The Very Scary Halloween Challenge
transforming jlaroux replied to size10again's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
larrypdot, lets face it, the band is the cheapest of the surgeries and people dont see immediate results, so they see it as not working as well. But i'm glad he questioned me, it helped light a fire under my butt, and made me even more successful! I think I may cancel my next fill, cause I'm pretty comfortable, but I would love to show him what 4 weeks can do to a bandster! lol!! -

The Very Scary Halloween Challenge
transforming jlaroux replied to size10again's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Down to 258, for a loss of 2 pounds. This was Saturdays weight, just didn't have computer access! I can't wait to post next weeks weight loss! So I had a fill on Thursday, and I think I might be at my sweet spot. But the best part of all is that my doctor(who didn't think this would work for me) gave me a hug and told me he was proud of me!!!!! It made my day, and I was floating all afternoon!!!! -
It wasnt the article itself, it was the fact that I (and some of the other bandsters) always feel tlike the doctors office is putting down the band and saying it doesn't work. And this just was another way to go about that. When I went in for my initial consultation with my doc, he told me I would never be successful with the band, that most people are not. he said I had too much weight to lose and I would never be happy. (little did he know, this put a fire under my behind, after I made the decision to go with the band!)

GO... Weight loss bypass surgery may muffle temptation Fri, Oct 14 2011By Rob Goodier NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who've had gastric bypass surgery might make healthier eating choices than those who opt for the weight loss procedure known as gastric banding, say UK researchers who found bypass patients less tempted by sweets and other fattening foods. After surveying patients who had either type of surgery, and performing brain scans on several dozen of them, Dr. Tony Goldstone of Imperial College London and Hammersmith Hospital and his colleagues found that even deep down in their brains, the gastric bypass patients seemed to like high-calorie foods less. "The results suggest that gastric-banding patients had to exert quite a lot of self-control over their eating behavior. Banding patients also had higher concern about their weight," Goldstone told Reuters Health. In contrast, gastric bypass patients "don't feel they have to exert as much cognitive control over what they're eating," said Goldstone, who presented the findings October 4th at the Obesity Society's annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. The two weight loss operations have similar broad goals -- to shrink the stomach so people feel full with less food. In gastric bypass, the stomach is surgically reduced and one end of it is rerouted to bypass part of the small intestine. With gastric banding, a silicone band placed around the top of the stomach reduces its capacity. Goldstone's team studied 30 gastric bypass patients, 28 gastric banding patients and 20 people who did not have weight loss surgery. All the participants started out obese and the two surgery groups had lost similar amounts of body weight since their respective procedures, an average of 28 percent. Since banding patients lose weight more slowly, those in this study had undergone their procedure an average of 18 months earlier, compared to the bypass patients at 10 months post-surgery. Participants filled out an eating behavior questionnaire, and 20 people in each group underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while looking at pictures of food. Among the significant differences in questionnaire responses, researchers found, the gastric bypass patients reported having to restrain themselves less, or finding it easier to restrain themselves from eating poorly. They also did less impulsive eating -- eating something on sight, not out of hunger -- and less eating to boost their mood, or "emotional eating." Those who underwent fMRI had fasted overnight, and then viewed pictures of foods and ate ice cream during the brain scan. The gastric bypass patients rated the ice cream and pictures of high-calorie foods as less appealing than did the gastric banding patients. Bypass patients also showed lower activity in brain areas like the orbitofrontal cortex (associated with a reward response), the amygdala (associated with emotion) and in the ventral striatum (which would register the expectation of a reward like food). "The connections between the biology of obesity and the mechanisms of the surgery we use is really a new science established in the last three to five years," said Dr. Robin Blackstone, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, who was not involved in the study. "Now that we understand more about how these procedures are working, it makes sense that the bypass patients would have more control. The band would not produce those same effects." © Thomson Reuters 2011. . Lunch Ideas Needed After Lap Band Surgery ?
transforming jlaroux replied to JinTx's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I just about always take leftovers. When I don't its tuna fish, cottage cheese, chicken salad with grapes in it, string cheese. I've purchased canned chili and will do some of that, 3 bean salad is good. The meatball idea sounds great! i need to try that, and I love the wrap idea also. i haven't done wraps yet. -

How so after surgery do you get your first fill
transforming jlaroux replied to Carfigure's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my first fill at 6 weeks. I wished it had been sooner, but the doc said that I needed the 6 weeks for my tummy to heal. He was also very aggressive with my first fill (6cc) -
Pouch Stretching Information
transforming jlaroux replied to dandeegan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You probably don't have a fill yet! There is little to no restriction prior to a fill. your tummy was swollen which is why you initially had restriction, now that it has gone down, you are back to pre-surgery tummy. Take this time prior to your first fill to heal, not worry about weight loss. Follow your doctor's orders, your tummy is not stretched. -
The Very Scary Halloween Challenge
transforming jlaroux replied to size10again's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh 260... still. However, I am now wearing a 20, instead of a 22! woohoo. I,ve exercised twice this week. AND I get a fill on Thursday! I know I'm getting .5 cc and I think this will take me to my sweet spot. I can feel it, like I just know I'm almost there! Then I think I'll start losing again. So... I have become one of those people who's body has decided to switch to inches instead of pounds! -
swallowed a golf ball
transforming jlaroux replied to glowormvl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
White chicken is very hard for me to swallow, and I avoid it. I can do the dark meat, as long as it's super tender. And, yes, that describes for me what "stuck" feels like. -

I must be doing something wrong.
transforming jlaroux replied to cantw82loosew8's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
you're not doing anything wrong. you lost in the beginning due to the swelling in your stomach and the liquid diet. Now you are probably eating semowhat normal and have a normal appetite. This time before your fills is for healing, not losing. This is the way the band works. you need to have some fills and get to your green zone. you will start losing again. What you are experiencing is VERY normal. My mind set during this time went something like this: Get fill and I know I'l lose in the first few days, then just maintain that weight loss until the next fill because I know I'm not at optimal restriction yet. I've had 3 fills, and looking forward to my 4th! I have started to lose somewhat consistently, but I am not at my green zone just yet. -
