Scared and worried about the first month post op
imawhodat posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm petrified about surgery. I know this will be a wonderful gift for myself and my family. I'm just so scared about the first month post op. I'm so worried about it, I keep forgetting the end goal...which is I will hopefully be 100lbs lighter. I'm scared I'll never be able to eat again and will have to live on protein shakes/liquids forever. I keep telling myself this is highly unlikely, but I can't get my brain to let go of the fear. I've watched tons of youtube vids and see everyone doing great a month out so that should reassure me. Anyone else dealt with this kind of fear? I know the change will be huge and I just hope I handle it well cause there is no going back once its done. -
South East Louisiana and South Mississippi Sleevers
imawhodat replied to imawhodat's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I met Dr. Redmann yesterday and I feel extremely comforable using him. He was my sister n laws gastric bypass surgeon and she has done great, and at least 7 of her co-workers have used him for their surgery in the past year, without any complications. After meeting him I'm at ease with his skill as a surgeon and his bedside manner. I know I'll be in good hands. Their aftercare is wonderful. Dr. Avara in Ocean Springs, MS also comes highly recommended. I know 2 people that have used him and they have been very pleased. Auburn1159 where are you located? You can view their website www.whyweight.com . Its very informative and each surgeon has uploaded a brief introduction video of themselves. -
Day 9- things are looking up
imawhodat replied to meggiep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so glad things are looking up for you -
I'm hungry. I do a shake and an hour and half later I'm starving. My blood sugar is also getting really low which makes me hungry. I believe I'm going to have to back off the diabetes meds now. I meet with the surgeon tomorrow to sign consents...and I BET I haven't lost any weight. I feel bloated and TMI I'm PMSing. Not a good time to get on the scale. Maybe he won't be too upset. I'm not having surgery til June so that gives me some time to loose some weight. They said to shoot for 10lbs. Just enough to get my liver in shape apparently. I would, however, like to loose more pre-op. Rant over

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try to not limit myself to just the protein shakes. I'm allowed two "meals in a box" ie: Smart Ones each day, but that isn't enough. Normally I don't have such a ravenous appetite. I reduced the insulin last night and am cutting dose of oral blood sugar med today (per MD order). I meet with the surgeon today and I'm praying to get a surgery date for late next week. Thanks again

Day 8- Heaven opened and the angels sang
imawhodat replied to meggiep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yay for soup!! I hope this will make your recovery easier. -
Its not pure liquid (THANK GOD). I can have 2 Smart Ones each day along with Protein shakes. I'm pretty sure the drop in blood sugar is what is causing the insane hunger. I checked Blood Glucose and it was 60...way too low. When it gets that low I get crazy hungry. I ate a popscicle (NOT Sugarfree) and feel 100% better

I'm having surgery soon...like within the month and I'm trying to prepare myself for "Hell Week" and beyond. Please share your experiences with post op pain and nausea. Which was worse and how long did it last? I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to pain and an even BIGGER wimp dealing with nausea. Thanks

Glad to hear things went well for you both! Congrats

A friend of mine uses the peanut butter flavoring. She LOVES it. I plan on getting some this week to add to my shakes.

I have finally found a shake I like. Years ago I used these to loose about 30lbs. They taste pretty good and the chicken flavor is really yummy. You can order them at chocolate reminds me very much of a Wendy's frosty without that funky Protein taste. Leanne

Need to buy good Scales....any recommendations?
imawhodat posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I desperately need a new set of scales. What I have now is a Health-o-meter Digital. Maybe I should stay away from the digital and get the old school kind. I can weigh myself 3 different times within a few minutes and it will be around a 5lb difference. This will make me crazy lol! -
Need to buy good Scales....any recommendations?
imawhodat replied to imawhodat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you everyone for your responses. My scale measured me 30lbs heavier then 5 mins later I weighed 10lbs lighter! LOL I even replaced the battery to see if that would help. -
I'm having sugery next month with a Lousiana surgeon. If you don't mind me asking you did you use? Your post op plan sounds alot like mine.

Meet with surgeon Wednesday...and get my date! YIKES!!
imawhodat posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let's hope the food funeral I've been on for the past two weeks hasn't caused me to gain weight! LOL I meet with my surgeon Wednesday to sign consents and get my date. It's so amazing to me that something I've prayed about, wanted, wished for the past two years is finally happening. I had my mother take my measurements this evening. Bust, waist and hips are all 51 1/2......can you say HEART ATTACK waiting to happen???? I think tonight I'm going to list my fears and then I'm going to list what I'm going to look forward to be able to doing. Maybe putting pen to paper will help me process all of this. Leanne -
This post brought tears to my eyes. I am struggling with the same feelings. My 3 teenage kids know I'm having surgery and are excited for me. My 7 year old is excited as well...her words "I want to have a healthy mama, but I love you no matter what." I have a 3 year old and the thought of something happening to me terrifies me. I've had several surgeries, some pre-kids and of course I had anxiety, but somehow having children ampliflies that fear of something happening. I had thyroid surgery last summer and went through these feelings, so I should be over it by now. Know you are not alone in feeling this way. Having this surgery is a huge change in our lives but its one that will be such a wonderful gift to ourselves and our kids. Hugs Leanne

Starting Modified Pre-Op Liquid Diet
imawhodat posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I bought from Wal-Mart Professional Strength whey Protein Plus Elite Series triple chocolate flavor. Calories 160 total fat 2g Total Carb 8g Fiber .5g Sugars 3g Protein 26g Says can be mixed with Water or skim milk. Granted the skim milk will add calories/fat etc. Has anyone tried this before? My doctor wants me to use shakes to supplement meals. I can have 300 calorie high protein meals twice a day. My goal is to loose 10lbs before surgery. I'm finally DONE with the food funeral. Its time to get serious. I just needed some time to prepare myself mentally for what I'm about to do. My son is leaving for Europe June 1 for ten days. He is 17 and will require me to help him pack etc. I'm not sure if I should have the surgery before he leaves or wait until after. I feel like if I have it before I might not be of much help to him getting him ready to go. I dunno, I know its kind of a weird thing to post, but its one of the things the is a huge factor in deciding my surgery date. I'm lucky in the fact my 2 teenage daughters will be out of school this week and are more than willing to help me with aftercare and helping to take care of my younger children (ages 7 &3) while I recover. My husband is also a gem and is willing to do whatever needs to be done. My gut/intuition tells me June 6. Guess I will see what my doctor says. Leanne -

I'm having surgery PROBABLY next month. For some reason I'm eating every SINGLE thing that crosses my mind. Its getting ridiculous. It's like Last Supper X 10. Did anyone else do this? My surgeon doesn't require for me to loose a certain amount before surgery but would be happy if I lost around 10. I also need to exercise. I'd like to loose around 20lbs and be able to walk a mile easily before surgery, so maybe the post op won't be so hard. What's funny (or not) is before I met with the surgeon I really didn't eat much at one time..I was a snacker. But now I'm having pretty big meals. Its like with each meal I'm saying goodbye to it. I know I'll be able to eat again. Has anyone gone through something like this?

Got my funding.....Now to figure it all out
imawhodat replied to biggriz's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Congrats! As a fellow self payer I understand. I got my money to have the surgery rather suddenly and unexpectedly. I'd wanted to have it done for the past 2 years but never thought it would happen. Now that it is about to happen I'm freaking out a bit as well! -
One step closer and help from WLS mommys
imawhodat posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well according to my "homework" list all I have left to do is get my PCP's medical release. She's been gently suggesting this surgery to me for the past year, so I'm guessing that it won't be a problem to get. Let me just say I go from "hell no I'm not doing this to my body" to "this is going to be such a wonderful thing for myself and family". The rollercoaster of emotions is wearing me down. I've become totally obsessed with visiting online forums and watching YouTube videos. I want to know everything I can about it....Good Bad & Ugly. I think I made a mistake yesterday by telling my 7 year old daughter a bit about the surgery. Let me go back and say she is so worried about my weight and I think it really bothers her. A kid at her school told her "You have a fat mama" last week......broke my heart..tore it up. I'm not the person I want to be...I have zero energy....and I know its for the best to go ahead with the surgery. Anyway, she saw my Protein drinks in the fridge and wanted to drink them. I had to tell her those were my special drinks I need before my surgery, but I'd be glad to get her something else. She said "Just what are they going to do to your stomach anyway?". I was lost for words...I didn't want to totally freak her our...so I just said "well, they are going to reduce the size of mommy's tummy so I can eat less and be healthy." Of course she wanted more details....so I told her they would remove a portion of it. Her eyes got big as saucers.....then she promptly said "Well, if its going to make you healthy then go for it"! Since then she has been asking lots of questions...the first one being "Maybe you can just go on a diet and loose the weight then you won't have to have the surgery??" Oh how I wish it were that easy. Maybe I shouldn't of said anything to her, but I feel that its important for my kids to know whats going to be happening. All of my kids are very healthy. I've been uber paranoid that my kids would/will have a weight problem so I make sure they have healthy meals and Snacks. I just pray they don't end up like me...on insulin @ 37..oral diabetes meds for 4 years..and 100lbs overweight. Fellow parents, how did your kids react to your surgery? Has your lifestyle change been hard on them? Thanks -
I'm using Dr. Redmann. Don't know if he is the best or not, but I've heard nothing but good things about him. He performed my sister n laws gastric bypass and she has done incredibly well. He's near N.O.
