Anybody Do Any Barefoot Running?
Butterthebean replied to Butterthebean's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Went to a sports medicine specialist yesterday. I was wearing my vibrams, and low and behold, so was he. We had a long talk about them. He said he doesn't run barefoot but he does run in the vibrams. He says every Doctor has a different opinion. But he sees a lot of running injuries. And of the ones who were running barefoot or in minimalist shoes, 90% of them either did too much too soon, or continued running in a heel striking fashion. He said there is still that 10% that did everything right and still got hurt, but the percentage of shoed runners who do everything right and still get hurt is much higher. He said if it wasn't for runners he'd be out of business. I must admit I was happy to hear all that. Then he told me I may possibly have a torn rotator cuff, which was the actual reason for my visit. Not happy to hear that at all. -
6 months post op and suddenly I don't want to drink my Water. I realized today how little I've drank this past week. It's been much cooler lately and I've forgotten about my water. My doc just told me to up my calories as well. As soon as he said that, I realized I wasn't hungry either. I wonder if there is a correlation between not drinking enough and appetite. I know proper hydration aids weight loss, but I wonder if improper hydration suppresses appetite. Mine certainly feels that way. I was eating till 10 o'clock last night just to get in my calories. I feel like I'm regressing.

Tommy....I'm doing 25-35 mile rides pretty regularly now. And I can tell you it's no problem. But I've made 2 adjustments. First, my pre-ride hydration has gotten a lot better. I spend 30 minutes taking in as much water as I can before I ride. It's a pain but it pays off. Second, I now love my camelbak. I can wear it or just strap it to the bars. But I can sip all day and its easier grabbing the tube and drinking than having to reach down for a bottle.

Re-Focusing & Determined Not To Lose Hope
Butterthebean replied to Babysteppin's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Anybody can slide. What's important is that you caught yourself instead of letting it continue on. Hopefully you will get over this hurdle and accomplish your goals. It's never as easy as we want it to be unfortunately. -
I just finished week 8. I too was worried about my knees. I started out wearing neoprene sleeves and they helped some. But the best thing I did was read up on proper running form. I started out being a heel striker, but once I started making myself be a forefoot striker, shortening up my stride and bending my knees more (kinda squatting down a little) I started running with way less impact, and therefore less knee pain.

I've never ran an organized race, but I've done my share of bike rides. It never ceases to amaze me when I'm 50 miles out and some little old man blows by me on his bike made in 1952. -

After my regular run tonight in running shoes, I did a little more barefooted. On the grass it felt great. On the track, not really. But I think it would have felt good with the vibrams. I am already a forefoot striker, not a heel striker, so running barefooted feels natural. I just need to learn to land softer....more knee bend. I'll get there. -

Me too. I want to run a marathon someday. I just got some vibrams and I've been trotting around the yard the last few days. Tonight I wore them while doing the elliptical. -
I've done several MS150's, but none since having surgery. Looking forward to doing some next year. I don't foresee any problems though. I think you would have to be ultra vigilant about refueling, and you would have to break the "no drinking while eating" rule. But for an extreme event like that I don't see it as a problem.

Height, Weight, And Size Poll
Butterthebean replied to LeaveItToSleever's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Are guys allowed on this thread? 6'1" Starting weight was 401. That was 6 months ago. Now I'm 254. Weirdest number change for me....I started out wearing size 15 shoes (yes, I have big feet). Now I can easily wear 14. Without all that extra weight, my feet aren't as wide. But they probably aren't as long either because the weight surely pushes down on the arch to some degree, flattening it out and making your foot longer. -

Now That It's Cold, I'm Just Not Thirsty

I need to be more organized like you are. I work a crazy schedule, so from one day to the next my schedule changes drastically. The weird thing is up until this last week, it has not been a problem. -

You have done super well. And I'm jealous of your bench press. -
I'd like to join the club. I rarely miss a day. I do a little something at least. Some days I may even lift weights in the morning, then go jogging later that night. I love being active now.

Anybody got any cool suggestion about a new tattoo to celebrate your weightloss? I need some ides. I've got some ideas of my own, but my wife says I can't get any tattoos of naked women.

masseuse....is a female massage therapist. But a male is a masseur. But you have to go to an accredited massage therapy school for a year to know that little nugget....that's how you know I'm legit.

Old Habits Are Hard To Break, The Art Of Not Wasting Food
Butterthebean replied to CamarilloCA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My dog waits patiently outside the kitchen everytime I prepare any kind of food. As soon as I'm done, he's in there scowering the floor for anything I may have dropped. I love not having to pick up dropped food bits, but I don't know what that says about me that he's been trained to know there will likely be something on the floor. -
I work in a chemical plant wearing long sleeve coveralls, so most of me is covered at work. Even if it wasn't, tattoos here are a non issue. I do massage on the side, and none of my clients (that I know of) are bothered by tattoos. If they were, I wouldn't want them anyway. I'm not dependent on that business to pay the bills. I also work on and build bicycles on the side, and for that business I think the tattoos are actually preferred.

Probably both.

5 Days Post-Op And A Little Past Puree Stage?
Butterthebean replied to AaronRene14's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could keep pushing yourself and have no problems. But once you do cross over that line and create a problem, it will be too late, and their will be no warning sign telling you before then. The rules and schedules doctors set may be conservative, but they are that way for a reason. They would rather error on the side of safety than gamble with your health and well being. Most people are not even allowed purreed foods until 2 weeks post op. So why push yourself? You'll be eating regular foods before you know it, just less of them. You've got the rest of your life to eat. These few weeks are about setting yourself on a healthy path.
