CALL YOUR SURGEON! We CANNOT and most of us WILL NOT tell you it is okay to go against your prescribed post-op diet. I understand it is TOUGH, it really does SUCK. I've been there, and I'm sorry to say it gets harder. But you CAN do it. Here's a post I made in another thread about eating too early. Sorry, it's a bit TOUGH LOVE: Quote: Originally Posted by Susan70 I was banded on 8/10/07.I will be honest. I did not follow the instructionst to the T. I was supposed to be on Clear liquids for 2 wks and then soft mashed foods for 2 wks. I did eat Soups like mushroom and tomato soups the first 2 weeeks, By the 3 week I was on solid but soft foods.. I do not encourage doing what I did though I dont think I have had any problems.HOWEVER I did not eat solids until at least 2 wks later... Now for you is way too soon. Eat a hearty cream Soup before you think about solids Susan's post is a good example of what most people say:"I didn't have any problems" or "It went down fine" or "I didn't have any pain" or "I chewed really well." Now while I am glad that Susan said she did not start solids until she was supposed to, and likely she won't have a problem from the soups, one NEVER knows. Usually the problems aren't now. The problems creep up later down the line generally after a fill. The band needs to get scar tissue formed around it to hold it in place on the back of the stomach (it's stitched on the front) ans it also gets itself "seated" into a groove it makes in the fat pad on your stomach's surface. If it either doesn't get to make that little groove in the right spot, or it if gets shifted around a lot while the stomach is churning trying to process the more solid food you've eaten (before you were supposed to), then the groove won't form right and down the road you may have a slip. I emphasize MAY, not WILL. Think about it people, did you get fat in six weeks? NO! So why can't you stick to a freaking plan for four or six or eight tiny weeks out of our whole miserable lives in an attempt to make our lives better? Really! I know, the cop out response is "Well, if I could follow a diet I wouldn't be fat." Gimme a break. It's not a diet in the post-op phase, it's an eating plan to give you the best possible chance you can get with the tool you have just either sold your soul to the insurance company for, or that you have just paid for with blood, sweat and tears (or taken a loan on your home, any number of ways). And remember this is not MAGIC, it is a tool, and that tool needs to be taken care of like any other tool. you wouldn't leave an $8500 saw out in the rain, would you? You'd protect it. So protect your investment in your weight loss tool. It's not magical, it does require work on our part to make choices in what to eat and what not to eat. I also urge you to call your surgeon before you start testing your band.

Julie, I have asked repeatedly that you stop writing what people can do with their diets., I'm asking again. You don't know what their diet should be, you are NOT their surgeon and neither am I. My doc would not have had me on mushies in two weeks, and I could NOT have cream Soups just because I was "starving" and wanted them. It is irresponsible to continue to post that people can have cream soups whenever they want and to say that they "should be moving to mushies within two weeks." Maybe their surgeon has them on them in three days, maybe it is a month, unless they say, we shouldn't tell them what is okay.

Hi Marnie, I don't recall ever being unhappy with the band. I think almost all of us go through a period where we ask ourselves what the heck we did to ourselves. We second guess ourselves and ask why we did it, could we have lost it on our own, etc. I know that the band was an important tool to have installed. I'm glad I have it. Very glad.

Hello Elizabeth, I've been in medicine for about 14 years now and was saying I had always used mL and cc interchangeably, didn't recall it being from a JCAHO (I'm assuming that's who you mean) edict but perhaps that's what it was. Perhaps it is like soda or pop or coke, it may also be regional or where you practice or were taught. Isn't it interesting how things are different in different institutions?

Major Hairloss..Any suggestions?
faithmd replied to sweet_thang0792's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Heya Kat, Well, I can't speal for all women on the pill, but I have been on it since I was 18 (a loooong time) and stopped for the required month before and month after surgery (my doc required it). So I've been on the pill all through my initial weight loss and it hasn't helped me. I take 1/35/28, so I am not on a low dose pill. -
Amyc, you had the band placed to lose 44 lbs? Wow! Goodonya girl, you are OVER a third of the way to your goal! Celebrate that accomplishment!

faithmd replied to Bloo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hope all is well, Bloo. Interesting, I had a very dear friend/love in college who was from Syria. His nickname in his frat was Bloo. I even made him a sweatshirt with the greek letters on it and embroidered his nickname on it. Just an interesting remembrance. Nice to see you here and :welcomeB: to LBT and bandland!!!! -
Possible Band Slippage: Doctor will remove the band but refuses to replace
faithmd replied to Ladyj2's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Lady J, get a new surgeon, NOW. It certainly is NOT right that he would threaten you in this manner. He works FOR YOU, not the other way around. Lemme guess, he does many more bypasses than bands, right? Like Liz said, if you gotta travel, then travel if you can to get to a good surgeon who can help you. Many folks here travel several hours by car or by plane to get to their docs once they find someone they trust. It's not easy, but sometimes it has to be done. -
Joint Juice - dietary supplement for joints - containing glucosimine
faithmd replied to LOT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think you'd need to discuss it with your surgeon. Sparking water is carbonation, which is generally speaking a no-no for us post band. Some surgeons are revisiting that, but you'd need to talk to your doc. -
SoapOpera: try Obesity Law and Advocacy Center It is a website for a law firm that helps people deal with their insurance companies when they have issues like this one.

First, you need to go by what YOUR doctor told you to do. I appreciate that others have offered what their doc says, but you really need to follow your doc's advice. If that is confusing to you, please call the office and ask. Second, clear liquid is just that, it is CLEAR, you can SEE THROUGH it. It can be colored pink or red or purple or green or yellow, but it is something you can see through. Think of it this way, if you pour a clear liquid (or melt a popsicle or jello) through a filter, there wouldn't be any particles left. You can't do that with something cloudy like Soup or milk or ice cream. Those are all full liquids. Some docs say that Protein drinks are okay while still in the CLEAR phase, so do not, so please don't go by what others sayt their docs let them do, please ask your doc if it's okay to have protein shakes now. Also, the belief is that the body can't process more than about 25 grams of protein at a time, so drinking a shake with 40 or 50 grams of protein in it at once is sort of wasting good protein. Im sure there are some people who process more than 25 grams at a time, but how do you know if you do? there have been a lot of studies about protein lately and lots of new and exciting info is coming out. One thing is that whey is much better than collagen protein, so those little bullets of Protein Drink, are for the most part, crap. WasaBB is kind of our resident protein expert around these parts, do a search, the go advanced and search for posts by wasabubblebutt using the key word protein and you'll find loads of good info.

Go Waters!!!! Goodonya for sticking up for yourself! BTW, that would be yet another reason I won't be allowing anyone near my belly or my band other than the PA or the surgeon who put it in. I do understand the "fill tech" (good name choice, BTW) can easily be trained to do fills, it's not a complicated process from what I gather. The problem comes when someone who is not a licensed provider is the one choosing how to fill you and how to judge what to put in. I certainly cannot guarantee that a PA or RN or MD would have looked at the chart to see what size band you have before sticking you, but one would hope they would have. Guess that's another reason to go for fills with fluoro. But geez the cost difference can be staggering. Glad you got it worked out, and very glad you won't be paying for more fills! Suzzzie: Yep, that's the way I am, or rather, that's the way I was. It seems in the last week or so I'm feeling a bit more restricted. I dont' know if I'm getting a handle on my head hunger or something else is going on. Still haven't gotten a fill yet and it really does seem like I'm more satisfied on less. Weird, huh?

Huge weight loss and plastic surgery......
faithmd replied to marieze's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
With that much weight to lose (I'm in your same position) it is inevitable. Of course, there is a big difference between needing a lower body lift (I don't think a simple tummy tuck will do it for that kind of loss), and getting one. -

The likelihood of causing internal injuries to your organs are slim considering the size of the needle and the depth it would take to get into your peritoneal cavity (abdomen). But there certainly is a larger risk to hitting the tubing. That's one of the possibilities whether it is a hard port to access or not.
