Are Protein Drinks Hydrating?
Katie713 replied to Artichokes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They absolutely count as do all solids that return to liquid form like jello, pudding, the water you add to make hot cereal, popsicles. Anything that starts with a water base. I mix my protein powder with 8 oz water, count the water only beause about 1/4 to 1/2 cup are the solids. -
Some people just make comments because they don't know what to think, or some can be rude, others are overly concerned. Everyone loses at a different rate and there are so many factors! I have been slowly but steadily losing since my pre-op days and of course after surgery but when I really look at myself, I know that I am thinner than I have been in decades, and I am gettting there and I am committed. You will be just fine girlfriend...watch those pounds go!!

Post-Op Care/assistance From Family...
Katie713 replied to MrzSongbird's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt pretty good and was driving in a few days, but watch out for bumps, that jiggling did not feel good. I took my grandson to school a few times, he is 9 and able to get himself ready. Your 10 and 8 year olds may have to help with the younger kids. Just take it as easy as you can, and no heavy housework! It will be hard to not pick up your youngest, but you don't want to tear an internal or external stitch. Sit on the sofa and let the younger ones snuggle up to you. In a few weeks you will feel so much stronger. Take good care of yourself, and if the house gets a little messy, let it be...there will be time to bring it up to speed. The main thing is not to compromise your recovery. -
I had my first drink about two months out with no issues. I could only have one though, it felt like I had two. Now on occasion I will have a cocktail (not a sweet one) but because it makes my weight loss stall, I don't do it often, maybe at a party.

You should take in between 65-80 grams of protein per day. During clear fluids, pick up some Isopure at the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. It's 40 grams of protein per 20 oz bottle and it's a clear fluid - they have different flavors. I liked the grape ice. The orange flavor was ok too. This counts as fluid as well.

This is real life. Stuff happens and on occasion we will have our weak moments. Don't beat yourself up over it. Sorry to hear about your loss.. just keep up all the good work, you're doing fantastic.

Some of them have a little caffeine, but way less than a cup of coffee. I never had any problem with them. I love the sweet tea MIO drops!!

West La Kaiser Dr Zelada
Katie713 replied to newgrandmother's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Dr Zelada did my surgery at West LA on 4/6/12...he is a fantastic doctor and he did beautiful work. My scars are small and there were no drains or anything, he closed me up tight. I had hardly any pain and I have been feeling wonderful since the surgery! He has a sweet disposition and he is not bad to look at either  -
Gosh, I love crackers, but I'm not eating them right now because I am limiting my carbs and it has helped me continue losing. I had a few long stalls already....I love reduced fat wheat thins and reduced fat triscuit with Laughing Cow cheese spread or tuna salad.... I will probably return to them when I am closer to goal...but for now I think I am better off without them!

Is This Normal?
Katie713 replied to wannabeeskinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can ask for anti-nausea medication to get you through this. Just keep trying to sip, sip, sip. Warm broth was very comforting to me in the beginning, and chai tea. Try using different temperatures to see what goes down easier. -
Unfortunately we cannot change the behavior of others. She is probably very concerned and maybe even miffed that you "did this to yourself". I suggest you find a way in your own head to let these comments pass right by you without being reactive. It's sometimes the same thing we have to do with most negative comments people make regarding our choices. You've done something very proactive for your life. Be proud of that, and over time as you heal, you will be able to resume normal eating in small but healthy portions. Good luck on your journey!!

How Did A Bull Dog Get Between My Legs?
Katie713 commented on tmorgan813's blog entry in A funny thing happend while I was loosing weight
Yep...I noticed the same thing with my thighs! I was trying on my practically brand new bathing suit that I've had for a year because I want to start swimming - and it was huge on me (3X) which was good (but a waste of money) but I really had to take a second look at my thighs...my legs have gotten so much thinner, but there's the wobbley part at the top of the thigh to deal with. I ordered a new swimsuit on-line in a size 18, yeah its a swimdress but very cute - and I ordered the boy shorts to pull up under the swimdress, and they are tight enough to cover the tops of my thighs...I think I can actually go out in public in a swimsuit this year. Eventually, I will probably have plastic surgery though....I can't imagine that I will feel totally comfortable with a lot of loose skin!! I am hitting the gym now and also wearing a compression garment which helps! Good luck...I like your sense of humor! Hell if we can't laugh at ourselves, then what??? -
I was wondering why you have the Protein at 5 grams. 3 oz of talapia contains 22 grams of protein, 1 oz of shrimp has about 6 grams and the same for the crab according to myfitnesspal. I eat seafood all of the time and it is such a great protein. Knowing this makes this recipe even better...nearly 34 grams of protein, or 17 if you can only eat half a portion. It sounds delicious!!!

Gross Incision :( :( :(
Katie713 replied to missmachine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What I have heard is that if it has green/yellow oozing, the color signifies infection. Have this checked out. -
I went to my favorite sushi place last week and checked the menu for something without rice and on the menu Kappa Mark...a cucumber roll with either a combo of raw fish or spicy tuna, no rice or nori. It was fantastic!

Am I The Slowest Loser Ever?
Katie713 replied to NoExcuses's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear you, I'm also a slow loser, but I guess I'm resigned to the fact that I'm in for the long haul and it is coming off very slowly, but I am getting there. Are you taking measurements? You may be losing inches, building muscle and losing fat. I shake up my diet and keep trying different combinations to break my stalls. It's certainly worth a try... I know it's frustrating...oh boy do I....but we will do this thing...just hang in there and let time work it's magic. I had my surgery 4/6/12 by the way. -
As for the Water intake - just have something flavored - it still counts as water. It needs to be sugar free...since I like tea I drink alot of varieties of tea, like MIO sweet tea water flavor enhancer (MIO has a variety of flavors) or Arizona Diet green tea, crystal light, etc. As far as Protein, alot of people enjoy the ready to drink shakes "Premier Protein" sold at costco and Sams club, it's sold in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. If you prefer the thinner fruity Protein drinks, try nectar products sold at the Vitamin Shoppe, GNC and on amazon. I like Pure Protein Powder in Frosty chocolate. I mix one scoop with water and put it in the freezer for awhile. It doesn't tast bad at all, and believe me some protein powders taste awful. Good luck!!

Food Not Interesting Anymore
Katie713 replied to twistedkitten25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hear you. Used to be that savoring a good meal brought with it that good feeling of satiety and getting those juices flowing would prompt the endorphins and the feeling after a delicious meal. I believe now, that even though we can take our time eating, we aren't eating enough to get the endorphins really going and the pleasure factor is minimized. Eating several courses is pretty much off the table now too...I went to Hokkaido (seafood buffet) to Celebrate my granddaughters graduation. I kind of dreaded the fact that I might not be able to enjoy it very much, getting full so fast, but I managed to prolonge the meal, having a serving of maybe 8 small clams, which looked like more on my plate with a little drawn butter and lemon....involving myself in the conversation, and then going to the teppan grill, where they had 2 oz cuts of steak which I had them grill up with bean sprouts, a little onion and mushroom. I was able to enjoy it as the beef was super tender and the soy sauce just enough to keep everything moist and flavorful. Most other foods don't taste that great to me anymore, and I am trying to think of ways to thrill my pallete without eating too much, or eating too many calories. For now it is a matter of testing things out and seeing what I can tolerate. I never thought I would have to "tolerate" meals...it's so weird. I do crave a nice serving of lobster and/or scallops...perhaps for my birthday next month..... -
It sounds like something is still wrong. I've heard some gastric bypass patients experience sweating as part of dumping syndrome, but our stomachs are intact from the esophagus to the pylorus, just smaller. I had sugery 4/6 with no problems, and have never broken into a sweat from eating. Time for a second opinion, carefully documenting your previous care and moving forward dilegently monitoring your health. You deserved better care, now is the time to fight for yourself.

Excited Newbie - Thank You!
Katie713 replied to cantwaittolose's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck to all of you...I'm 9 weeks out and my surgery went well. I was in a 3 month pre-op program with Kaiser then dieted 3 more months while waiting for surgery in April (my choice to delay it due to commitments) I am 56 and also a single mom of 3 young adult children. I am doing well and about half way through this journey...last summer a high of almost 280 and now I am 10 pound away from ONEDERLAND, (under the 200 lb mark) I feel great and still learning what works best for my little tummy, just started working out at the gym, before that lots of walking and using stretch bands. Think positive, follow protein and liquid requirements and take your vitamins and you should to just fine. Sure the liquid diet is hard, but it goes by fast...in a few weeks you'll be trying out new things and modify your old favorites. -
Hello Today Was My First Visit After Surgery!
Katie713 replied to Thegoddesszili's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
After a few weeks I went back to regular coffee and can drink it no problem. Later you can also try coffee flavored protein drinks, I know Click has a line and also Big Train, you can find both on line. -
Post-Op Cravings And Discouraged!
Katie713 replied to melissamae99's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Soft foods...cream of wheat, malt-o-meal, grits, oatmeal, Creamy soups help, and mashed potatoes with canned chicken mixed into gravy, 1% cottage cheese with canned pears or peaches, refried beans with melted cheese, pudding, yogurt. Also, which ever protein drink that tastes good to you...I like the Pure Protein drink in frosty chocolate. I'm 9 weeks out and I can eat solids...but tiny servings, you will feel that restriction with solids and know when to stop fairly soon. Good Luck and keep on sipping liquids, I love iced tea and Mio drops in water. -
Thank you for your post. I know that this is my journey, and at times the worst thing to do is compare your own weight loss to someone elses, but yes, at times I do get discouraged that I am such a slow loser....but like you, when I really think about it and look at myself now as opposed to last summer, I am proud of myself, and I do feel better, and I have not given up - I am staying the course. My old clothes no longer fit, and I can slide right into a booth in a restaurant, I can see my slimmer face and neck, where before, I did not look like myself. I am halfway to my goal - and losing slowly, sometimes only a pound here and there, is how my body loses weight. I refuse to do some crazy starvation diet - I am trying to get healthy here, and I am getting healthier, everyday!
