I've Gained Weight 3 Weeks Out?
Butterthebean replied to Kyrie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's a link in my sig about stalls. It explains what's happening. Your gain is not real common but it's also nothing to be alarmed about. It's purely water. You know it's not fat. It can't be. It takes the body time to kick into a real fat burning state. It's more complicated than just not eating and expecting the body to burn away the calories. It's a delayed action. Be patient. Keep walking as much as possible. Find a way to walk on your non school days. How high is your water intake and how many carbs are you eating? Too little water or too many carbs can make delay your losses at this point. -
Very nice job. You must feel terrific.

I have to use kale in mine because I'm allergic to spinach. I also by the bags of frozen mixed fruit and it comes out ice cold. The big thing post op will be protein. So I add protein powder to mine to make it complete nutritionally.

Help Lump In My Throat
Butterthebean replied to jamill527's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sorry to hear that. Probably the steak is long gone but possibly you aggravated the throat tissue somehow and there is some minor inflammation. Maybe that steak wasn't well chewed or just the spicy pepper didn't agree with you. You might try sucking on some ice. The cold ice will ease inflammation. -
Is that anything like moleskin? I've used moleskin before and it works well.

Impact Of Pain Medicine On Post Workout Muscle Growth
Butterthebean replied to Fiddleman's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Sorry to hear that fiddle. Truly. I hope your options give you some relief. I understand your desire to get off NSAIDs. Have you considered acupuncture or some other holistic alternative medicine for temporary relief of pain? I'm considering doing acupuncture myself for my shoulder which has been bothering me for months. I'm also a big fan of trigger point early for pain relief. It won't cure you but might ease your pain. -
Hi Twyla. Welcome to the craziness.

Why we get fat is the same book as good calories bad calories. Just easier to read and much shorter. Start with that one. -

The 11 Most Destructive Nutrition Lies Ever Told................
Butterthebean replied to Beach Lover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great article. Somebody ought to have their ass kicked for that ridiculous food pyramid that misguided us so badly for so long. I have a special interest in #7...low carbs. As the article stated, a diet high in carbs might not have negative health effects for someone who is naturally lean. And who here is naturally lean? Not too many of us. But to circles back to the running community. Lots of them believe that a runners diet needs to consist of high carbs....often upwards of 65%. And look at the running community. Naturally lean... in general. But more and more people are proving that carbs aren't absolutely necessary to endurance exercise like running. A person can become "fat adapted"....capable of burning fat instead of glycogen during long steady state activity. My wife and I are training for a half marathon this month, and we did a 9 mile run the other day. I ran those miles on 2 boiled eggs and some almonds....virtually no carbs. My wife ran it fasted.....no food at all. All the while, we were making a game of pointing out all the gel and gu packs that people had dropped on the ground along the path. -
Ok.....blister update. Wow this thing is more painful than my broken toe back in September. I couldn't do my lunges today because of it, but I did get in an extra long swim. 25 laps.....my longest by far. So my totals so far are 18.2 miles running, 2400 meters swimming and 120 lunges.

Only if you run laps at the track with the vacuum on your shoulders. Yes yes and yes. We have to keep in mind why we're doing this. To improve our quality of life right?

What Do I Do Next In The Gym Re: Progress?
Butterthebean replied to outwithbenjiboi's topic in Fitness & Exercise
You've been given some good advice and I agree with the general theme....you should increase intensity. Increasing the weight will improve your strength. Increasing the reps will improve your vo2 max. Increasing the sets will improve your stamina. These are general statements of course because actually you'll be increasing all 3, but more so the one than the other two. I would warn that before attempting some advanced high intensity cross fit moves, seek out a coach or trainer to help you get your form down if you're not sure. Nothing will sidetrack your fitness routine faster than an injury. But definitely....if things are getting easy, you should increase the difficulty level or our calorie burn will taper off as will your fitness gains. Remember, you're not just burning calories.....you're also extending your life. -
Eating And Hydration Pre And Post Exercise
Butterthebean replied to Fluffnomore's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fluff....what I concentrate on is hydration before the workout and Protein after. It means I have to start drinking Water an hour before the workout and get down as much as possible, cause during the workout I will not be able to drink enough. Right now it probably takes you a long time to get down water or protein. And that is going to affect your workout some what. But in time your Fluid intake will get alot easier. Protein is good, but you can't workout without proper hydration. -
I'd love to hear that story. That sounds like some conversion. I do have some friends that went from being strict catholic to going to a UU church and they love it.

It's tough. While recovering from surgery on such a low calorie diet, it's hard not to lose some muscle mass. That's part of why they preach protein protein protein all the time. But still, us guys with larger than normal muscle mass....our bodies are going to try to dump some of it after surgery...trying to survive on less calories. In all honesty, it's not the worst thing in the world. I'm not as strong as I was, and while I'd like to be, I may never be. But I'm way more mobile than I ever thought possible. I can climb and run...and not lose my breath. It's a trade off, but I'm happy with it. I've also written about this phenomenon before, but it's surprising how much we lose in terms of being able to use our weight to our advantage. It's pure physics. It's surprising how often and in how many ways we used our size and weight. How many times have I grabbed the door handle of a heavy door and simply leaned back to let my weight pull it open. You don't realize you're doing this, until the day comes when you lean back and your weight isn't there to help. It takes time to relearn those movements. You think you've gotten weak but in reality you just don't have as much ass to throw around. You have to relearn how to use your momentum.

I'm wondering if you ever went to this. Seems interesting. Nothing like this in my area. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Seems like taking god out of church.....which is ok with me but not sure of that will cure all that I think is wrong with church. Maybe it will....with the right people. I'd certainly be curious enough to try it. What did you mean by your last line....about the big dramatic funeral being healthy? I kinda find them ....I dunno.....phony in a way. They seem more for the living than the dead. I told my wife to scatter my ashes to the wind while flying down the road on some bad ass chopper....that will be my funeral. Of course, she may have to get a biker boyfriend in order to make that happen....but I won't care. I'll be dead.

Funny Small Town Moment
Butterthebean replied to southernsoul's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Haha.....the tall one is cute. Oh wait....forget I said that. -
I am 6'2" and started at a bit over 400lbs. My doc thought I could hit 210. I hit 220 and that seemed like IT. I'm happy and healthy at this weight, and I'll likely stay here. I'm not rail thin, I could surely stand to lose a little more. My BF% is in 20.4. I'm good with that. I never wanted to be an underwear model. I can see some ab definition, that's good enough for me. I'm strong and I can do all the things athletically that I could never do before. Isn't that goal? It is to me. I've tried to lose more bit to do so means starving myself. Plus, when I do, the weight seems to come from places I don't want it to come from. My face gets gaunt. It's not pretty. I think I look better at this weight and most importantly.....it's sustainable.

Great Article On Low-Carb/high Fat Diets
Butterthebean replied to gamergirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just to reassure....my sleeve has always held more than people say. But it never impeded my weight loss apparently. Why? Because even though it will hold 12 oz doesn't mean I have to eat 12oz. I don't pack it full (usually). I weigh and measure, and learn to eat smaller portions. They leave me feeling not hungry, which is the goal....never full. And 18 months post op.....I still have a protein shake most days. I like them. They are my chocolate milk substitute. They are easy and convenient right after a hard workout. They are nutritionally sound. Why some doctors insist we get our protein "from real food" puzzles me. I know they are encouraging good eating habits, but protein shakes are nothing but a healthy protein supplement. Just like a multi vitamin. With a varied enough diet we wouldn't need a daily vitamin, but no doctor would tell you not to take a multi vitamin would they? No, because they know most people do not have a varied enough diet, so they encourage the supplement. A protein shake can be the same thing....as long as you're not too dependent on them all the time, they are a healthy and convenient nutritional aid. -

I felt the same way after watching the movie "fat head".....which pretty much agrees with Taubes. Btw.....for those that don't like long heavy books....read "why we get fat" instead. It's pretty much like the cliffs notes to "good calories bad calories." Same author, but an easier read.
