Clips from my Journal:
Two days before Christmas 2009, I broke my leg. When I went to see my regular doctor in January, I had decided to talk to him about bariatric surgery. He was not hesitant. Dr. Ranta said that if I went that route I may be rid of my diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol issues. He thought it was a good choice for me. He had suggested that I consider this a couple of years ago, but I didn’t follow through at that time. I went to Grand Health Partners’ seminar with Becky and Brenda in late January. I think I had already decided to do the surgery, but that day confirmed it for me. My choices are to remain the same and continue to decline in health and increase in medication. I know that mobility will also continue to get worse and I already can’t do many of the things I want to do. It seems like a ‘no-brainer’ to me. I recognize that things will change, but they are going to change anyway, so I might as well accept that and affect them change for the better.

Weight is 215. I am still losing but not very quickly. I had my 1 year follow-up at GHP. I learned that sleeve patients seem to feel better than others and that describes me also. I feel really good and am able to get out and do lots of stuff. I haven’t been doing a lot of formal exercise…about once a week on the treadmill, but I am outdoors doing something much of the time. I walked to Becky’s house through the woods for a haircut the other day. I still fear gaining weight back so I am very careful about meals and rededicate myself often to eating properly and getting plenty of exercise. It seems that both diet and exercise are needed for a healthy weight and neither can do it alone.

Weight is 205. I had my 2 year checkup on May 8. Mostly good comments from Todd, the PA but I am reminded to use the lessons learned from the dieticians. I have actually increased my treadmill activity to 3 times per week and have added weight lifting to improve my upper body strength. I do at least a mile on the treadmill then 15-30 minutes lifting. I feel really good and I am actually still surprised when it’s easy to do things such as bending and walking. Warm weather is here and I am working in the garden and in the woods a lot.
