Need Some Help Figuring This Out, Please...
Butterthebean replied to babzmcgee's topic in Food and Nutrition
As you lose weight your BMR also gets lower. It takes less energy to move your body around because it's smaller. Eventually your BMR levels out with your caloric intake. When that happens you will not lose weight. If that has happened to you, you have to do one of two things...either up your BMR or lower your caloric intake. To up your BMR, you either need to increase the intensity, duration or frequency of your workouts. Completely changing your workout routine is akin to increasing the intensity, so that can work for you. Also, not all calories are created equal. Sugars and high glycemic carbs (starches) will actually help your body store fat, rather than burn it. -

Are you on a PC or the mobile app? On the mobile app you hit the "Home" button at the bottom of the screen, then the "daily" button up top and it will show you all the nutrients for the day so far, including carbs. Also you hit "my diary" down at the bottom and then click on any food on your diary and it will show you the info for that food. On a PC, just click "food" up top and it should take you to your food diary for the day. Down at the bottom should be your totals for that day including carbs. -
What Is The Portion Size?
Butterthebean replied to scorpion509's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your portion size sounds fine. It's not too much, but it does sound like you have a healthy sleeve and not alot of inflammation...otherwise your portions would be much smaller. If you don't feel full, it's really not too much at this point. If it's uncomfortable after eating, then scale it back. As for being cold...doesn't low Iron cause that? Since you're not eating anything, you may need a supplement...I'd take that one up with your NUT or Doc. -
Co-Workers Talking About Me!
Butterthebean replied to Sue Vsg Bariatric's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My first thought was it was pure speculation because someone was jealous of the weightloss. -
Notime, I was a HUGE carboholic. I lived on starches. I truely believe I was addicted to them....like a meth addict. I could not go 2-3 hours without some carbs or sugar. If I did, my body reacted violently. I didn't like that reaction, so I subconsciously trained myself to eat before it could kick in. I was like a fuctioning alcoholic. I did everything I wanted to do, but I made sure the carbs were always close by. When I first met my surgeon I told him how concerned I was about this, and that I didn't think I could kick the addiction. He told me by the time I was allowed to eat again, it would be gone. My NUT drilled it into me how bad those starches were, but it never really sunk in until I learned about and understood the chemical reaction that eating those carbs and sugars had inside my body. Now I'm repulsed by it and don't want to go back. I anyone is interested, watch the movie "Fathead". It's mostly a criticism of the movie "Supersize Me", but right in the middle it gives a real good explanation of what happens when you eat high glycemic foods. It's basically a lose/lose situation.

Well, first of all, I eat closer to 60 carbs a day. But the key is they are low glycemic carbs....mostly. If I have a high glycemic carb it's right before or during a workout. Those will give you instant energy basically. But the bulk of my carbs are low glycemic and those are the ones that give you energy throughout the day (think green veggies). Now to your real question, I've never heard of low carbs causing cravings. For me, if I don't eat enough carbs, I feel weak and shaky. Now, in my old life if I felt this way, I would go right for some junk food. But now I am learning to eat in a way that prevents this from happening by eating low glycemic carbs throughout the day, spread out in small amounts to sustain me. What I have read that causes cravings is high glycemic carbs...think starches and sugars. They do cause cravings, especially in large doses. If your small amount of carbs consist of any starches, they may be doing more harm than good....IMO. Even whole wheat healthy breads and pastas are still high glycemic. Which means they are okay if you are about to go on a 5 mile hike, but I wouldn't have them on a regular basis because they cause your blood sugar to rise, releasing insulin which helps your body store fat. I'm not telling anyone to cut them out completely if they don't want to, just save them for long bouts of exercise...not for dinner right before bed. As for the cravings, I think we all have the occasional craving every now and then. I haven't eaten anything yet that doesn't agree with me, which is a blessing but also a curse. It means I have to supply all the will power. But I look at all the progress I've made and I think, why would I want to take a step back by eating this or that junk? That's what keeps me moving forward.

Massindex, that is very impressive. You are a shining example to what is possible. I'm hoping to do a triathalon next year, obviously a shorter one. Keep it up.

Old Habits Are Hard To Break, The Art Of Not Wasting Food
Butterthebean replied to CamarilloCA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep I'm pretty picky about what I give my dogs. Primarily it will be meat and meat only. Occasionally they might get a small bite of cheese or a tiny taste of scrambled egg beaters. They don't get junk because there is no junk on my plate. My dogs are healthy, fit and very active. We work hard to walk their little legs off. Two regular walks a day plus about 2-3 times a week we take them to the local woodland trails for about a 5 mile hike. They love that because it ends at a lake and they get to jump in. My FIL, now he is one of those that thinks the only way to get a dog to love you is to give it cinnamon rolls. We have had to keep a close eye on our dogs whenever we visit him, because he will sneak them biscuits with butter and sugar while we aren't looking. His dog can barely walk because it's so fat. It needs a canine VSG. -
I find on long bike rides that I feel better if I eat 2 fig newtons before I start and then 2 more every hour as I ride. It's enough to keep me going. Without those quickly digest able carbs I will feel shaky after 30 minutes.

Old Habits Are Hard To Break, The Art Of Not Wasting Food

I have been known lately to let my dogs help me finish something because I hate leaving those last 2 bites. Before surgery they didn't get much off my plate. -
Here's a question....do atheists tend to be more liberal leaning in their political views as a group? I know I am and so are the few I know, but just wondering about the masses. Funny story. My FIL is a fundamentalist, conservative, baptist preacher. When I first met my wife we went to his services a few Sunday's. In every service he would mention that being a good Christian meant loving your country and supporting your president. This was when W was in office. He mentioned it every Sunday. Then Obama got elected, and he hasn't mentioned it since.

Have you ever checked out the salads at Subway? I eat them all the time. They will make any sandwich into a salad. They just replace the bread with a bowl full of lettuce, then all the sandwich stuff on top. I usually get a double meat salad, and that is 2 or 3 meals for me. I'll eat the meat, most of the veggies and some of the lettuce.

So it's basically just suspension training? Looks tuff but effective.

What kind of symptoms did you have to make you go back to the doctor? -
You could do it now Coolbreeze. Just cut out 2 or 3 of the exercises if you need to. Nothing wrong with starting small and building up. Do one circuit and see how you feel. You may feel compelled to do another and another.

I never heard of TRX but I'll have to check into it. Although there are no Y's anywhere near me. I kinda live in the sticks.

I don't have anyone on my "ignore" list because everyone can occasionally have something to contribute. But I will say, they have closed better threads than this.
