I have had weight issues ever since I was abbbout 9-10 years old. I grew up in Massachusetts and every summer my grandmother would take me to Mississippi. My grandmother ate ALL the time! I remember riding down south on the Greyhound bus and she would literally force me to eat. As I said she was always eating and everytime she pulled something out to eat she would make me eat something too in fear of me "being hungry". One summer in particular (mid summer) in Mississippi I realized that I could no longer button the pants my mother had sent for me to wear. At 8-9 years old I really did not realize I was in fact getting fat. When I returned home to Massachusetts at the end of the summer my mother was simply blown away at how much weight I had gained. It was from that point on I had issues with my weight.
I look at photos of myself now froom when I was in middle school and I cannot believe how big I was. I absolutely 'hated' going for check ups because I knew my weight was 'always' going to be a topic of discussion. In junior high I trimmed down a little and on through high school my weight went up and down but nonetheless was still overweight. I got married in 1999 and in 2000 gave birth to my son, Timothy and after his birth I was at my heaviest weight of 249lbs. Since then my weight has gone up and down and one day I simply got tired. I began to walk a total of 30 minutes per day splitting up the time of 15 minutes in the morning and another 15 at night. I was able to get my weight down to 210 lbs. I had also made a few changes in my diet. In 2008 I was diagnosed as having Hepattis C. My doctor explained to me that the chemotherapy I was going to be on would make me lose weight...I was diagnosed right after giving birth to my daugther and at that time I was back up to 226 lbs. He also warned me that most Hep C patients almost 'always' gained their weight back after therapy. During therapy I got down to 180 lbs. I had worked out and ate well during therapy. But as the doctor warned I had gained ALL of the weight back.
It was then that I decided to attend one of the Lap-Band surgery seminars that Dr. Duncan lead. I had seen Dr. Duncan on one of the local news channels in Atlanta talking about the Lap Band procedure when I first moved from Massachusetts so it wasn't hard for me to find a doctor. It want long before I got an appointment to meet with him and he said that I was an ideal candidate for the surgery. I just had my surgery on September 28th, 2011 and even with all the reading, support groups and preparation I have done...post surgery is much more difficult than I thought.
