  1. Gawd - Blue Bell is my weakness, for sure. And yes, you're right. Eating disorders (compulsive overeating/anorexia/bulimia) is often a result of growing up in dysfunctional families. There are many studies. However, blame does little to break the chain. Once we're adults, it's up to us to make a difference and to be responsible for our own behavior. Exploring the dysfunction in my family did help me to understand the dynamics of how it all came about. How to change it is the real challenge.
  2. Walking really is the thing that helps the most. I know it's rough that first few times, but once you are upright and walking it definitely makes the healing go faster. Make sure you keep the liquids going in too! So glad everything went well and you're home! Please keep us posted as to how you're progressing.

    I'm Coming to Texas!

Strange things are happening with this board. I always click 'view new posts' to see who's posted where, but it's obviously not always bringing up ALL the new posts. Oh well... I'm up for anything. Which day is your dr's meeting, Rica?
  5. great answers, marie and sue. the only thing i can really think of is: if you are having your surgery out of state, please, please, please make sure you have local follow up BEFORE you go out of state/country for surgery. unless you are absolutely prepared to pay the expenses and take the time necessary to get to an out of state doc you must have local care. in the event of any band problems - slippage, port replacement, erosion - anything. you could find yourself in an emergency situation with no local care. that concerns me everytime i hear of people going away from their homes to have surgery. just my 2 cents..

Lisa is in the funny farm...

((((((((((((((delarla))))))))))))) Please be careful self-medicating. I totally understand your angst. Boy! How I remember those times of extreme emotions when I was married. I don't know what to say, except I totally understand. But, your health has got to come first! Please take care of you..

Great photos, Alex!! It's always nice to see how much younger we all look without those additional pounds. Thanks for posting them!

Does that make you feel strange? I ask because my older brother (whom I love and admire very much) calls me Skinny when he sees me now. It feels strange in a way. He's called me 'dumplin' for so long. lol. Darn, it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Poor thing, he has really struggled with his weight this past few years too. He has a lethal ice cream addiction (it runs in the family, btw). But, I think now that he's suffered so much with his weight too that he really calls me Skinny to make me feel good. He's one of those guys who gives everyone a nickname and I never really liked Dumplin.. lol, but now I find it rather bittersweet that he would call me something else. Ack.. I've got to find something else to do. Seems like it's gonna be one of those teary days.. .

    Beautiful Wonderful Toast!

I don't do bread much either, which is good. A year without bread is bound to show up somewhere, right? although, IF I do really want to at least taste it, sometimes just taking a pinch of it really does make me feel better about not having it. Often we go out to eat at places where bread is served before the meal, so I'll just take some and pinch off of it while the others gorge themselves in preparation for the entre.

Just a thought...from the teachers lounge

((((((((((Rica))))))))))) It does suck. Some people just cannot be happy without putting other down. I know there are people watching me too, just waiting for me to gain back a few pounds so they can tell me 'I told you so.' Don't let it get you down!

Need a Scope - Possible Band Erosion

Well, I sure hope the news is good. How long have you had your band? Did you ever say if you actually have restriction?

    Hi I'm New..

Sounds like she had you confused with a gastric bypass??? Anyway, there have been many large BMI Lapband patients. As with any surgery, of course not smoking at least for a duration is better to prepare your lungs for surgery and recuperation. This is a given and most smokers know it. I used to be one. I can promise you it will be easier than having to hack up all that stuff afterwards. However, I'm sure you wouldn't be the first who didn't heed that warning. lol. If this is something you think you want. Don't let anyone talk you out of it. Keep researching and asking questions.
  16. Rogers, Texas. Boy, does that bring back some memories. I went to high school in Academy and Temple. Welcome!

    Tennessee?

I don't know of anyone in TN, sorry. However, I would seriously encourage you to speak to your mexican Dr about helping you with follow-up care in the states. This is really one of those issues that is better handled beforehand due to the vast majority of banding docs not seeing any patients other than those they banded themselves. You might do a search in Yahoo Groups to see if there is a message board for Tennesee, specifically. I really wish you luck in securing a local doc!!

    "Old Timers"???

Cool site. I don't think I've ever seen that particular one. I know several of the FDA Trial folks are on Yahoo Groups - Smartbandsters, then there are some on www.spotlighthealth.com , then there are those who aren't posting anymore because they're out living their new lives.

    Help! Swallowed gum!!!

She's really a very funny lady. lol. With a nurse's/hospital sense of humor. Since I work in that arena, I usually 'get it'. something smooth and slippery might help facilitate it's moving on down. got any frozen yogurt handy?
  22. Being 4 days out from surgery. I would think that you are still on liquids? Right? Otherwise, while I'm doing liquids, I try to break my day up some, but it feels as if I have something going IN constantly. I first get a Protein shake (atkins or EAS ready to drink) later in the morning I'm having either tapioca or sugar free Jello for some sort of substance. I'm drinking Crystal Light in between - or Water. Around noon I may have another jello, tapioca or popsicle. Later in the day around dinnertime I'm having a Campbell's Soup-at-Hand for some more substance. Towards the evening, I mix a cup of nectar Protein Drink for a bit more protein. I'll have a yogurt or another popsicle or both. If I still feel hollow, I'll grab another jello, etc. All along, drinking water or Crystal Light in between, so it sorta feels like I'm pouring something down consistently. I've tracked it in www.fitday.com and it still doesn't exceed 800 calories a day. I've also had some frozen yogurt or ice cream in the evenings also. I'll trade some of this off this coming week for something more substantial like mashed potatoes or thinned refried Beans w some cheese sprinkled on, maybe some thin oatmeal in the morning. Hope this helps!

    Help! Swallowed gum!!!

Jessie says it will move on down the digestive tract or it will come up. She rarely has to unfill someone because something is stuck! Then.. she jokes and I quote'. "jessie ahroni: [just joking] Tell her to drink a quarter cup of K-Y [not really] LOL .. not to worry. I think you'll be okay. No more gum! lol. :laugh
