Diet Soda, Carbonated Water question
ismini9 replied to former_vbg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told by my doctor that carbonated drinks expand your stomach and that I should avoid drinking them for the rest of my life! -
Not agreeing with the surgeon.

If I am not mistaken, the excess weight lost via the sleeve surgery is 65% whereas with the bypass it is 70%. So this is not a huge difference. The problem is that with the bypass you are basically telling your body to start doing the work via a different method, which may have negative effects in the long term. With the sleeve however, if you are careful not to start drinking carbonated drinks which expand the stomach you can maintain yourself at a desired weight... Hope this helps! Good luck! -

You have to eat small meals every 3-4 hours so that you body can burn fat. If you don't eat your body does not burn as Indymom and Autumnlily correctly mentioned. -
mine too!

One Year Later-----I need some feedback.

I think you should restrict eating sweets to once a week and stop drinking soft drinks! Soft drinks make the stomach grow and you will soon find yourself eating more and more... It would be a shame to waste the effort you have made to date. Maybe also try some exercise, especially walking at a fast pace so that you can get your heart rate up. -
I wish you all the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done, I wish you a speedy recovery. I had mine on the 1st of July and I am recovering. Symptoms were as you describe them. I am still on a liquid diet and it gets easier by the day. on Saturday I will start the mushy food... I, too, am very pleased with my decision!

Hello everyone. I have just registered on VerticalSleeveTalk.com and wanted to share my experience with you. I had my sleeve surgery on the 1st of July in a hospital in Greece. I remember the pain right after the surgery, being the pain of the gas trying to come out of my body. Otherwise I don't remember having any other pain on the first day. From the second day onwards the pain mainly focuses on the stomach, which feels a bit stiff (like a sore muscle) and the pain of the hole over the stomach where they have attached a bag that collects blood. This pulled me a bit and had some difficulty walking and getting out of bed. I started to drink Water on the 4th of July. The first experience was, let's say, very gassy! It felt like gas was having a party all over my body. I am home now and i am on a liquid diet until Saturday (9 July). I have to take small sips otherwise it is quite painful. I think the stomach has to get a bit of training before starting to accept large liquid quantities again. I go to the toilet (for number 1 and number 2) regularly. However, since I am only on liquids number 2 feels like number 1 I have lost 5kgs since my surgery and I am very excited about the effect this will have on my life. Everything is going fine to date (knock on wood)! I would be pleased to hear from others who have recently had the surgery! -

Too drastic a step for BMI of 31?
ismini9 replied to Eyemallrt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Other than back pain and loss of energy, i also had knee pains. I have tried every diet there is and always ended up gaining weight as I could not control what I ate. I was quite afraid of the surgery, as I would be for any surgery - and this is a major one, believe me - but I went ahead and did it. I did it on the 1st of July, have already lost 5 kilos and I am very excited for my future. For me, being a person who cannot control herself with food, the only way out of it was ending the hunger. I have not eaten since the 30th of June and I am not hungry! In the last two years I gained 20 kilos and I am just going up. My BMI is around 40 today and I too was afraid of it increasing. I am not sure however if you can have the operation with a BMI below 40. Furthermore, my age (32) was an important factor in my decision making. The body will recover after the surgery and readjust to the loss weight much easier. It will also give me chances for a healthier life. Finally, regarding keeping it a secret from anyone but your family, I think you could also tell your close friends. You will need their support. I too feared about being judged but I am opening up to more people every day and it feels good. I have received no judgement, but rather supporting comments. Also, you should not be ashamed of this - it happens more and more every day. You should be proud for fighting obesity in any way you can. One last comment: Get references for the doctor you choose - it is a very delicate procedure!
