  1. I have my surgery on Monday and I've only lost 11 pounds so far! I didn't even lose anything between yesterday and today! AGghh...I'm a little worried it might not be enough. I just wanted to know what everyone else has lost on their pre op diets? Ive been on a protein only shakes for 10 days and then tomorrow, I'll be on clear liquids. I'm hoping to lose at least 2-4 more pounds but who knows. Do you think 11 pounds is enough? Thanks!
  2. starting pureed stage tomorrow! So excited! Working on my grocery list! :)

No Weight Loss Since Lap Band Surgery (july 11)

I'm sorry to hear about that. Are you eating protein first, then fruits and vegies? Do you snack in between meals? Also, many people have problem with bread. You may try toasting it if you aren't already doing so. Chewing may also be a problem. You are supposed to be chewing 20 to 30 bites. Also, hydration is a big deal. If water bores you, maybe try some crystal lite? Best of luck to you! Make sure to bring up your concerns with your doctor! You probably just haven't reached "the green zone".

    <sigh>

As far as I know, sleep studies are usually standard before getting surgery. I think it has something to do with for when they put you to sleep during surgery. They want to make sure you will be okay. You may have to wear the face mask during surgery. LOTS of people have sleep anea. I was shocked to hear that I didn't actually. My twin sister does. Anyways, it will be okay. You are with many other people in this. Good luck! Oh and by the way, you are lucky they put the mask on you that same night. Most of the time they make you come back if you have sleep apnea and you have to stay a whole other night with the mask on.

    My Experience

My experience thus far has been surprisingly easy. I just wanted to share it so those that are going to be getting the band soon will have a little insight. I started my pre op diet on November 11th. After a few days of only drinking the recommended protein drinks and being really sick, I switched to Carnation Instant Breakfast, which is very tasty. I wasn't getting as much protein as with the other drinks, but I was no longer sick so honestly, I didn't care. I still recommend following your doctors instructions, but for me, I just couldn't handle the constant throwing up and nautiousness. The day of surgery I had lost 14 pounds which is a good amount to lose. I even cheated a couple of times (again, not recommended). I had surgery on November 21st. I had my mom drive me to the hospital and we arrived at 8AM. Everything went pretty quickly. I got into the hospital gown, they started my IV, gave me a shot in my stomach (which I didn't even feel), took some blood, spoke to my nutritionist who told me what to expect, spoke to the anesthesiologist and was eventually wheeled into the surgery room. They had me scoot over to the surgery table, they put out my arms, and that was the last thing I remembered. I woke up in the recovery room. I didn't feel any pain whatsoever and they kept trying to push the pain meds. I kept telling them that I didn't need it. However, my room was not ready yet so I was stuck there for quite a while. Eventually, I started getting really frustrated. I think someone gave me something to relax me a bit but I'm not sure. I was eventually wheeled into my room. I was fine until I started to get figity again. I started to get upset and regret what I had done. I was painfully aware of the foley catheder and was afraid to move. My mom was in the room with me and told the nurse that I may need some pain meds. Honestly, I don't think I was in any pain, but boy did that medicine help soothe and calm me! The nurse came in to get up to walk around 10:30 PM. That walk was horrible! Walking with the catheder was extremely uncomfortable and I also became really nautious. When I got back to my room, I sat in the chair which actually felt better than laying in the bed. The chair is where I stayed until they came to get me the next morning for my Upper GI. I honestly thought they had forgotten me the whole night lol. The nurse finally came to take out the catheder (it didn't hurt at all and I was soo ready because honestly, having to deal with that thing was the worst part of it all) I was able to relax for a while after the test before the nurse came to get me up to walk again. That time was a lot better. The nurse then brought in my ounce of water which I sipped throughout the hour with no problem. She got me up to walk again, I relaxed for another hour, and then it was time to go. My time at home has been fine. I was worried about my liquid consumption at first, as the information they gave me said I was supposed to be taking in a lot more than I was. I stopped taking my pain medication because it wasn't helping anything. Honestly, the only pain I felt was at the incision sites. It hurts when I move sometimes. I was only on clear liquids for two days, and I'll be on full liquids until Tuesday. I haven't been hungry at all and have had very little gas pain. If I start to feel the gurgling in my stomach, I take some Gas X strips and it takes care of it. I've been drinking SF Carnation Instant Breakfast, SF Popcycles, Water, Gatorade (everything that was suggested and I feel fine and full). I made some egg drop soup last night and had a few spoon fulls of that. Oh and the best thing of all??!!! I've lost 22 pounds since I started my pre op diet! It's amazing! That means I've lost 8 pound since the surgery! I didn't expect to lose any weight at first and certainly not this fast, but it is a pleasant surprise. Okay well that's my experience. Hope this gives a little insight for those of you getting it done. If you have any questions, let me know!

    My Experience

The good thing Melinda is that they put it in while you are sleeping and it doesn't hurt at all being taken out. It didn't HURT having it in, I was just super conscious of it and it was incredibly annoying. Plus, walking with it wasn't easy either.

    My Experience

Definitely the band. It would be kinda silly for me to be on this message board if I had bypass. But anyways, as far as I know, both actually ARE common. I know some don't have catheders and that's to the preference of the surgeon, but the Upper GI is standard. It's where you have to drink the barium liquid. They are checking for leaks and position of the band. I haven't heard of anyone who HASN'T had this done. :/ It's usually protocol before being released.

    Day After Lap Band Surgery....

Wow! You are brave chevy! I was banded the same day as you and was waayy to scared to try any turkey. I did however have half a tablespoon of mashed potatoes with a little bit of gravy and just it liquify in my mouth before swallowing. That was all I was willing to attempt. Glad to know you didn't have any bad side effects from the tukey though!

    Hate to Cook

Hello! Unfortunately, I am one of those people that just despises cooking! I live on my own, so never saw the need of going through the process of cooking a meal. I know that should change (and hopefully it will), but after 4 years of going to school full time as well as working full time, I am just not in the habit. The microwave is a good friend of mine. In the mean time, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for quick, protein heavy, healthy meals? I thought lean cuisines might be a good idea, any others? I have not yet had surgery (only 24 days away!) so am just trying to think ahead. Thanks!!
  10. Hello! I had surgery this past Monday (on the 21st). Supposedly at this point I am able to drink 43 ounces of clear liquids. However, I haven't even been able to hit 10 ounces! I take about 3 sips an hour and it's taking me forever. Iv'e had about 3-4 tablespoons of sf jello throughout the day also. I'm not sure what to do. I feel kinda full. At least, I think it's full. I don't even know what I'm feeling to be honest. I just feel heavy in my stomach. Is this normal? I'm just concerned I'm not getting in enough liquids. Your input is appreciated! Oh and btw, besides some expected soreness at the incision sites, I'm doing pretty good! I haven't felt too much gas (unless THAT'S the heavyness I'm feeling??) and I haven't even had to take any pain medication. No nausea either. I've been trying to walk around the house as much as possible. I've taken a couple of 1 hour naps throuhout the day but I suspect that's more due to boredom than actually being tired.
  11. home from surgery! Not doing too bad!

  12. surgery in the morning! Can't believe the time has come! AAggghh!!

  13. Okay so I know this is a really weird thing to post and ask peoples opinions on, but I'm just wondering if anyone else faced a similar situation. On Monday the 21st, I will be getting my lapband surgery. I'm psyched about it and I'm all prepared. I don't mind not being able to eat on Thanksgiving at all. However, a guy that I'm seeing (he's unaware that I'm getting surgery and I prefer not to tell him), invited me over to his house for Thanksgiving dinner. I REALLY want to go but knowing that I can't eat anything, I don't know how that's going to work. It would be really obvious and weird to him and his family if I don't eat anything. I don't see any way around this. The sad part is that my mom and my sister are both working night shift that night so we are not really doing anything for Thanksgiving. So if I don't go over his house, I will be spending Thanksgiving alone. I have personal reasons for not telling him. I'm not ashamed at all, I've told lots of people, but he's very opinionated and I have a feeling he would not approve and would share his negativity with me. Also, he seems to like me the way I am. Just yesterday, when I told him I was on a diet, he asked me why. I really don't think there is anything I can do. It just makes me sad that I'll be spending the holiday alone because I can't eat. Just figured I'd throw this out there in case anyone else has some insight. Thanks!
  14. surgery on Monday! Starting to feel that nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach...

  15. Tomorrow I am going shopping for everything I will need at the hospital and the first week after. My list so far is the following: Body pillow Chewable Vitamins SF Jello broth Heating pad Gas X strips Water SF Popsicles I keep staring at it wondering if I'm missing anything. I was just wondering what you took with you to the hospital or had the week following surgery that was invaluable to you. There are a couple of obvious things I did not include like drawstring pants and my cell phone. I also am going to buy more of my Protein drink powder. Thanks!!

    A Tiny Thanksgiving Dilemma

Thanks everyone for your responses! I really have no intention of lieing about anything because I'm hoping I'll feel comfortable telling him in the future. Lies would probably just make it worse. I've already told him I'm on a diet so he knows I'm eating differently. I'm not so worried about the scars because our relationship has not progressed to the level where I need to be. I'll etiher just stay home and watch tv, or I'll go over afterwards. After reading all of your responses, I suppose it's not such a big deal. I've just never had to spend a holiday alone before and the thought of it made me a little sad. But it will be okay!!

    A Tiny Thanksgiving Dilemma

It's really not all about the food to me. I just enjoy being with family and friends. I'm not going to lie or anything...that will just make it worse if down the line I decide to tell him. Thanks for your input though! I will probably need the time to rest up anyway.

    A Tiny Thanksgiving Dilemma

Wow...umm...first off, I'm not going to lie to him. Hence the problem I'm having. Second off, it's a new relationship. I have every right to keep it to myself if I want. As I stated, I may feel differently after surgery. I haven't once lied to him so how am I being dishonest? Your response is a tad bit offensive and a lot judgmental.

    A Tiny Thanksgiving Dilemma

I really, really WANT to tell him, but instinct is holding me back. I'm hoping I'll feel different afterwards but who knows. I just was not expecting this hurdle and it stumped me. I think I'll just make an excuse why I can't make dinner and go over after they eat. It's better then nothing! Thanks for your responses and Happy Thanksgiving!

    A Tiny Thanksgiving Dilemma

It sucks, and I wish I could tell him, but I don't feel comfortable doing so. There is just something inside of me that says not to tell him. I don't know why. I don't know how I'll feel about it after the surgery, but I really think it's for the best that he not know. Oh and he's not the type to get upset or hurt over me not telling him. There are other things we don't share with each other. We aren't THAT serious yet.

    November Bandsters!!!

November 21st! Only 4 whole days away!! Yay!!
  23. I was told to go on a 10 day protein shake only diet. I tried it, and I failed. The amount of protein they expected me to get without having anything else was just too much for my body to handle, believe it or not. I was throwing up every day. I'm still on my pre op diet, but now I've switched shakes, drink between 2-3 daily, and if I think I need it, I allow myself some actual food. For instance, yesterday I had a slice of cheese, today, I'm going to have a little bit of grilled chicken. I've lost 8 pounds in 5 days so I think that's decent. Hoping to lose another 5-7 pounds but we'll see! I'm not stressing out about it! Others may not agree, but this was the best route for me. Good luck!
  24. Today is the 4th day of my pre op diet and I've already lost 7 pounds! Yay. However, on the second day, I started to throw up after my third protein shake, yesterday, I started to feel nautious after my 3rd one again. Which, by the way, I'm supposed to have between 5 and 6 a day! So today, I decided to get a different protein drink even though I'm not supposed to. Well, I just had the first one and that made me nautious too! I can't keep going like this! I'd rather not eat anything then have to drink these drinks! I'm allowed to have some non starchy vegetables if desperate, and I'm beginning to think maybe that's all I should have. That and water. What do you think? Any suggestions? I know everyone says the pre op is bad, and yeah, that's all fine and dandy. But I refuse to feel continually sick to my stomach and throwing up. Thanks!
  25. legnarevocrednu

Don't know what to do!! :(

I tried a different one which still made me nautious. I finally bought the carnation instant breakfasts yesterday and I really like them. I'm already down 8 pounds so I'm not going to stress out about it. I couldn't handle the constant feeling of being sick. I figured I'd stick with 2 to 3 carnation breakfasts and if needed, have a serving of non starchy vegetables. Thanks for asking!
