Why do hide our decision about our weight surgery?
Opie commented on Maddy's blog entry in Maddy Bronstein's Blog
Interesting question, I think for me years of shame and the constant yo yo-ing of losing and gaining with the past 20 years of people periodically if I lose, wow you look good, what are you doing. I have found in the past seven weeks since surgery that I am being very open with most people who have know me for a while. It is greeted with support and friends excited about my decision. I had my first fill yesterday and was drinking only liquids yesterday and while I was teaching my grad class a student offered me a piece of chocolate I said no thanks and she pushed a bit, and I said I am only on liquids right now. After class I told her why, and it was fine. But in going back to that original question I think it comes form years of feeling shame from obesity. -

From: Flying with a band - advice from my Doc
Opie commented on genesishanna's blog entry in genesishanna's Blog
I just got back from NYC from Los Angeles, My doctor did warn me of this before my trip, I did notice it a little bit and just had tomato juice when the cart went by. He suggested only drinking and also said that sometimes it takes 3 hours after the flight to become normal again. -
It has been almost two weeks since the surgery, I am so in this and enjoying the process. I am working out and feeling great and have lost a total of 15.8 pounds. I have a lose it icon on my phone and log all my workouts and liquid intakes, and to watch the graph of the weight going down is very satisfying. My incision are healed and I spent the day river snorkling and trying to chase trout with a net, hilarious and active and no trout for my partner's dinner. One of my best friends is the swimmer Diana Nyad and had a great work out with her today. Check out BravaBody work out cd's very inspiring. I don't know how to get in all my protein with the switch to soft foods, any advise of how you get 60 grams of protein? Do you stop the yummy protein drinks completely?

Totally Frustrated Newbie Needs Advice
Opie commented on ALittleLoopy's blog entry in ALittleLoopy's Blog
I agree as well, you really have to stop the bad food and follow the very clear instructions from liquid to soft food. I was banded 8/24 and am down 17lbs but I am really following the instructions and really feel satisfied and not hungry. Protein, protein and more protein. Log all your intake and get that 30min of working out in a day and you will see results. But not with pizza, whopper and donuts, you have to realize that it is a tool and you need to do the emotional work around eating and the physical work out as well to have some success. -
Hmm that is an interesting thought. I am flying out NYC from LA on Saturday and have protein packs to bring with me. So far today after lunch and breakfast I have done 23g of protein. It is strange to chew again.

Protein Drinks - which ones?
Opie replied to COOGOO's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like Isopure and they have the clear drink or the smoothies. The smoothies taste the best, but I added crystal light into the ice tea drink and it helped a lot. -
Unfortunately she has placed the addiction of food with alcohol, dealing with the emotional issues of addiction will surely help your whole family. You should try to get into some counseling together. Have an honest conversation with your kids, all sit down and discuss the feelings that drinking has on each of you.

Last night it was 4 days since I had the surgery and my partner and I were invited to a dinner party/end of the summer party. Many friends who we know from our sons elementary school. It went very well, I shared with the hosts why I wasn't eating and it wasn't embarrassing or awkward at all. The person passing trays around kept forcing me to take something and I said no thank you at each stop and finally she stopped asking. I got tired at the two hour mark and we were ready to go home. I sipped at water and had wonderful conversations and my partner was able to have fun socializing. My life has an enourmous amount of social events, so to have the first one under my belt in a very easy environment is a relief. Otherwise I am doing fine, slight headache, but no hunger at all. Isopure is better with a bit of crystal light sprinkled in, such a helpful tip.
