I had decided to learn more about the LapBand procedure and how it would help me loose weight in December 2010 after speaking with a friend that had underwent the surgery. He only had positive things to say about the surgeon and the procedure. I attended the program informational session on January 26th 2011 at the Wyndham hotel and convention center in Portland,ME. I had learned a little about the program such as the important basics and wanted to learn more. I enrolled in the bariatric program and learned a great deal about my relationship with food and what I can do to help me change the way I see food.
Over the following months, I attended informational nutrition classes along with blood tests to make sure my vitamin levels were where they needed to be. I also had to have my doctors sign releases for the surgery to be done. It is important to note at this time that I am currently seeing a pulmonologest for sleep apnea, a cardiologest for bigemini (extra heart beat) and my regular physician. All of which feel this has the potential to help me in the long run. Personally, I can't wait to be able to stop using the C-PAP machine at night and have more energy, more range of motion, maybe even have the bigemini correct itself since it wouldn't have such a load on my heart. All the blood tests showed that my levels were withing normal limits except for my vit D which I had to boost up then maintain. All doctors signed off and then it was time to wait for the insurance to answer whether or not they would cover the procedure.
In the meantime, I had met with the surgeon, Dr. Renee Wolff of Casco Bay Surgery. I was a bit nervous but she put me at ease almost immediately. She was to the point and seemed very confident. She answered all of our questions without hesitation and made me feel comfortable with her ability. She also was highly recommended by prior patients.
The first week of July I recieved a phone call from the surgeons office. The LapBand procedure has been aproved by my insurance, so now I have to watch my weight and make sure I don't go over what my weight was when I started the program. Surgery is scheduled for the end of August 2011.
I'll update the story as more happends.
