  1. I had surgery with dr. Kelly on Aug 29/11 with a starting BMI of 30. I have had success in the past with weight watchers, and even worked for W.W. For a few years, BUT the only way I was able to maintain weightless was through very vigorous exercise 1 hr a day,7 days a week. At 44, with back problems, and a stressful job, that amount of exercise is impossible. Needless to say, even with good eating habits, my weight had been creeping up for years. Now, 8 weeks out, I have lost 26lbs, about 15 -20 more to go.( if you start with a lower BMI, you lose at a slower pace than ppl with higher BMI's) I walk everyday for 20 minutes, and feel like I am no longer fighting my hunger constantly. Yes, you can gain weight with the sleeve once you are in maintenance, but your stomach can NEVER stretch out to the size it was before. You can "eat around" your sleeve by eating too often and high calorie foods, BUT if you need to lose again, it will never be a s hard as it was pre-sleeve. FYI, if you find it hard losing weight now on your own, it is at least twice as hard once you are over 40. I kind of feel like having 85% of my stomach removed was like having my appendix or tonsils removed- an organ I can live quite easily without, lol. The functional part is still there, thats all I need. I starved myself for 20 years witth mediocre results, would I do this surgery again? HELL YA!

    31 BMI

How's everyone from this thread doing now? I had surgery august 29, starting weight 174. After a 3 day pre-op liquid diet, and 1 week after surgery, I was down 13 lbs. Now it has taken me 7 weeks to lose another 13 lbs. 18 lbs to go until goal of 130. It's going very slowly, but I'll get there. I guess this is how it goes with a lower bmi. I would be really interested to hear other low bmi's early weight loss to compare. It does us no good to compare with higher bmi's weight loss, it only discourages you!
  3. Aug 29th with dr. Kelly. So happy I chose him, no issues. You've chosen well, trust your research.
  4. I had surgery Aug 29 and have only lost 23 lbs, I'd say you are doing just fine! That's not slow at all.
  5. I had always thought maybe it is because we are eating so much protein, gaining muscle, losing fat but muscle weighs more than fat.

    My thanksgiving day rant

Oh, and might I add that I have lost 23 lbs and not one person noticed!

    I think I'm a Slow Loser!

5 weeks and 21 lbs which overall isn't horrible, but 13 of those lbs were in the first week, and only 8 in the 4 weeks that followed. I guess I've got a longer road ahead of me than I'd thought
  8. I read on this forum that when you are losing weight quickly that those fat cells that you are burning are dumping estrogen into your system. It seems a lot of ppl experience heavier, longer periods after WLS. If you are taking your multivitamin with iron in it, you should be fine.
  9. There is a blood drive here in a couple weeks.I will be 1 month out. I am doing well, no problems. Do you think it would be alright?
  10. My meeting is next week, we don't have time to leave for meals. What do I do? Pull a jar of baby food outa my purse? I will only be 3 weeks post op then. I don't want to make a big deal about it in front of strangers. Any suggestions?

    One month out

Search for " three week stall" , you"ll find some great information out there. It is NORMAL and is usually followed by a good loss. It just goes to show that it is not just as simple as calories in vs calories burned. Our bodies are complicated machines.
  12. I am only 15 days out but I am amazed at the lack of hunger! Hallelujah! Imagine how much easier dieting is when you're not hungry, you can eat normally ( I will be able to soon anyway) and are truly satisfied with a small amount of food. I am no longer a slave to my stomach.

    sundae???

Tea (decaf) with a teaspoon of honey worked well for me when I was unable to get much for liquids or calories. Now when I have sweet craving I like unsweetened apple sauce, but I sweeten it with stevia. Isn't this surreal trying to get enough calories in,lol?
  14. Do you still have your IV? I had mine until the morning of day 3.
  15. I am not dehydrated, I am not hungry between meals, and I am not drinking 64 oz a day. Is there any other reasons to be drinking so much?
  16. GNC has a lactose free shake with 25 grams of protein. Might be worth a try? The first while I could only tolerate clear protein drinks, now I can drink any kind.

    Pain question

The first 2 days were hell for me. If you feel this good already, you"ll probably be fine.
  18. I have a desk job also, I was off for 10 days, 5 or 6 would have been ok. I'm 15 days out now, and occasionally hit the wall. I expect with taking in so few calories that that is normal for the first while. I do have trouble remembering to drink at work, so I try to make up for it once I get home.
  19. Great thread! I went into surgery thinking that I have had laproscopic surgery before, this shouldn't be too much different. It was! I was in a lot of pain, gas and incision pain for two days. They would disconnect me from the iv to go to the bathroom and forget to hook me back up, so no pain meds at times. I wasn't able to walk very much because every time I tried, I would get feverish, nauseous and start having dry heaves. Not fun. No catheter, drain coming out was a piece of cake. No pain meds after 6 days. 2 weeks out and I've eaten fish, ground turkey, cheese, a wiener, and no problems. The only thing that did bother me was milky protein shakes at first. Clear ones were fine. Honestly,, I don't FEEL a lot different, other than I don't get hungy, and I don't eat much. I treated my second week off from work like a holiday and we went boating, camping visiting etc. With the odd nap. I'm back to work now, and feel normal.
  20. I was sleeved Aug 29, I just left work a few minutes ago and I had half a protein drink left and so I guzzled it, no problem. I prefer getting them down quickly and getting it out of the way instead of sipping all day. How much have you lost so far? I've lost 12lbs, but the scale has been stuck for 4 days now. How are you feeling and what are you eating?

    What do I tell people?

When someone asks why you left early, do you say I was tired or I bled though my pad? Ppl don't need to know every detail of our lives. If you are like me ppl are probably accustomed to you yo-yoing. Yes they will ask, but I find the less I say the better. They will move on and forget soon enough. And you are only responsible for your own health, and weight no one elses. Do what is right for you, don't feel guilty for looking after yourself, even if that includes keeping it to yourself.

    What do I tell people?

If you'll read back, you'll see that I did not lie. If you don't want to help someone who is, don't. Just don't belittle them for making that choice. Please now, can we get back to supporting everyone instead of only the ones who've made the same choices you did?
