I have been considering lap band for several years.  My sister had a RNY 5 years ago, and she did lose a lot of weight, but with chronic malabsorption difficulties.
I started my preop requirements in January, and agreed to be in UPMC's PREP study.  I was randomized into the group that meets with a coach weekly for several months, and I am so glad.   I have already lost 43 lbs since February through daily exercise and 1500 calorie diet.  My coach was a great help - thanks again Mallory!
I am scheduled for Lap Band on July 22, and met with my surgeon today.  She mentioned that she is working with a group of surgeons who are doing a plication procedure with the lap band.  She says that the weight loss will be more rapid, and that the risk of slippage is believed to be reduced.  She says they will soon be doing a large clinical trial soon.  I think that I am going to do both procedures.  I hope I am making the right decision.
