Its not "whey" protein. The name is misleading. -

In need of some support.
Butterthebean replied to Becca0104's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Initially, it always seems like no matter what we do, the sleeve will work its magic. But gradually we get to the point that we need to do more because the sleeve does less. By then, many people have learned new eating behaviors that will help you continue to lose weight. But if you don't eat right and take care of yourself, the sleeve may not protect you from regain. The good news is the sleeve is still there, so if you jump back on the horse and start doing the things you know to do, the sleeve will help and you'll be back on track. -

Carbs post op - contributing to stall?
Butterthebean replied to stomlin75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html Didn't I already send you a link to this article? It sounds like the timing is right. You're probably right at it. Not all carbs are bad. Milk and fruits are good for you, as long as you are getting in your Protein. -
Need help-support-advice on my diet
Butterthebean replied to partofme!'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
You may have to back up a stage in your progression. Not everyone can advance at their doctor's pace. You may just need more time. If you've been sick, that would interfere with your sleeve healing, which would make things like turkey very difficult. There is nothing wrong with backing up for a couple of weeks. -
Sick of sweets! Ugh :-/
Butterthebean replied to rswa3319's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't tried them all, but the unflavored proteins I did try made me realize that "unflavored" did not mean "without taste". They reminded me of the smell of my hamster cage when I was a boy. Glad I like chocolate. -

Please check the ingredients label to see if whey protein is the first ingredient. There have been some protein shots with the word "whey" in the name but were predominantly collagen protein. Not sure if these are the same ones but you should check.

I know. It's funny. It's just a subtle change in technique that most people do not do naturally. Once I started doing it I suddenly felt 10 times better about running.
-
I read the book "Chi Running" plus several books about barefoot running. Once I adopted that running form I never had another knee pain because that running technique takes the impact off your joints and puts it on your muscles.
-
Recumbent stationary bike. That said, I have 1 torn ACL and 2 torn meniscus and I jog regularly. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but the more I jog the better my knees feel. I have a DVD of a guy who had his femur shattered. You can see the indention under his skin where the ACL used to be, but it's gone now. That leg is 3" shorter than the other one, but he runs like a deer. It's all about technique.

Gaining weight. HELP! Is this normal?
Butterthebean replied to Biellita165's topic in Food and Nutrition
Please read the link in my sig about stalls. You could just be retaining fluids faster than you are burning fat. It's perfectly normal and cannot last. Very soon you will have restored all your glycogen reserves but you will keep burning fat and the weight will fall back off. It's not 4 pounds of fat you've gained. That would take an additional 14,000 calories on top of what your body normally burns. I doubt you've ingested that many calories so it's not fat gain. You will be fine. -
I like the Quest bars because they have almost no net carbs, which is rare. But you have to warm them up before you eat them or they are too hard. A couple of hours on the dashboard or 15 seconds in the microwave will do the trick. But if you put them in the microwave be sure to take them out of the wrapper first or you will get quite a light show. Don't ask me how I know.

Granny, if you haven't already, start now logging your food into My Fitness Pal. Just seeing the effect that each thing you eat has on your daily totals can sometimes make those things seem less attractive. I know when I'm feeling weak, I'll put the tempting food into MFP ahead of time just to see what it's going to do to my daily totals. Often that alone will firm up my resolve not to eat it. And other times it will show me that, yes, today that one thing will be okay.

I don't like protein shakes but I like this...
Butterthebean replied to Eclectic82's topic in Food and Nutrition
The thing about collagen protein is it's great for the regeneration of connective tissue and skin. But after WLS what you need most is to prevent your muscles from going into a catabolic state. That's when your body starts burning your muscles for fuel because of your severely reduced intake of calories. You don't want that, but your body is happy to do it because it sees those muscles as unnecessary and actually detrimental to the survival of your other systems (like heart and lungs). Your body sees those muscles as a draw of calories that could be better used elsewhere. You have to save your muscles from yourself, and whey protein does that better than anything because it is absorbed so fast by the body. So pound for pound, it will do the most good for preventing a catabolic state than any other protein. There are other proteins that will do some good, but they are just not as fast absorbing as the whey. -

Hey Shamrock. Many of us went back to lifting weights as soon as the doc gave the okay. You know it will be tough at first, but the strength comes back. You will feel so much better without the extra body fat and once you start lifting you will look better and have less loose skin from the weight loss. When I started soft foods, I practically lived on scrambled eggs, finely ground chili, mustard egg salad and oatmeal. But even now at 7+ months out I still have Protein shakes almost every day. I've always liked them and since I'm always on the go they can be very convenient. Best of luck.
