1989

    From the album: My Journey

This was taken when I was in high school. I weighed about 145 my senior year. My goal weight is 140.
2. From the album: My Journey

I am at the far right in the blue dress. This was August 1999. I had been taking phentermine to lose weight and get down to this size. I was still probably around 170 or so.
From the album: My Journey

This was July 2011. My rear is on the right. I am standing next to my 130 pound daughter.
4. From the album: My Journey

I weighed about 180 or so in this photo. My dad had recently lost a lot of weight and was at about 350 pounds. I arranged to have him fitted for a tux because I had learned at my siblings' weddings that he would always try to back out of going at the last moment because he didn't have anything to wear.
I took before pics...

Even though I hated seeing my before pictures, I am thrilled they are "before." I am glad I have them, and I really need them to see how far I have come because the scale and measurements don't always tell the full story. Don't be afraid of them, Mel. The pics will get better! After pics are always best when compared to the before pics.

    People who have a nutritionist...

My nutritionist gave me guidelines for maintenance, so it isn't for the first six months. This is what she recommended for maintenance: Calories post-op: less than 1,000; for maintenance for women, 1200-1500 and for men 1600-1800. Protein - meet your personal goals (mine is 70). If you consistently exceed protein intake by more than 15 grams a day, you can develop gout. Carbohydrate - suggest 100-150 gm carbohydrates per day, which is about 30 gm per meal. Limit to 15 gm sugar per meal or snack Fat: reduce intake of fat to control calorie intake She recommended toast over bread or trying crackers and tortillas since they don't ball up like fresh bread can. I hope this helps a bit.

    When to buy new clothes

I'm about where you are -- I'm almost 7 weeks post op and have lost 39 pounds. I started this journey wearing size 20 jeans. They are now too big. They slide down, and I end up stepping all over the legs. I do have a lot of size 18 pants, but I didn't own anything smaller. I ended up buying two belts new. The size choice was between XL and L, and I ended up going with the L. One of the belts I bought was the kind where it has grommets as a design, so basically the entire belt has holes for the fastener. It should last me a while. I am going to have to get rid of my size 20 jeans soon. I may keep one pair just to remind me how far I get. I bought two pairs of size 16 jeans from a second-hand store this weekend. Last weekend, I bought several shirts at a second-hand store. I had tried on size 16s in a retail store earlier that day, and I was thrilled but not thrilled enough to pay $40 for a new pair. I think my shirts are getting too big for me much faster than my pants. Shirts that fit me just a month ago are now billowing all around me. I did buy a couple of shirts on clearance the other day -- size large, and they fit great. I am kicking myself though. I had several 15/16 size jeans earlier this summer before I decided to have surgery. I gave them all away. I didn't think I'd be fitting into them anytime soon.

    Remove steri-strips?

I did take mine off early -- between one and two weeks, but I was starting to get a reaction to the bandages. I had a drain, and for the first week was changing the bandage every day. When they took the drain out at one week, they put a band-aid over it. The band-aid fell off the next day, and it had already left a red rash where the band-aid was at. I took all the steri-strips off at that point. I was getting a reaction under a couple of them. I've never had a reaction to bandages before. I was kind of surprised about the reaction. It did clear up after a week or so. I haven't used any bandages since then to see if it would happen again.

    I took before pics...

I did my before pics in a bra and panties from front, side and back. I was mortified how I looked especially from the back. I took another set a month later, and it was so much better. I am not planning on posting those online, but it was nice to see the changes. It is a real motivator.

    Eating Out - Embarrasing???

I have been out to eat a few times since my surgery including when I was on an all liquid diet. I've relied on ordering cups of Soup. I don't explain myself. There are a lot of reasons people might not be eating such as they just ate but went along with friends, etc. The hardest thing for me is ordering something to drink in a bar. They don't carry Sobe Water. I tend to order tomato juice, which comes in a little can. The other day I had chicken alfredo. I ate the chicken and broccoli but didn't eat the noodles. I scraped most of the sauce off. Someone with me ate my dinner roll. I ended up taking most of it home, and my husband had it for lunch the next day. I have no idea if anyone was watching me eat. I concentrated on the people I was with.

    Record Keeping

I use myfitnesspal.com and the app for my phone. I love the phone app since I can record when I am on the run, and I have four kids, so I am on the run a lot. It's a free program.

    Vitamins- what time?

I take Celebrate vitamins. The company recommends taking the multivitamin in the morning with the calcium and again at night. I take the iron in the afternoon (at least two hours after taking the calcium).
  17. Tonight I'm going to my second support group that is face to face. My first one was before my surgery, which was over a month ago. I have to admit that I do not look forward to going to these meetings. It is probably why tonight will be the first one I've gone to since my surgery. I enjoyed my first support group meeting, but I haven't wanted to go back. I think the distance to a meeting is part of my problem. They range anywhere from 45 minutes to 75 minutes away from me. It is just the last thing I want to do on a busy weekday night when I am already hauling my kids all over the place. I wish there were groups closer to me. I don't think the idea of a support group is so bad. I come to this forum almost every day, and I love it. I know there are studies that have showed people who attend the support groups lose more weight, but I wonder if online support groups have the same impact. My local meetings are only an hour long, and if I chose just one of the four possible locations it would be just once a month. It just seems to be hard to do when I factor in the drive. Who wants to spend 3 hours to attend a meeting after working all day? OK. I'm whining, and I liked the support group meeting I went to and this forum. So what's my problem? Why am I dreading tonight? I suspect it is the 1 hour and 15 minute drive home after. I hate getting home after 9 p.m.
  18. I stocked up a cupboard in my office. I have some of my Iron pills there since I'm supposed to take them in the middle of the day. I also have some pouches of the bariatric food: Soups and Fruit drinks. This is something I can make quickly if I find I am working late or forgot to bring something. It is also shelf stable, and I don't have to worry about it going bad. I also brought in about 6 Water bottles and about 6 Sobe waters. Every day, I bring in Protein shakes with me. I put them in a fridge until lunch time. I've found the liquid stuff works best for me since I don't always have a lot of time for lunch. I teach, and if I'm not done with my lunch when it is time for class, I can take my Protein shake in with me. I can't do that with cottage cheese or Soup. I also have some hot chocolate mix there. In the past, I would end up working longer than expected and find myself at the pop machine or coffee pot. Those aren't options for me anymore, so I wanted both hot and cold drink options available.

How long did you wait to drive?

I was supposed to wait until my first post-op visit with my doctor, which was about a week later. I have a teenager with a driver's permit who is always happy to drive me around, so I didn't have any problems. Although Saturday morning, I did the usual "going to get the mail," and I was halfway to the post office before I remembered I wasn't supposed to drive yet. That would have been at about 4 days. I wasn't on narcotics, and it was a quick drive. I didn't drive again for the rest of the week although I didn't have anything bad happen. One other caution I received about driving was that you shouldn't do it right after eating new foods. You don't want to be driving when you have a bad reaction.

    A towel is fashion! NSV

I love your NSV and the way you told us about it! Your enthusiasm made me smile so big! So far, the only way I've been able to do this is to buy bigger towels.
  21. If you continue to have heavy periods (and if you don't want kids), you can ask your ob/gyn about an endometrial ablation. It can help. I had one about a year ago, and I haven't had a period since. I have four kids, so I didn't want another one.

Death by uterus?? Is this possible??!! LOL....

I had an endometrial ablation last year, which was about a year before my WLS. It is not a hysterectomy, but it can help with really bad periods. In fact, I haven't had a period since the surgery. (I should note that I did notice some minor bleeding after my WLS but not even enough to get my underwear dirty.) An endometrial ablation basically scorches the inside of your uterus, so you don't have anything for a lining to adhere to. You can still get pregnant (but the odds aren't good). I have been very happy with my results. Before I had that surgery, I was having to use tampons and pads together and still having bleed through problems. The surgery doesn't guarantee you won't have periods. It is most likely that you won't, but even if you do, they will be MUCH better. I hope that helps. I was amazed when I found out there was a solution besides a hysterectomy.
