Did any of you ever wonder...

I will need to remember this when the inevitable stalls happen! Love it.

I remember you had some health problems before the surgery. Great to hear you are feeling great.
  3. I live 45 minutes away from the hospital (Jacksonville). I have other surgeons & hospitals of excellence that are closer but I am leaning for Dr. Marema. Who will be your surgeon?

Melissa spoke to the group after the doctor (forgot his name). I love that she had the surgery there and also the gal that photocopied my insurance card & drivers license. How great to have found you!

  4. Hi FloraBama!

I just got home from the bariatric information session at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. I just read you will be having your surgery there soon. Hopefully we can keep in touch. I would love to hear all about your experience with them.

    Best Wishes,

    My Story

I loved reading about your journey. I just arrived from my first bariatric orientation ever, so I really can't help you much, but I wanted to welcome you here. For the last month I have been here constantly and everyone has been great. I am sure you will find the support you are looking for.

    Tell Your Story

Welcome! I am new here as well. I think you will like this website and find tons of information. Have you read your insurance policy? Don't go by what they tell you on the phone. Seems they do cover it since you didn't get a definite no from them. I will consider self paying here in the US or going overseas but only after I am certain my insurance won't cover it. I know I will have to jump lots of hoops but I would rather stay close to home because of convenience and post op care. Best wishes!

    Denied!

We are in the exact same predicament. I also considered gaining weight but my insurance requires proof that I have been 40 BMI or more for 2 years. Read your policy, in my case gaining the weight would not have worked. Don't only go by what the representative is telling you on the phone, check their website of have them mail you their requirements. I will have a sleep study done in a few days. I am hoping my snoring ends up being sleep apnea because then the BMI requirement goes down to 35. If not, I will consider self paying, preferably here in the US. Good luck! I hope it all works out for us.
  16. I have been around here for a few weeks and have even posted once or twice without properly introducing myself. I was fearing getting to know all of you and then being denied by my insurance. Now that I have decided to self pay if need be, I am no longer as scared. So here I go. I am in my early 40's and have been overweight or obese most of my life. Now looking back at my weight history, it seems I went to Weight Watchers every time my BMI got near 40. Argh! So I am now hoping my chronic snoring is sleep apnea! On the bright side, my PCP just measured me and I am one inch shorter than I thought I was. (I swear I stood straight.) So yes, I am now happy to be shorter AND I want to have sleep apnea! My sister in law had gastric bypass years ago, lost 140+ pounds and has been able to maintain it. Despite this, that surgery never appealed to me. Being sleeved is a much better choice for me. As of right now my husband is being very supportive (he might change if it turns out I have to self pay-lol). I am hoping to get to know many of you in this journey we have chosen.

    Talking to your kids?

My child was adopted (she is soon to be 9) and what I learned was not to wait for their questions, but rather bring up the topic at different times very casually. This will avoid their minds going wild with their fantasy thoughts and all will seem "normal". In our case, I know going into details about stomach cutting will make her scared and she will tell the whole school! So I will probably tell her a few days before surgery and not focus on what the surgeon will do, but on my hopes of being healthier (not skinnier). You know your children and what they can handle. They will be fine. :-)
