  1. I agree with Gman. If nurses were talking crap about someone because of their religion or color, you'd be reporting that nurse to the hospital administration in a heartbeat. I think the same should be done for this case because it could seriously undermine the care this patient gets. HIPPA laws should come into play here as well. You're not allowed to discuss a patient's medical history or care in a public area, period. Why is it okay to discuss openly that this patient has had WLS? Would it be okay if the patient had stomach cancer or HIV or heart disease? I'm not normally reactionary about stuff like this, but these people are the ones who we are entrusting our lives to on a daily basis. IMO, it's totally wrong for them to hold any medical procedure up to ridicule. People like your co-workers are why many WLS patients want to hide their surgery from friends, family and co-workers. I'm totally open about my WLS, and I hope that my being up front about it will help to reduce the stigma for those who choose WLS in the future.

    Help Me...

You are pre-op and just starting the journey? Or you're a new post op? Either way, you know the vanilla cupcake is a bad idea because of the sugar and carbs. Either give it to someone else or trash that cupcake in a way you know that you can't go back and get it. There is nothing of redeeming value in a cupcake, unless it's made of Protein. If you're a new post op, it's going to hurt to eat that cupcake, too. Good luck! THIS is the part of WLS that's tough...making better decisions about what goes in our mouths.

    Protein Bars

Sams carries the Premier Protein bars. I don't know about Costco, but I've heard that they have them.

    Water

Want a reason to drink the Water? Water helps with the weight loss. When I get in my full 64 oz of water daily, I lose faster, have more regular BMs, feel better and don't battle head hunger. The water flushes out fat and toxins, including a lot of those hormones that make us crazy after surgery. My mood stays more level, and I don't get hungry as often. Water also helps keep our skin hydrated, making any moisturizing routine we are doing to avoid loose skin more effective.
  5. You may need an acid reducer to help with the tummy issue. Also, apple juice is somewhat acidic on the new sleeve. Perhaps you could try either mixing it with Water or eliminating it for a few days to see if that helps with the pain. As for not losing weight, everyone above is right, we are pumped full of IV fluids during surgery and it takes some time for that weight to go away. Good luck!!
  6. You're hitting the classic 3 week stall. Don't sweat it, just keep working your plan and the weight loss will start up again. This is a good time to take your measurements and compare them to your measurements from pre-op, or for comparison down the road. My pattern seems to be that I lose for awhile, then I stall and lose inches during the stall. I walked out of my first pair of pants during a stall.

    I Find It Odd

I had the same diet as Mwrarr, 1-1-2-2. I still don't do much bread or carbs, even at a year out.

    Surgery In Six Hours

Good luck! Welcome to the loser's bench and, YES, you made the right decision!
  11. It takes awhile for others to start commenting. For me, it was at about 70 pounds lost when acquaintances started really noticing the change. Friends and family started noticing much sooner, maybe around 30 pounds lost. I think that was because I lost weight in my face first.

    Protein Bars

I have a Premier Protein bar most mornings for breakfast. It's a red letter day for me when I end up with the Yogurt Crunch flavor!

You Don't Know Her Story, So Give Her A Chance....

You look fantastic! I don't know what to say to help you cope with your coworkers, but I liked your post.
  14. Your husband's opinion will change once he sees the results you get. Mine told me that I should "just" eat right and exercise before surgery. I'm 13 months post-op, have lost 120 pounds and a few days ago we saw a woman who was probably 450-500 pounds. His first words to me about her were "She needs the surgery". Eventually, your hubby will figure out that there comes a point where medical intervention is not only good, but necessary. You do what you know is right for you and let him watch you transform yourself! Good luck!!

    Seeing A Therapist

I firmly believe in therapy, especially for those of us who seek out WLS! There's no point in having this surgery without doing the head work, too. We all have some issue surrounding food or we wouldn't be obese. A therapist is trained to help us identify and deal with those issues. IMO, some follow-up therapy also helps us deal with the mental aspects of losing weight so quickly, with the rapidly changing body image, and with the "crazy" that goes with this whole journey (i.e. not seeing the changes, missing food, dealing with other people's opinions of our weight loss, and dealing with the increased attention from the opposite sex). Good luck!!

    Bump In The Road

I would LOVE to see you get a second opinion on whether you need surgery for a ductal abnormality. I had my first mammogram for lumpy breasts at 35. I jumped through a couple of years of hoops, repeat mammograms, appointments with a breast surgeon, etc. Thankfully, my surgeon wasn't anxious to start cutting, but took a very cautious route. He encouraged me to have follow up mammograms and to always keep a personal copy of my mammo films, which I have done. After last year's mammogram, I was sent to a different doctor. He came into the appointment with a plan for surgery, needle aspirations, etc, all laid out based on that one mammogram. Thankfully, I took my own films with me and was able to show him that the "possibly malignancies" he saw had been there for years and have never grown or changed at all. I am not saying the surgeon/doctor is wrong. I just hate it when a doctor's first approach is to start cutting rather than to cautiously watch a lump. If the doctor suspects a tumor, that's different, but is there a reason to remove a "ductal abnormality" in regard to your health? I'm not pollyanna about the possibility of breast cancer. Seven women that I went to high school with have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last 5 years, all in their early 40's, so I definitely stay on top of my yearly mammograms. But I'm not super anxious to have a doctor start removing lumps unless there is a medical reason to do so. I hope you'll get a second opinion. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Congrats on having a date and starting your journey!!!
  21. You won't fail. The sleeve works almost like magic for the first few months. By then, you'll be so motivated that you'll do what's necessary to get you there. I usually write LONG posts, but instead I'm going to attach two pictures to give you and idea of what's possible... and so you know that you will not fail. If I can do this, anyone can!!
  22. I ran track in high school and was always very active...until I had a bad knee injury while pregnant with my second son. Combine the injury with forced inactivity due to a c-section two weeks after the injury and I had a difficult time walking for several years. By the time I was totally healed, I'd gotten away from the active mindset. I made it to 352 pounds before my inactivity and weight caught up with me. Once the weight started effortlessly sliding off, it seemed natural to start moving more. The more I move, the better my results, the better my results, the more I want to move. That's my story.
  23. Guy Fieri eats more during his taste tests than I do in an entire day, usually! I can't watch him anymore, although I OD'd on DDD right after surgery. I guess I was living vicariously through him.
