I just thought I would clarify what PCOS is for those that read this thread. PCOS = Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: It is caused by over production of certain hormones in the females. Following information from this website: http://www.pcosupport.org/ Is also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome or Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD). Affects an estimated 6-10% of all women and most don't even know they have it. Is treatable, but not curable, by medications, changes in diet and exercise. Is one of the leading causes of infertility in women. Has been identified for 75 years and they still aren't sure what causes it. Affects far more than just reproduction. IT IS NOT just a cosmetic problem. Can include the following symptoms: Irregular or absent menses Numerous cysts on the ovaries in many, but not all, cases High blood pressure Acne Elevated insulin levels, Insulin Resistance, or Diabetes Infertility Excess hair on the face and body Thinning of the scalp hair (alopecia) Weight Problems or obesity that is centered around your mid section Thanks

No I do not have any children and I am still single. I am hoping that once I lose weight everything will fall into place man and children. We shall see. Since I am getting older the option of children is becoming slim. Take care.

GOING ALONE! Anyone else?
Amelia40 replied to lizrbit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Sister in law took me to the hospital but did not stay. I was in the hospital overnight and the my sister picked me up the next day dropped me of at home and was alone from then on. I agree having help would have been great but I made it alone. Where do you live? I noticed you are having surgery in Huston. You may want to check and make sure that it is okay with the hospital and Dr. that you take a taxi back to the airport/hotel. Many will not let you because you will be drugged and they do not want to be responsible if anything happens. Good Luck! Amelia -
Shelley, I had my consult 12/03/06 however I had 2 other surgeries sheduled for December and waited until I was out recupirating from one of the surgeries to get the psyc and nutrionist appt done. I was then approved and had surgery scheduled before I returned to work (lap band 1/31) One of the surgeries I had 12/26 put me out of work until 2/6. So there was an overlap with my time off. I have short term disablity through my work and when we are out we have to use 5 days of vacation before the STD kicks in. So I thought I would take 5 days of vacation from 2/6 out and then any more STD after that. I found out however when they called about my STD approval that since I never returned to work this was all under the same claim and that I did not need to use any vacation time for my Lap-band surgery. Not sure if you have STD benefits or not but it is something to consider. Also my Dr. wanted me out for 2 weeks, most people seem to return to work within a week or less. If you are out for 2 weeks for first surgery you maybe able to have the lap-band surgery in the 2nd week and still return to work. Just a thought. Good luck Amelia

I am 39 and was only diagnosed 9/06 with PCOS. My understanding is that I have probably had all my life, however since my periods were normal up until recently I was never diagnosed. My is much greater than 34. It was because I was diagnosed with PCOS that I decide to have the Lap band Surgery. Had I not been diagnosed I may not have had it done. Which is what I told my Dr. pre-op. One of the things I learned in my research on PCOS is that in order to stay lean a person PCOS would have to eat 1/2 of the amount that a lean person without PCOS would eat. I figured that I would never be able to do this without help, therefore Lap-band. I just had my surgery on 1/31/07 and plan on working with the "tool" to get to a normal BMI. As for having children what is good about the band is that you can have an unfill if need be during preganancy. Sorry this may not help much but I understand your frustration with teh PCOS. Good luck to you and i hope you find answer you need. Take Care, Amelia

Is it normal to be burbing?
Amelia40 replied to colleensunshine's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery 1/31 and had excessive burping for mor than a week. I called my dr 8 days out and he said that this is normal. It is the gas that they put in during surgery. Today is the first time that the burping is better. I still burp but not after every think I drink or every move I make. So it will get better hang in there. He also told me there is nothing to take for it. I tried gas-x as several had recommended however for me this did not work. Good Luck Amelia -
Mandy, This works for me. Amelia

Thanks Carolyn, for the Prevacid recommendation, unfortunately I was on Prevacid for GERD prior to surgery, however I had to stop taking it back in August because I have low B12, B1 and B6. My Dr felt that the prevacid prevents the Intrinsic Acid that is needed for B12 digestion/absorbtion from working appropriately. I am now on B12 shots Bi-monthly. So unfortunately can not take it. Thanks, Amelia

Since I am still burping quite a bit a week out from surgery, I called the Dr to today and asked if it is normal. He said it is normal and that I am still releasing the gas that was put in during surgery and there is nothing that I can take to help. (Gas -x does not help). They told me if I still have problem in a couple of days to call back. Thanks!

Has anyone tried carb solutions? I had surgery on 1/31 and have not yet wanted to make it or drink it.

I had my surgery at 3 pm (talk about a long day without food or water). I did not leave the hospital until 5 pm the next day and the Dr was willing to let me stay another night but I was afraid insurance might not cover it. I live alone so I have had to prepare everything myself. The first couple of days all I had was water and a couple spoonfuls of jello I made pre-op. Saturday was the first day I felt like making anything and had some cream of wheat and Sunday I had some cream tomatoe soup. Sunday was really the first day I had any energy. Are any of you having problems with burping excessively. Every time I sit-up, stand or even just sitting here I burp. I have tried taking gas-x for this but it does not seem to help. I have tried drinking more water thinking that maybe I do not have enough in my stomach. Thanks,

I was banded on 1/31 and can not imagine returning to work yet. I still have shoulder abdominal pain. My Dr told me it would be 2 weeks before I would return to work. I do not want to rush anything. The more time the internal stitches around the band are allowed to heal the better. Amelia

My Dr told me I can take my pills without cutting some of the smaller ones. Also in one of our support groups we discussed medications and we were told the gel tabs can be okay since they melt. Also if you are taking the gas-x for the pain in your shoulders from the gas they put in during surgery it will not help. Per my Dr there is nothing you can take for the pain or to relieve it. other than walking and a heating pad. I just had my surgery 1/31 and felt the shoulder pain immediately after surgery. Good Luck.

A thread for Single Bandsters
Amelia40 replied to NewBeginnings2018's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I will be a new single bandster on 1/31. I am 39 never married. Had a few serious bf's but I usually did most of the work on the relationship. Hoping that in a few months I can find someone that will want to be with me as much as I want to be with him. I loved reading the post on this thread. Keeping the band a "secret"???
Amelia40 replied to kity's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personally I have told many friends and family that I am having the surgery. I am also not concerned about what people think of my decision. It is what I have to do for me. And what they think of me having the surgery could be no worse than thought of me being over weight. I would hope that most people understand that the decision is not an easy one. I am scheduled for surgery 1/31. Good luck/God Bless. Amelia -

I am new to this. I found out today that I have been approved and my surgery has been scheduled for next Wed 1/31/07, with Dr Woody Denham. My highest weight last month was 330, I have lost some because of another surgery I had last month. I will find out today at my pre-op appointment what my starting weight will be. I am excited about starting my new life.:clap2: Can anyone tell me how long before you returned to work (desk job)? I am trying to get an idea of how long I might need to be off work. Thanks, Amelia

My Primary Care Doctor is Holding Things Up
Amelia40 replied to lapbandliz's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I called my insurance company for the approval for the pysch evaluation I asked them personnaly if they required it and I was told they did not. But I went to the psychologist for the evaluation and he was not expecting to give me the "evaluation/personality evaluation" that day he only did an interview. I called my Dr's office and he said as long as the Psychologisy had enogh information to make a recommend then he did not need the complete evaluation but he did need the psycologist recommendation. I do not know if this information helps or not, but it may help cut your costs down if the psycologist could just make a recommendation and not the full evaluation. -
getting pressured to do bypass over band!
Amelia40 replied to skatkat's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am scheduled for the Lap band surgery on 1/31. When the Dr asked me why I wanted the Lap band I told him because of less risk and if RNY was my only choice I would not be sitting in his office. I told my mom today that I am to young to be suffering from all the malabosortion the comes with the RNY surgery. I currently do not have children and I am getting older but I have a couple of years and with the band adjustments can be made to allow a baby to be nurished with RNY why that is more difficult. These are just some of the reasons why I have choosen the band. Good Luck, Amelia
