In before the newbies take it over
Butterthebean replied to Butterthebean's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
There sure are alot of low carb people around here. I was eating low carb for a while, but my carbs are up there now. Yesterday I took in 100 carbs...but since most of those are low glycemic carbs, I don't think they had any adverse affects. I've been eating alot of salads and drinking green shakes to get in more healthy nutrients. It pushes my carbs up but I feel so much better. -
You breath and relax.....ahhhhh. Enjoy the peace.

Anyone gained the weight back?
Butterthebean replied to MrsGina's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My capacity to eat 8 months out is greatly increased from the early stages. Add to that a persons diminished metabolism after losing 100 and some pounds, and it becomes very possible to regain weight. It's true you won't be able to eat as much as before, but it won't take as much as before either...very important point that constantly gets overlooked. After eating 600-800 calories for many months on end and losing weight, your metabolism is much much lower. That's where exercise and making healthy food choices will keep you on the right path. Go back to eating potato chips and sodas all day every day and it will be easy to regain the weight. -

Starting an Exercise Program with a "bum" Knee
Butterthebean replied to Knitter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could get some resistance bands and do a full body workout at home. There are also many home workout dvds that are done seated if you're knee is real bad. They are mainly aimed at seniors and people confined to wheelchairs. That might work for you if you can't stand very well. Also, if you have access to an indoor pool, I'd definitely swim and/or do water aerobics. -

Most doctors here in the States have a "cash" price for people with no insurance. Some are a better deal than others. Many have partnerships with organizations that specialize in financing surgeries.....if you don't want to go to Mexico, this could be your option. -
So this will be the "saggy skin" forum? I'm in.

Don't give up. Appeal!!!! But even if they don't pay, try to make it happen. Knowing what I know now, I would do anything I had to if my insurance had not paid. It's just too beneficial, too important. Your life is in the balance. Invest in yourself or you may not live to spend your 401K. -
Cool. I'm 20 pounds from my docs goal. Maybe not a vet but not a newbie either. I propose a ban in this forum on stalls, soft foods and complaining about complainers who complain too much.

It's amazing what kind of dogmatic beliefs the so called "experts" will hang onto. Check out the book "Slow Burn" by Stu Mittleton. That guy ran 1000 miles in 7 days without eating "bad carbs". It's all about retraining your body to burn fat for fuel instead of sugar. Your body can only hold so much glycogen (sugar). But we have infinitely more fat reserves, even at goal weight.

New lifestyle- Vegan!
Butterthebean replied to vonego82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I personally have been getting real sick of red meat. I've been trying to add more vegetables to my diet lately. I've been making green shakes everyday and they are very satisfying and tasty. I add Protein powder to them and I have no problem getting in my protein. I also eat salads just about every day and I will add some fish or chicken, cheese and boiled egg whites to get my protein. Plus I make my own ranch dressing out of greek yogurt and skim milk and it's mostly protein. I know that's not exactly vegan but I'm taking baby steps away from the adkins/paleo style diet I was eating in the beginning. As for vegan protein powders, there are some good ones out there now. Hemp Protein Powder is very good, and I've been using sprouted brown rice protein powder lately in my green shakes. It's a very good protein. The problem with most vegan protein powders is they do not absorb as fast as whey, which is why whey is the one most recommended to sleevers. -
Ouch Jhansen....that does not sound like it was very fun. I feel for you. Injury is my biggest fear. I've torn muscles before and I know how difficult it can be, but that is preferable to a torn tendon or ligament..requiring surgery. Then your downtime would have been even greater. Had you continued to press on that might have been the result. Glad you're on the mend and hope you're back on the road soon.

Reading Material
Butterthebean replied to noellegz1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"The Sleeved Life" is a really good book... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1475179693/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i01 I also recommend "The End Of Overeating" and "Why We Get Fat". They have nothing to do with being sleeved, but are focused on nutrition and ending bad eating habits...which are paramount to being a successful sleeve patient. -
Check out www.Chirunning.com I read his book and bought the DVD. He teaches a way to run that is highly efficient, reduces injuries and is pain free. The technique is fairly involved, it's like learning to run all over again, but once you start getting it down running is fun and easier. I love it. Best of all, no aches or pains. I got one knee with a torn ACL and meniscus...and that's the good knee. But I run with no knee pain whatsoever now.

That's awesome. I need to do the same. I need to get in a couple of organized runs before the 1/2 marathon. I just need to find one that works with my schedule. Good luck. And don't worry about where you will place. It's your first one. Enjoy it. You will be a long way from the back of the field. There will be people walking the whole way.

Just How Much Is Everyone Exercising?

I'm with you...my bike is collecting dust right now because of the weather. -
can someone evaluate this exercise plan?
Butterthebean replied to Fiddleman's topic in Food and Nutrition
New rules of lifting is a great book for beginners. I would pick one of those plans out of there and follow it for a few months. Lifting weights is extremely tiring at first. But the endurance comes fairly quickly. If you can get past the first month you will feel much better. I would try to spend an hour 2-3 times per week doing one of those full body routines. That will build you a nice base and you can get more advanced later. "Starting Strength" is another great book. It's primarily for building strength in young athletes, but it works for anyone. If building pure strength is your goal, that's a good program. -
I prayed for brownies and got some last night. But I'm not sure where to log it on MyFitnessPal. Should I log it under "Evening Snack" or "Cardio"?

I am 6 months out and I think that I messed up my sleeve:(
Butterthebean replied to katrina81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Katrina, I just found this thread. Are you doing better? For me my capacity to eat has definitely increased. One of the most effective tricks I know for making myself feel full is to add some roughage to my diet. So instead of eating just a piece of lunch meat, I'll roll it up in a lettuce leaf. Somehow that lettuce makes it feel like so much more without really adding any calories. Works with a piece of cheese too. And bacon. -

Commercial drivers license. I used to be a truck driver for a short period of time. O.T.R .(over the road) Sleever still is. Here in the states CDL drivers have stricter regulations than regular drivers, even when we are in our personal car. -

Oh I feel you....I still have my CDL and I'm afraid to even get pulled over for speeding because I know I can't take defensive driving. It will go on my record. Even in our personal car we still are held to a higher standard. But you know who isn't? Cops. Judges. Go figure.
