manner. -
