How Much Are You Eating At One Year After Surgery?
spartymsu replied to KaitlynnHughes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow..what a great question....8 1/2 months out for me....average day... Breakfast - Muscle Milk strawberry Creme smoothie with 8 large frozen strawberries, 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder with crushed ice and blended...about 20 oz.. lunch - 6 to 8 slices Oscar Meyer Shaved Turkey alone or rolled on small fajita with lettuce, tomatoe, sugar free sweet pickle chips, salsa and cheese - 1 or 2 dinner - 1 large Boneless, skinless chicken Breast with vegetable abd salad Snacks - cheese sticks, Yoplait Key Lime Greek Yogurt cup (favorite snack), Pure Protein Peanut Butter Protein Bar, baby carrots, apples, oranges and bananas. All day Crystal Light Lemonade and Orange mixed....... I am no wear near as scientific as others who have posted...I am winging it a lot now and the stomach controls the portions for me and it is working. My Doctor said I should not be on a "diet" just eat a well rounded diet of pretty much anything I wanted in normal portions that the new stomach assists in controling now.... -

What's Unique About Being A 50S Sleever?
spartymsu replied to EileenFrances's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Like you said Eileen I too had no real interest in changing my outward appearance at this point of my life. I had my reasons though...... We decided at age 51 to try to have a child with the help of all of the new medical technologies avavilable now. My wife said if it works I could retire as she knew I had always wanted to have kids and had long ago tired of my job. Well, it worked and she gave birth to twins in Jan 2009. I retired and took care of the kids, 24/7, diapers, feedings, cooking, cleaning etc....330 pounds and my weak knees were giving out. High BP, High Chol and became diabetic. March 2011 Doc suggested Bariatric Surgery and Sept 2011 it was done. 120 ponds lost and I have never felt better and have all of the energy and wherewithall to stay one step ahead of the kids and manage everything at home. It has allowed me to have the best of both worlds, the energ & strength I had in my mid 30'5 along with the financial independence, maturity and patience I now possess as a 54 year old man. The change in apperance is secondary but that too is great and I guess I am like anybody else love hearing that you look good. I think us 50+ sleevers are unique in that we care far much more about health then looks whether we are single married or otherwtse! My situation is very unique but I can't believe everything has worked out so well. By the way, I am no longer considered Diabetic and my HBP and High Chol are under control. My knees are so much better too, but still require daily exercise for strengthening which obviously also helps the weight loss and overall mental health! -
You look great! Well done...!

How Often Do You Record Measurements?
spartymsu replied to Musharooni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Weekly for a while and once I saw that the VSG was going to work I went with watching how I fit in my clothes. I would then weigh every month. There just was too much up and down and no progress days that would be a downer when I was weighing too often. You will need all of the positive reinforcement you can get and nothing beats watching your sizes shrink in your clothes! Good Luck! -
Worried About The Protein Shakes - What If I Can't Do It?
spartymsu replied to Strangefruit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a Muscle Milk fan too. Strawberry Creme version of MM is fantastic. Just buckle down and do it. It prepares you for after surgery and beyond. You will have time to try different brands. I lost 30 pounds in 3 weeks befor the surgery, believe it or not. I actually lost more in the 3 weeks before surgery then the 3 weeks after...it was well worth it and gets you off on a great start for after the surgery...Good Luck! -
Sounds great! After 8 months since surgery greek yogurt is still my favorite food but miss my ice cream sooo much. Freezing it sounds like a winner...Thanks!

Mental Health Eval
spartymsu replied to Gettinhealthy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My evaluation was about 3 hours and pretty interesting. I had the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) test which I had never done before, about 300 questions on a computer that went from strange to weird. If you have something of the like just be honest with your answers. Part of the questioning is to see if you are being deceptive. Also had a IQ test as well as a sit down with a psychiatrist. The main thing they are looking for is whether you will be able to follow all of the instructions and procedures that are required to follow for your lifetime after the surgery. They do not want to provide the surgery to someone who can not take the right meds, or stay on the protein diet etc...I actually kinda enjoyed it. I was a Psych major in college and never had the MMPI or never had an IQ test before. Don't sweat i just have fun. It will be fine! -
Just keep plugging away and do the best you can and not give up. I felt the same way and over time it gets easier and foods taste better. I agree that the priority has to be getting your protein in, so start all meals when possible with protein. You can only do what you can do so just remember it will get better and easier over time.

Best of luck to you both. I am a father of 3 year old twins and am the stay at home parent and caregiver. My life has been transformed in my ability to not only care for the twins but enjoy every day with great energy and health. You stay with the process and you too can be transformed. By the way , I am 54 years old and have the health and energy now I had 25 years ago...

The Hardest Diet I Never Went On
spartymsu replied to FluffyBleu76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Very well said...Good Luck to you! -
Thanks kyllfalcon..you are so kind! I know you kid but really being a retired father of twin newborns in your 50;s is far from the difficult task that most think. Maturity, reasonably financial independence, well traveled and having patience goes for the most part with being in your 50's. Combine that with being HEALTHY now and like magic you are perfectly prepared for parenthood. I wouldn't trade my life now for anyone on earth, really. Now, being the primary caregiver and all that goes with that is a LOT of work but compared to the stress and strains of the "outside" work world combined with the rewards (non-monetary of course) it is truely a blessing and a gift from God! People need to take a 2nd look at parenthood in later life, especially if for whatever reasons you never had children before then. p.s. I have a 33 year old son too!

WOW! I am tired too, just from reading your post I too went 3 months without working out but not so much from being as busy as you just from not feeling good. My only suggestion would be the type of exercise for you to get. Don't necessarily view "working out" as going to the gym. Incorpoate exercise throughout your day doing things you like to do. Also the workout doesn't have to be a vigorous one, just try walking more for instance. I work out 3-4 x's per week and most of my work out is for my weak knees. Carrying around all this weight broke them down so now I have to repair the damage so I can be upright the rest of my life. I use a recumbant bike for 30 minutes, weights for my upper body for 15 minutes and knee exercises on my bed for 15 minutes. Even though I focus on my knees my whole body gets a work out and mentally it gets you in a better frame of mind to stay true to your eating goals and weight loss. Good luck to you and congrats on the 54 pound loss in 3 months ...Well done!

I was 51 when my wife gave birth to twins, she was 51 too. Had the VSG surgery at age 54 (8 months ago). The kids were 2 at point of my surgery. I had the surgery to be around for them. I am stay at home dad and just could not keep up with everything. It's amazing the transformation in energy and ability to handle my life now. The kids didn't really notice the gradual changes they just know Daddy is a lot more fun now.....This VSG surgery is the single most important event of my life!

There Are No Stupid Questions... Except This One
spartymsu replied to crossedpaws's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I sleep on stomach sometimes too. It is definitely an individual thing as far as how long before you can do it again. It took about 3 weeks for me with no pain. -
Yes you do get cold! It was a gradual thing with me ...the more I lost the colder I got. I sleep with shirt, sweatpants and socks...always cold.....sorry wifey No complaints here though...Nobody said it would be perfect surgery for us in every way!

From the man's point of view I am doing great too! Down 112 pounds but still 27 pounds from "normal" BMI. Loose skin is issue and increased appetite...It's amazing though to eat in the quantities of a normal person after all of these years. I feel sometimes like I am cheating when I eat a "bad" food but now eat it in the right portion and do not gain the weight. The concept of being able to eat some ice cream without eating the entre box or potatoe chips without eating the entiore bag still amazes me... I am too embarassed to go without a shirt to the beach this summer...I will be one of "those guys" that wears a t-shirt with my trunks...maybe some day surgery will help me!
