I had a rough start. The day of surgery, I went in,at 5 am and was prepped. Prior to surgery, I was told I would spend the night at the hospital following surgery and I would have some discomfort at the port site and incision sites. The surgery itself only lasted about an hour. I remember waking up extremely groggy and nauseous and with a horrible chest pain and difficulty breathing. The attending nurse gave me some medication to help with the nausea which didnt help much at all. When I complained I had difficulty breathing and had severe chest pain, they gave me what seemed like an asthma breathing treatment. I was then told they didnt have any hospital beds for me so I was to be discharged immediately. It took all my strength to get my clothes on and even though I continued to ask if they were sure I was well enough to go home and if I needed to see my surgeon before being discharged the nurse insisted I was fine and the second I got off the gurney, they wheeled it away to prep it for the next patient. I felt extremely rushed. At no time before surgery was I warned that there would be this kind of pain.
I went home and tried to rest. I took my liquid vicodin but it didnt do anything for the chest pain and I was unable to lay down at all. I was so scared i was having a heart attack or a serious lung issue that after a few hours I couldnt take the pain anymore and my mom rushed me to urgent care. They did a bunch of tests and then called an ambulance and sent me to the emergency room at the hospital where I had my surgery that morning. I spent 6 hours getting poked and prodded and x-rayed repeatedly. i was so dehydrated they had difficulty getting a vein to get blood and I must have gotten needle stuck 2 dozen times that night. I was so tired and sick and in pain. They kept giving me drug after drug to try to aleviate the pain so I could tolerate laying down long enough to have them do a scan to check my lungs and heart.
Finally, i was pumped with enough drugs my pain lowered enough I was able to relax and I kept falling asleep while the doctors kept coming to take more tests and ask me questions. I was discharged at 3 am.
I guess it wouldnt have been as bad had I known the severe chest pain was normal and expected it prior to surgery, but the fear of not surviving my post op issues was terrifying.
I followed up a couple of days later with another surgeon since my surgeon was not available. I later learned my surgeon was no longer working for reasons I am not quite clear, so I continued my follow ups with another surgeon for my fills.
It has now been over a year since the surgery, and I have lost about 50 lbs which is I guess considered a slow weight loss but I am satisfied with it.
