    RE: vomitting

i specifically asked my surgeon about that pre-band and he said if you are restricted and get sick (truly vomit) to call him immediatly (his office has answering service to reach him) leave a desctriptive message and they will either call you insomething to stop the vomiting, or if it is non-stop heaving got to the hospital and have fill removed! i will be going to the hosiptal he is at even though it is 1 hour away because i want him judging if the fill needs to come out not an er dr who may not know that much about the band or how to remove the fill.

    RE: vomitting

i have 'vomited' NOT PB'd since banding. Once. i was not restricted and stuff did come up, not alot and not fun. it happened because i was brushing my teeth and then my tongue, gagged, swallowed a tiny bit of toothpaste and that's all it took. like i said some did come up (nothing compared to how much was in there) but that is without restriction. it suprised me that i could eat as ch as i could but when i vomited only a tiny bit came out. i have since quit brushing my tongue. i have always been sensitive to swallowing toothpaste when gagging from brushing my tongue- then vomiting. now i just use mouthwash. at least that way no heaving! i agree that you MUST discuss this with your dr.

    pain survey

day 1-10 pain additional info 1- 7 more nauseated than in pain. SORE 2- 6 the joy at having the band eased my pain! 3- 7 reality check! to much activity on day 2! SORE and uncomfortable from the gas and irritable from having to sleep on my back or not sleep on my back 4- 5 still uncomfortable and tired but resting! 5- 6 i went to work this day. i was POOPED by the time i got home 6- 3 7- 3 8- 3 9- 3 10- 3 14- 5 this is the day i ran out of pain meds. I took every last drop. when i ran out i was in pain for 3 more days (sore). i think the meds took the edge off and without them... Dont be afraid to take them thats what they are for! i was fairly active after banding. i went to the store the day after(what was i thinking) day 6 and 7 i went grocery shopping as usual. (slower but i still managed to spend all my money!) i had the gas pains. could not burp to save my life so i was walking, stretching, getting massaged, and taking gas x the only think that worked was time! it wasnt so much pain as uncomfortable. the whole PAIN experience on a scale of 1-10 (10 highest) i would say my overall pain was like a 5-6. day 1 and 3 were the only ones i had the

    Hair loss

me too! i am so bad about not styling my hair. my cuts have to be wash and wear. i actually like having short hair i have a system (are you suprised??) i let my hair grow to where i have 12" to spare and cut it and donate to locks of love. then i enjoy having short hair while it grows out. it's like the best of both worlds! (as long as i dont have to style it!) this will be the 3rd donation when i cut my hair! i do know what you mean about hiding behind your long hair though. i have never had long hair and been thin or 'smaller'!! it always works out that when i cut it i am losing or starting a new diet. my plans are for whacking it off in the spring! no more buns!

  13. i have noticed when i first start to eat i have to take extra small bites if i dont i get the golf ball severe pain thing. it's weird because after the first bite or two i can eat without problems. my bandster twin is having this really bad and i told her i'd start a thread because i have heard people mention this before and wonder if their are any other tricks. (i of course couldnt find the posts that mention this!) my *twin* had her 3rd fill 2 weeks ago and is STILL on Soups. she doesnt want to give up any of her fill by having it removed. she is trying to wait and see if it loosens up any. but when she eats anything of substance she has the golf ball severe pain thing. she tried starting her meal last night with pudding to lube the throat but when she moved to chicken it was pain pain pain... any thoughts please! i had my 3rd fill yesterday and was still able to drink a whole can of Soup. i ate 1 cup of cottage cheese for Breakfast. 4th fill scheduled for 11-6.

    Having a very difficult time,

hey mello one, the first thing i said when i woke up from surgery was 'i feel like crying' the anesthesia dedfinitaly messes with your emotional state- and i completely thought what have i done to myself!!!! when i came off my pain meds i was in just as bad of pain as the first day i had surgery. i didnt realize all the pain the meds were taking away. what did they say at the er? if your dr doesnt know like donali said he needs/must know. please keep us posted on how your doing/feeling you know that we will all understand- you will be in my thoughts. when i ask people about the pain from childbirth i often hear 'it is the easiest pain to forget' the surgery was like that for me. i was pretty miserable (emotional and SORE not to mention gassy) but now looking back it's a faint memory and it was only 2 months ago!
  15. shellyj

    I'm BACK and banded!!!!

    BMI under 40

yes i have definitaly heard of people with bmi's of 35 and up. do you have any co-morbities...reflux, hernia, gerdx, sleep apnea, diabetes, heart disease etc... that will help. or if they are in your family history. there is a BMI calculator on this site. your BMI varies with your height so if you are 5'-2 3/4" you would be better off to say your height was 5'-2" dont round up on your height that will make your bmi go down! good luck! :D

  19. i copied this from the obesity help lapband forum.... To all of the squimish, this may be somewhat grahic. Read at your own risk  I am 10 days post-op. Today, I noticed a large lump under my largest incision. The one in the middle of my stomach where the band was placed. It is the size of a large chicken egg. I called my doctor's assistant. She told me it is a Seroma, which is an accumulation of Fluid. She explained that I need to break it up by making a fist, placing it on the lump, and and bending over into it. Also, I am supposed to massage it several times a day. This is supposed to essentially bust open the fluid filled sack, which in turn, will be reabsorbed into the body. She said not to worry if some of the fluid actually leaks out of the incision site. In fact, she said this would actually make it drain quicker. She explained that the liquid will be a brownish, 'tea-like' fluid. I forgot to mention that I took my stitches out today. Well, there I was massaging the lump this evening and the whole incision (about 2") opened up. EEEWW! There was no brownish liquid oozing out, just a little bright red blood. I poured quite a bit of hydrogen peroxide in the open wound, put on 2 butterfly band-aids and placed a larger band-aid over the whole thing in hopes that it will drain into that and not my clothes! Barbara told me that it should drain in about 3-7 days. I am just hoping that I am not going to get a bigger scar since it has reopened. Oh well, my bikini-wearing days are over anyway. I just thought I'd make my fellow Bandsters aware of this. Has anyone else experienced this or heard of it? i copied this from the obesity help lapband forum.... i hope this doesnt happen to many people BUT if it happens and you have read this at least you wont freak!!!! i know i would have! YUCK!!!:sick

    Bandster Death

i copied this from extraordinary bandsters Most of the time when we've had scares about deaths related to the band, it's turned out to be someone new posting to the boards trying to scare potential bandsters away from this as a weight loss surgery option. However, I think I've been around long enough so that I have some credibility and you'll believe and learn from this experience. We lost a bandster from my local group who was banded about a year ago in Mexico. Unfortunately, she had swelling from the beginning and was always tight, so she'd never had a flouro and never had a fill and had no band-related medical care after leaving her surgeon. A month ago she was admitted to the hospital because she couldn't keep anything down. She had x-rays, ultrasounds, even an endoscopy but unfortunately these were done by medical professionals who had no experience with the band. She had the Inamed medical card which she showed them and tried to explain about the band, but they did no follow-up with Inamed nor would they consult with any bariatric surgeons not affiliated with the hospital (much less the Mexican surgeon). By the time she got out of that hospital and under the care of a lap-band doctor, her stomach was septic and she had to have her band removed. Her band was at the bottom of her stomach! Unfortunately she also had a very bad respiratory infection, presumably the result of aspirating the reflux in to the lungs. The respiratory infection was too much for her and she died Saturday night. Normally the treatment for reflux is to have some (or all) of your fill removed and let the stomach heal for a while. But fill or no, it would be prudent to have a regular checkup of the band, especially if you are having reflux or pain that can't be associated to post-op healing. If you have any concerns, get them checked out either by a flouro or an ultrasound, but MAKE SURE THIS IS PERFORMED BY SOMEONE FAMILIAR WITH THE BAND and knows what they should be looking for. If you can't return to your surgeon, make sure you have some form of support - or at least a primary doctor who is willing to consult with a doctor performing lap band surgeries and is knowledgeable about potential complications. Deaths are incredibly rare with the band and most have been the same type of complications that can arise from any surgical procedure. This death could have been prevented with proper follow-up care. While complications are rare with the band, they can happen and need to be ruled out if you are having problems. Something else that I'd like to point out is that this occurred in the Pacific Northwest which has a plethora of banding surgeons when compared to the rest of the country. Unfortunately, most only treat their own patients unless it's an emergency. I know that there are several bandsters on this board who live in isolated areas and are a long ways away from a banding surgeon. Being close by didn't help this poor bandster because the medical team she had trusted weren't willing to consult with doctors even in the next county. Their arrogence and ignorance kept her from getting the timely care she needed when it was an emergency. But had she gone to one of the doctors willing to see other surgeon's patients BEFORE the symptoms were so severe, the outcome might have been much different. So please, make sure you have access to medical support that will take the risks associated with the band into consideration when they address any symptoms you might have. I really don't want to hear of any more deaths due to improper follow-up care. Please, please take care of yourself and your band. I still think it's the safest weight loss surgery available, but that doesn't help the family who is blaming the band for the loss of their mother. This certainly happens more frequently in the bypass community, but that's of little consolation right now to her loved ones.
