    Denied over 12 pounds!

I was denied because I didn't make it down to a certain weight. For me the denial was over 9 lbs, so I feel your pain! I had gained almost 30 before that and had gotten almost all of that off! But it wasn't good enough, I have to make it to 335. Grrrrr! My company doesn't base it on too-high BMI, they say you have to lose 5% of your excess. Which I understand, but again, GRRRRRR!!!! So I'm with you, I'm drinking SF Low Carb and EAS AdvantEdge Low Carb (that one is disgusting, BTW!, the SF is much better!!!!) and having nothing but salad veggies and 1/2 cup of Cottage cheese a day. I have 6 1/2 lbs to lose by April 25th. I'm crossing my fingers!

    Dr. Pleatman

check out the patient reviews of him on obesityhelp.com: http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/bariatric+surgeon+reviews+Mark+Pleatman+hsj.html?page=2 I've heard he is highly regarded as a band surgeon, and probably more importantly, as a laparoscopic surgeon. He has developed one of the tools used in laparascopic surgery.
  11. Start seeing the dietician now. Your PCP can set that up, and considering your daughter is overweight, that could be covered. Have the PCP not say anything about the desire for surgery later. Do everything you can to get whatever requirements you have, or could potentially have, out of the way. Good luck!

Prior verticle C-Sections & lap band

Your uterus is nowhere near your stomach. I cannot imagine even a vertical cut causing them to deny you.
  13. Not sure what your experience has been, but when's the last time you heard a building alarm of a car alarm going off and seen a bunch of people running over to see what is wrong? The population by and large ignores things like alarms. I will look over if I hear an alarm going off, but if I don't see anything suspicious I dno't go running to see what the story is.
  14. No one brought it up yet. I never said I would object to a database similar to the one you described. But the reasons why someone should be on such a database should be carefully looked at. One cannot say that anyone on anti-depressants can't buy a gun (as some in the media have loosely said), because that would potentially be 60% of the population (I have no idea that stats, I'm pulling that number from my butt, or am basing it on the number of people around me that say they take them). Antidepressants are prescribed very frequently these days. I think that is a good thing. If someone needs them, it is wonderful there is not a stigma around getting them. It does seem that someone who has a restraining order against them, or who has been reported for violent behavior should be more fully investigated before being given a purchase permit for a handgun. But remember that this will take manpower, and money. There will have to be more people added to the ATF (or whatever agency will be responsible for the investigating). I don't have a problem with that, I think it would be beneficial in many ways. On another note, the class of antidepressants he was on have been proven to have relationship to violent behavior and also suicidal tendencies. Eric Harris, one of the Columbine shooters, was on these and had escalations in his dosages in the months up to that attack. I wish we could say definitively that everyone who wrote disturbing materials and plays like this man did was going to be a killer, that way we could know who was going to commit awful crimes before they happen. But you can't go by this or Stephen King and Dean Koontz would be institutionalized for the rest of their lives. There is no easy answer, I wish there was.
  15. Here's a snippet about the worst act of mass murder in a school in US history, and it WASN'T commited with guns: The Bath School disaster is the name given to three bombings in Bath Township, Michigan, USA, on May 18, 1927, which killed 45 people and injured 58. Most of the victims were children in second to sixth grades attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest act of mass murder in a school in U.S. history. The perpetrator was school board member Andrew Kehoe, who was upset by a property tax that had been levied to fund the construction of the school building. He blamed the additional tax for financial hardships which led to foreclosure proceedings against his farm. These events apparently provoked Kehoe to plan his attack. On the morning of May 18, Kehoe first killed his wife and then set his farm buildings on fire. As fire fighters arrived at the farm, an explosion devastated the north wing of the school building, killing many of the people inside. Kehoe used a detonator to ignite dynamite and hundreds of pounds of pyrotol which he had secretly planted inside the school over the course of many months. As rescuers started gathering at the school, Kehoe drove up, stopped, and detonated a bomb inside his shrapnel-filled vehicle, killing himself and the school superintendent, and killing and injuring several others. During the rescue efforts, searchers discovered an additional 500 pounds (230 kg) of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol planted throughout the basement of the school's south wing.
  16. Oh for GOSH GOODNESS SAKES!!!! It is NOT about the GUNS!!!!!! Sheesh!!!! It is about a twisted, mentally ill individual who wanted for some reason that we can never understand to die, and on the way to take many people with him. Remember Jim Jones? 909 people died there, and that was kool-aid. Though that was a mass suicide, it would be just as easy for this person to have put some poison in the Powerade dispenser in the cafeteria. If someone wants to kill a large group of people as this sicko obviously did, they can very easily make a nice little bomb and bring it to class and detonate it. Remember the pipe bombs bombs in the backpack at the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996? Eric Robert Rudolph's bombs were made of dynamite surrounded by nails which acted as shrapnel. He made four attacks across the Southern US, using the same bombs. He killed three people and injured 150 in those attacks. No guns involved, and anyone can find the instructions for how to make bombs on our beloved internet.
  17. Never mind, I found it!
  18. Yep, I do. I suggested I'd be happy to pay for a premium membership to not have the ads on my page. This site is very pricey to run (well, they all are, especially those with thousands of members, and that allow pics, bandwidth costs money) so I understand the need for the ads. I really do, I'd just like to be able to pay something to support the site and not have to see the ads. There was a thread here a few minutes ago about the problems, but now it's gone!
  19. Nope, you're not alone. Earlier the only way I could view a thread was by clicking on it in my email box, now that isn't working. And when I post this, I get a page not found error, too.
  20. I agree that it would have been nice if there was an announcement made that changes were going to happen. It also would be nice to have an announcement in larger letters across the top of the home page that changes have been made and to PM Alex (I couldn't figure out who to email about this earlier today because there isn't anywhere here that says who the webmaster or admin is, so if you don't know-and I didn't-who to contact, you are in a pickle) about problems. The teal is harder on my eyes that the blue was, but perhaps it will get easier as I get used to it. I completely understand the cost of running websites, especially those that allow photo posting, DH owns a few. It gets quite pricey, bandwidth is not free. So I realize the need to place ads on the site now. That having been said, I'd be happy to pay something to be a "premium" or "gold" or "diamond" or "platinum" or "enhanced" (whatever name you'd like to call it) member to not have the ads show on my page and perhaps to be able to chose what color my forums show up in.
  21. If it is an exclusion for folks under 25, you will have a very tough, if not impossible time. try www.obesitylaw.com He does not work for the manufacturer, I am not sure who that would be, but Walter Lindstrom is a reputable lawyer who for a few hunderd dollars will write a good letter for you and help guide you through the process.
  22. I'm sorry I missed this post! I've been denied because I didn't lose the 5% of my excess weight the insurance company required. Loooong story, it wasn't my fault, my MD sent a letter saying it wasn't, it didn't matter. They still denied me. So, I'm trying again a the end of the month. I'm losing by trying to eat like a bandster now, so it won't be such a shock post-op. I don't have the portion control, of course, but I've changed the rest of how I eat. I use baby spoons and forks for small bites, I chew, chew, chew. I try not to drink with meals (that's the hardest), and I'm eating protein first, veggies second and complex carbs/fruits last. I have given up all refined sugar and enriched flour. I've almost given up all artificial sweeteners (they cause me to crave carbs). I'm logging every bite of food and every bit of exercise on fitday.com So far, so good. But I'm slowing. So I'm mixing up how many calories I'm eating, and adding five minutes a day of exercise. I will start a liquid diet tomorrow for the week before my next weigh in in hopes of losing the last few pounds. I have to be 335 by the 25th of April. Congrats on your banding and no need for the "tongs!" I've got my handy dandy locking tongs from Target at the ready, whenever I get approved. If I don't need them, then I'll just have another pair for the grill!

anyone need a Doctor in Michigan?

I am going to the Hurley guys. I was very impressed with their director, Dr. Obeid and the surgeon I saw for consult, Dr. Wagner. One of the other members here, BooBooKitty sees Dr. Farhan in that group and likes him as well. If your insurance covers it, or if money is not an issue, have you considered Port Huron? Those guys are fantastic! Dr. Pleatman has some pretty pricey hidden fees, too. ($1500) Here's a link to the obesityhelp.com Michigan Surgeon page: http://obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/bariatric+surgeons+in+michigan.html
