I've heard this too....many times. But I've yet to see any documentation of how it works. If there is some change taking place at the metabolic level due to hormonal changes after surgery, some one please put up a link to that information because I've never found it. I do think that the change in behavior makes for success. What the sleeve does is give you a fighting chance by reducing the hunger that most of us have always given in to, and by reducing the capacity to eat long enough to learn new eating behaviors. It's also a fact that the post sleeve diet of lower carbs and higher protein helps tremendously in reducing appetite, and putting our bodies into a fat burning stage rather than a fat storing stage. Many of us ate way too many starches before surgery which only helped us store fat regardless of how many or how few calories we ate. There is very little room in the post surgical diet for those starches, which helps keep our blood sugar levels in check, which in turn promotes fat burning.

The best thing for me to do is never eat a burger or a donut again. Otherwise I just want more. The sugar affects my insulin in such a way as to increase my cravings to uncontrollable levels. Not to mention that I feel better putting healthy food in my body. Does that make me a sleeve nazi, cause that term is getting thrown around a lot and it's kind of offensive to someone like me whose great grandparents immigrated here from Germany.

New sleeve but iit doesnt feel restricted
Butterthebean replied to cyncitygirl's topic in Food and Nutrition
The good news is, in time you'll be able to measure with your eyes much more accurately, and you won't need the scale all the time. I still use my scale and/or a measuring cup almost everyday, but most of the time it's merely as a back up so I don't slip into any bad habits of putting too much food on my plate and then forcing myself to finish them. The urge to clean my plate has always been strong with me.....thanks Mom and Dad. -

I don't think it's anything to worry about. It means you're healing nicely. There is very little inflammation, unlike some people who deal with inflammation for weeks. I was drinking 8 oz Protein shakes the first week with no problem. It hasn't hurt my weight loss any. The most important thing for me was just to be diligent about measuring my portions and stoping with that. I don't try to eat till I'm full ever. And I don't rely on my feelings of satiety to tell me when to stop eating because frankly I don't trust them. I eat my measured portions and stop. The nice part is I've realized that if I do that, I will be satisfied...it just might take a while to realize it. But I will not still be hungry, and thats my goal...to stop eating when I'm no longer hungry, which is a hard thing to recognize without the help of measured portions. I think this issue is just like the rate of weight loss issue....you shouldn't compare yourself with others because the differences are just too varied. -

Cheeseburgers?

I apologize if it seemed so....I was not angry and was certainly not trying to be rude. I was only trying to offer a different view point. -

I think you have anger management issues, not to mention you're just plain rude. If someone can't disagree with you without you resorting to name calling....sheesh. You said there is life after surgery, and made it sound like that life included eating junk food. I just asked the rhetorical question, why does life have to be about eating food that we know is bad for us? That was the kind of thinking that got me to the point I was before surgery, and I can't be the only one. -

Well, it's going to be a struggle no matter what, but it's doable. You've got the right idea. Separate the 2 workouts as far apart as possible. One first thing in the morning and the other at night is ideal. Also, you have to consider your food intake on those days, especially carbs. You may have to eat more than you normally do on those days you're doing 2 workouts to fuel your body. Lastly, I would consider not doing resistance training for my legs within 24 hours of a run. Your best bet would be to run in the AM and do some upper body training in the PM. Then, do legs the next AM and don't run until the following AM....that gives you the 24 hours between runs and lower body workouts. I don't know your age but unless you're a highly trained athlete with youth on your side your muscles need that recovery time as much as they need the exercise. I think you can do it. I can relate to your schedule. I work 12 hour shifts with an hour commute each way. I do more exercise on my days off work, and when I'm working my workouts tend to be shorter and easier. It all evens out in the end though.

Creamy Peter Pan is like the forbidden fruit to me. Don't leave me at home alone with a jar or bad things will happen.

Sounds like it's going well. You're on the road to a new life now. Best of luck. -
If you're going to keep throwing around the bully label, at least use it correctly and not just because somebody criticized you.

Cheeseburgers?
Butterthebean replied to Luckystar12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So eating half a Big Mac is eating healthy? And "life" means eating a Big Mac and Crispy Creme donuts? Or more to the point, is "life" eating what you want, when you want? Maybe life means not being a slave to cravings for crappy food that I used to eat, even half of it. -
Yeah...I have to call BS on that. You were calling her out in your very first post and you're right back at it. You keep mentioning her. What's the problem? You're recovery is going well and you let everyone know it. Can't she talk about her recovery? You may not want to hear it because it doesn't paint the prettiest of pictures, but you are no one to tell her or anyone else to "move on." You just joined, she's been here. If you don't like the tone here...you can move on. Or you can put her on your "ignore" preferences and you'll never have to read her posts again. But what you won't do is try to silence her or anyone else on this forum from expressing their opinion and telling their story. You get your input, she gets hers and I'll throw in mine. If anyone doesn't like it...I don't care.

You seem to be contradicting yourself here. You say Frank has every right to his opinion regardless of how few posts he has, but the OP needs to be discredited because he/she only has one post. There is a word for that...oh yeah...hypocritical. And you...who just joined what....4 days ago??? Telling us how much you think you know about Iggy and her intentions. You don't know squat. You weren't around when she was posting daily from intensive care.

If you like chips...try putting some sliced turkey pepperoni in the microwave for a minute. They come out crispy like little chips. Then dip in hummus...yum. Or make you're own ranch dip out of fat free greek yogurt and skim milk.

Running/walking progress by St Patricks day
Butterthebean replied to Fiddleman's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Be careful about increasing your speed. Consider increasing it for a minute or 2 in the middle of the run and see how you feel. I'm much slower than Fiddleman, but I just accept it. I've been increasing the distance of my runs faster than the speed I run. I don't mind being slow because I too and very wary of injuries. Here's a tip for going faster though. While you're running, imagine your body leaning forward at the ankles (not the waist). This will cause you to speed up without adding any extra effort on your part, other than your feet will have to move faster to catch up. This is how I run, when I want to speed up, I lean forward at the ankles. When I want to slow down, I straighten back up. -
Judy, people have band to sleeve revisions all the time who have not yet regained all their weight. But the band becomes a problem and they need to remove it...and they know that if they simply remove that and do nothing else the weight will come back on in a hurry due to the change in metabolism. In those cases I'm all for it. On the other hand, you've got a young 20 something who is 15 pounds overweight and doesn't want to have to fight weight problems in the future so she has WLS...I'm not sure I support that. Because as you say, she still will have to do the same things to keep the weight off in the future regardless of whether or not she has the surgery. I think the surgery is great for people who already have the weight and are having trouble getting it off. The sleeve gives you a chance to lose it but you have to do the work to keep it off. For people who simply see the weight gain as inevitable, and want to prevent obsesity related problems in the future....I truly believe those people can prevent those issues with the same attention to health and nutrition without having surgery if they commit before the weight gain has gotten out of control.... UNLESS...there are diagnosed, underlying medical conditions which will lead to obesity regardless.....like disorders of the thyroid. Ought these people have WLS as a preventative measure when they know obesity is coming regardless of what they do? I don't know enough about thyroid disorders to know how likely that scenario is, but I'm willing to at least consider the possibility in these cirucumstances.

How are you doing on the "emotional" side of being skinny?
Butterthebean replied to CowgirlJane's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
You should read the book "The End Of Overeating." It talks about how food companies have done research and found that there is a certain ratio of sugar, salt and fat, that when blended together in any recipe, will make people physically crave that food more and make them eat even when they are not hungry. It's a biochemical reaction, not a lack of self control, and the food companies are designing their foods to take advantage of this....from processed foods to restaurants...all of them. So yes, any foods with those 3 ingredients will push your will power. And if you look, all "yummy" processed foods have those 3 in abundance. BTW....it's not an evil plot by the food companies and restaurants. It's just what they've found that sells. -
I would do the same thing if I kept peanut butter in the house. Now I just buy the PB2 so it's much harder to do that. Regular PB is way to easy to eat out of the jar.
