Be prepared to jump through a few hoops with Kaiser... They require a few classes and such to better prepare YOU. That way YOU aren't asking people on this board questions that should be answered already by your surgeon or aftercare staff...

This is the information Binder they give us in class at Kaiser. This will give you some idea of what they teach before surgery. Be aware that all Kaiser Hospitals are different and have different processes... This Binder is from My facility. http://www.permanent...r/pdf/39806.pdf

I am with Kaiser in California. They do WLS (RNY,Sleeve and Band) on patients with a BMI of 40 or greater with special circumstances like comorbid conditions like diabetes or knee and/or hip problems / arthritis , or in Patients with a BMI of 50 or more with no comorbid conditions.

I've made up my mind
Driver Deb replied to KimtripleA3's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kim, Are you a Kaiser patient by any chance? Your pre op requirements sound similar to mine. Welcome to the journey !!! -
You are lucky... I would love a pre op diet of clear liquids for 2 days. My pre op diet is lose 10% of my body weight. That's on a 1200 calorie diet. I have 29 pounds to lose before surgery.

Sleeve around your stomach ?
Driver Deb replied to wanttobeslim12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Check out Youtube to watch a VSG operation. There are some good ones posted and they are informative.... -
Just got the okay from Kaiser to have WLS. They want to do the RNY bypass instead of the sleeve because of the success rate with keeping the weight off long term. They also said that because my weakness is sugar, it would be better at keeping me on track... I'm guessing because of the dumping that people experience after eating sugary foods. I was hoping not to mess with my intestines and keep my plumbing intact, but I also don't want to have the sleeve and end up having to get that revised into the RNY because it isn't working for me long term. Has anyone else here had their DR. tell them something like this?? Kaiser said they only do sleeves on a few select patients.

Do you know any one who quit the bariatrics program and then returned after a long time? I was wondering if when you came back, did you get a new pre op weight goal or did they make you keep the same goal? I was gone for 4 years and gained 40 pounds. They wouldn't expect me to lose all that weight pre op would they?

How much weight did you lose pre op? Was it a specific required amount ? How long were you on your pre op diet and what did it consist of ???

I was supportive and helpful and she didn't like the answers I had for her, just like she didn't like the requirements that Kaiser had for her to get surgery through them. I will not apologize for being truthful, no matter how rude you think I was, that's your problem. -

If you would have "jumped through a few hoops" you would be better informed and you would have all the aftercare you you needed. You would have a food plan to follow, support groups to attend, and a case nurse at your beck and call if problems arose. -

It's not personal, but you are right, I have attitude because you chose to take a shortcut to get what you wanted and now you are complaining because that shortcut is causing you problems and now you EXPECT Kaiser to clean up some else's mess... Did you even consult with Kaiser about getting surgery elsewhere and if you did, would they give you aftercare? I DID. Why isn't YOUR surgeon giving you the proper aftercare??? -

wow... "if they won't cover this surgery what good are they?" You were the one who chose to not "jump through Kaisers hoops" now you want them to give you aftercare on a surgery they did not perform. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT... -

I am with Kaiser too. I am jumping through all their hoops because of this exact reason !! My pcp warned me... "Do not go out of house for surgery because Kaiser will not cover any aftercare". You are still healing, so take it easy and rest. Stop trying to make everything happen at such a fast pace. Stay on full liquids for a couple weeks, then creamed Soups for a couple weeks and then pureed soft foods for a couple of weeks. Take gradual baby steps and give yourself time to heal. Remember, you had a lot of water weight after surgery, so you weighed more when you came out than when you went in... give yourself a break. you did not gain this weight over night and you will not lose it over night.
