Food Intake Questions 101
Pittbull29 replied to crash878905's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are a couple books on Amazom about eating well after WLS. I'm 11 days post-op so I havent been checking them out yet. Maybe they will help. -
Had post Lap Band op appointment today
Pittbull29 replied to Tabby Ann's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't know where you are but my doc actually told me not to walk outside because it's been so hot. Have been walking in the house and tomorrow think I'm going to WalMart or mall to walk in the AC. -
Hey girl that's actually a good idea for a quick meal especially since I hate fish! I've been thinking about replacing a lot of beef with lo-fat ground turkey but the only fish I eat is tuna salad sometimes. Fishsticks would be a good no red meat meal for me. Thanks for the idea.

I was a medical assistant. As someone who worked in the medical field and just knowing people who have had RNY I would steer clear of it. Like people have said it provides the most dramatic results but you are having a non-reversible procedure performed. There are greater risks during the surgery itself. Most of the people I know who have had it have not met their goal weight. They lose as long as they don't have to do any work themselves like eat healthy or exercise. Some people actually gain all of their weight back. I know some who are continually malnourished and have to be hospitalized repeatedly. I know it's not the case for everyone and don't want to insult anyone but I just thought that I would share what I have seen in my experience.

Yeah, you definitely retain fluid before your period. Can gain several pounds. Just remember it's water weight and will go away.

Am mI the ONLY one who DOESN'T weigh everyday/week?
Pittbull29 replied to 14isabella's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one week post-op and weighed today. I weighed last Saturday and Sunday because I had to get fluids at the ER. That was 4lbs gain overnite! Actually just did that for curiosity. I have a friend who weighs herself everyday dieting or not. She swears she'll have a 10lbs difference overnite. I think I will just stick to once a week. -
Can someone tell me WHEN i will be able to drink a reasonable amount of liquid
Pittbull29 replied to ButterflyM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am so glad somebody else is sick of the sweetness of the protein shakes. Before surgery I just wanted something that wasn't sweet. I'm 1 week post-op and have been drinking lots of juice while I can. Only drinking 1 protein shake a day. At least the juice is a natural sugar instead of artificial. Just make sure you get those fluids because I ended up back in the ER Saturday nite getting fluids. I had diarrhea and couldn't drink much and ended up getting dehydrated. Not fun. Good luck. -
I'm just 5 days postop but I'm thinking tacos and burritos with veggies, casseroles that are lower calorie, takeout from the Japanese steakhouse. Just in a lot smaller quantities. I hope I will be able to eat chili with beef and beans or refried (lo fat version) beans. Cheeses and nuts are protein. Don't know if you like cottage cheese but it has protein. You can mix it with mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple and sugar free orange jello and it's delicious. I'm going to try to eat healthier foods but I'm not gonna make eating unpleasant. Good luck.

I'm still having the gas pains in my chest and shoulders. I know it will go away. The thing that is bothering me is where my port is ( I think) hurts terribly when I try to turn over in bed, getting in and out of bed and trying to wipe after I go to the bathroom. It feels like it's on fire and something is tearing loose. My regular nurse was out of the office today but the other one seemed to think it was normal. Any thoughts? Oh, my surgery was Wednesday.

Is this pain normal
Pittbull29 replied to Pittbull29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to go to the ER last nite for IV fluids. Also got rxs for nausea, pain and antibiotics. Had diarrhea starting Thursday and having trouble getting enough fluids. Took off dressings and patch for nausea and got in shower yesterday. Didn't finish shower before I got so weak, lightheaded and short of breath I had to get my boyfriend to get me sitting on toilet while I leaned into him. He was nice and wet after that! Anyway, getting the fluids in today. Still feel weak but haven't slept most of the day like the past several days. Hopefully that's a good sign. When were you guys able to bend over and stuff without discomfort? -

Thanks Dave.

Have hated that forever. And do you notice they're always in furtherest away spot in the store. I guess they don't want the other customers to see the fat people.

Go to the LapBand wry site. If you don't mind driving Dr. Gary Robinson in Statesville. -
Other sources of protein
Pittbull29 replied to Pittbull29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had to laugh. I hadn't heard of hemp protein but I work in nuclear power and have security clearances and drug screens all of the time. That would be so funny to try to explain that! Thanks for the input. -
I'm not a vegetarian but I have had a type of allergy testing done called delayed reaction where you might have a reaction a couple of days later. In this instance regular allergy testing or food elimination diets don't identify them. I'm trying to tough out the pre-op and post-op liquid diet with protein shakes, etc but feel terrible. I am sensitive to milk and milk products including whey, wheat, peanuts, and eggs. The only other things I can think of to eat in liquid stage would be maybe some pureed beans or tofu shakes. Any suggestions?

My nutritionist said they make a whipped peanut butter now so you get more volume with less cals and fat. One of her patients mixes it in her oatmeal so she is getting some fiber and protein.

"Cheater! Cheater! Pumpkin Eater!"
Pittbull29 replied to TheBandedPeach's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I feel very much like you do about all of the artificial, processed, high sodium foods they recommend. I'm from the South so I may not have eaten the most low fat foods but I didn't eat all of the processed stuff......fried chicken, green beans, corn, homemade spaghetti sauce. I'm in my 2nd week of pre-op diet and am thinking about making some of my own healthier versions of protein drinks, etc. I have a terrible taste in my mouth from all of the processed stuff. -
I was sooo wrong about water aerobics.
Pittbull29 replied to Rachel412's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I love water aerobics! Unfortunately most times it's old ladies and men. The last one I went to they just talked all the time and it was terrible. They distracted the instructor and stood in the way when they were supposed to be moving. It's good in that you can make it as hard or easy as you want. I have the gloves that increase resistance and they say that the tennis shoes to wear for water aerobics really work well too. Just wish I could find somewhere to go that I enjoyed and felt like I was able to get a good workout. -
Protein shakes forever?
Pittbull29 replied to DarleneRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing the pre-op diet now and hate the shakes. The reason...... Everything is too sweet! Jello, Popsicles. I have been drinking chicken bullion but it has so much sodium. Any suggestions for some kind of powdered soups or liquid that we can have without too many cals and sodium? -
Have seen many posts about PBing, slimeing and some other terms that I can't remember off the top of my head. Would somebody explain this new language I'm going to have to learn?!

July 4th Cookouts Muuuuaaaahhh!!
Pittbull29 replied to Bodacious Barbie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with you. There is always next year. Plus it sounds like there are more issues. Everyone always wants to eat at our house and we end up spending a fortune on food, really. Yet they never invite us to eat at their houses or if they do they don't put a lot of effort into it. I'm glad people like to come to our home and like the things we fix but damn! Have a good holiday. Go see some fireworks or go see a movie if you can deal with the popcorn smell. That's what I'm gonna do. -
Haven't had my surgery yet but my doc says the patient's safety is the most important thing so he has you stay overnight. That way they can monitor you overnight and do a barium swallow the next am to make sure everything is working well.

What to expect at psych visit
Pittbull29 replied to ms.lady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just went for mine this morning. It was easy peasy. I had to take a 165 question test and return it before my appointment. It was called the MBMD or something. I looked it up on the internet and it helps your dr. know if you're going to be compliant after your surgery, what kind of patient you are (complain excessively, etc) and whether or not you're likely to sue them! It also asks questions that help identify if you're suicidal and stuff too. I was with the psych maybe 35-40 minutes. He reviewed medical history, family history etc. He made sure I understood how the LapBand worked and my expectations and that was about it. Good luck. -
What are PBing, slimeing, etc.
Pittbull29 replied to Pittbull29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks. There is so much info on here it's a little overwhelming.
