  1. I thought compression garments were worn by people who've had plastic surgery, namely Lipo suction and tummy tucks. Is there a benefit to wearing a compression suit after VSG? I would imagine that wearing one after losing lots of weight might help contain some of the loose skin...Somebody let me know so I can start savin up my pennies in case i need to get one!

Hello Everyone. I am having surgery in a few weeks. I am 4 ft. 11 in and weigh 205 lbs and my problem areas are my upper arms, stomach and thighs. I am thinking about purchasing a full-body compression suit to help me with these areas after my surgery. Has anyone had any experience with these? Any suggestions or comments is greatly appreciated.

  2. I saw a headline on the Yahoo! opening page about a paegant queen who lost over a hundred pounds before winning her crown recently. Before I even read the story, I already came to the conclusion that she had some sort of WLS. I skimmed through the article, looking for proof of my theory, but only saw something about "changing her diet" and "learning how to cook healthy foods" and "working out 30 - 60 mins a day". I dont believe the hype, but I've noticed now that since I've discovered WLS, I think everyone who's lost lots of weight has had some sort of procedure done. Recent celebs that come to mind are Jennifer Hudson, Raven Symone, and Jordin Sparks. Raven and Jordan didnt lose as much as Jennifer so I can believe that hiring a trainer and/or personal chef could be involved in their case, but I think JHud had a VSG. *dont judge me*

  3. Hey Lily!

Welcome to VST. What more can I say that hasnt been said already? I've had so many anxieties and fears calmed from reading the posts on this site and I'm sure it will be just as helpful to you too. I'm learning that there's truckloads of info available to us - I havent even looked into the recipes section yet, but it's great to know that when I am at that point of this process, I can just click into that forum and find just what I need.

Feel free to post anything, you're bound to have someone chime in and give you some encouraging, and positive advice/info.

  4. I dont have a date yet, I really just started the process with Lawrence about 3 weeks ago. I did my sleep study last night, and the tech gave me a thumbs up, meaning I should be diagnosed with apnea which should get me approved for surgery. I was worried because my BMI isnt quite at 40 and I dont have any co-morbs under my belt, so I was really counting on this apnea thing to come through. I've been trying to gain weight to up my BMI but that wasnt working out too well either...I would have to gain about 20 lbs to get it up to 40. Hopefully I'll be hearing back from Jane soon, I'd like to schedule my surgery for the beginning of September since I'll be on vacation from work.

KayyyBeee are you being sleeved by Dr. Roth at Lawrence? If so, when??

  5. Hey MThompson!

Welcome to the group, but most importantly, congrats on your sleeve! It seems alot of us are using the same hospital/surgeons. We can def compare notes...We'll be definitely asking lots of questions from those of you who are already sleeved. I'm still trying to get to where you are, keep your fingers crossed for me!

hello all new to the group just had my sleeve done june 29th 2011 from Harlem n y............. now living in bx parkchester area..... i was sleeved by dr silva in Bronx at Lawrence hosp in bronxville...

  6. Dr. Silva is definitely a veteran in the game and has several VSGs under his belt. I talked to Jane and told her that I was leaning toward Silva because of his experience, but she assured me that Dr. Roth is really good at what he does and that I would be in good hands with him.

    Hi,

Yeah I know I just made an appointment to meet w/ Dr Silva on Jul 21, he only works like 1 day a week. Not sure how soon the surgery is after that but I was hoping for 8/8/11. I feel more comfortable with Dr Silva, when I do a search on his name I get hits and people who have used him before, not so much with Dr Ross. But good luck with everything and I will definitely let you know how my journey is going!

  7. I'm so sorry to hear this! Isnt there an appeals process? Do you have any co-morbidities? Isnt there something your surgeon/hospital can send to the insurance co to show that you need this surgery to save your life? I cant imagine what you're going through. Some of these insurance companies are really unfair to it's customers. I'm with Brian; dont give up. Maybe you can switch insurance companies? I'm not sure if you're insured through your employer, but open enrollment season is usually in November; if your employer is offering different plans research all of them to see who covers WLS and what the stipulations are and then make the switch if possible.

  8. Awesome! Hope all goes well. I think I'm leaning towards Roth. I spoke with the Nurse Practitioner and she told me that Silva is booked through September and Roth's availability is alot more flexible. I hope to go through the process quickly enough that I can have a september surgery date as well. Lawrence is a nice, quaint hospital which is definitely up my alley.

Please be sure to keep in touch! We can definitely share notes.

    HI,

I'm also considering either Dr Roth or Dr Silva for my surgery. I'm from the Bronx but Lawrence is really close to me. I started my journey through an online seminar, then had my first appt with the Center for advanced surgery on May 13. I've had all of my testing done, just waiting on cardiac clearance, my final nurtrionist appt is in July. I can't wait I hope all goes well and I can have my surgery in Aug. I've heard mixed reviews with Aetna.

  9. Hey Diane!

Sorry to hear about your complications, but happy to hear you're on your way to Wellville. I hate to be nosey, but would you mind sharing with us what your complications were? It may help some of us pre-ops out in the long run.

Welcome to the group! Boogie Down in the building!

Hi this is MsDW59 - Diane NY representing the Boogie Down Bronx! Was sleeved "with some complications" on 6/13 and currently on the road to wellville!

  10. I originally started this Quest by attending an info session at NYU Langone Medical Center in the city. I've since changed my plan and am now hoping to have my surgery done by Dr. Aaron Roth OR Dr. Miguel Silva (still deciding, dont judge me). They both are affiliated with Columbia Presbyterian's Advanced Center for Surgery and they work out of Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY which is conveniently close to home for me.

Empire BC/BS is my insurance company, I'm praying that things go smoothly with them and the approval process.
