6kiddos replied to BZButterfly79's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
beef broth vegie broth cream of wheat yogurt (fat free, etc) a mesh stainer (I have a small one so I can strain yogurt, etc) small 1 cup bowls (I got ziploc ones) for MY food milk of magnesia (in case you get constipated) pepto bismo (break through heartburn) blistex Protein powder. (I really like unjury...but make sure you order enough!) calcium (I have the liquid from costco..Revival?) non-slip socks/slippers jammies. (I LOVE to hang out in jammies!) -
Unfortunately I really haven't gotten "down" time. I was really hoping for it..but life didn't stop just for me. I did get a quilt pieced for my ds3 though.

I am so with you here. I tend to do this at times anyway....but I really DO need to sleep!

Average hospital stay ( in states)
6kiddos replied to myrori's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery at 3:30 pm on Tuesday and went home at 1 pm on Wednesday. -
I came home with an acid blocker and something for nausea. I only had to take it for a few days and then I was fine. It will get better. =) I also found that at first I was taking what I THOUGHT were small sips...but I had to do micro-sips instead. g/l

I have been doing pretty well after being sleeved on the 9th. My parents left on Sunday...so I have had a lot more to get done this week. I haven't done my normal...but probably more than I should have. Anyway, my pain was getting better everyday, which is good. Then, Thursday I had Student of the Month assembly for dd and a Thanksgiving program for ds4. Yesterday I had to take dd in for her allergy shots (had to take ds5...3 yrs old with us). When I got home, I was TIRED and sore. I have the burning pain on the left side where my pain had been before. I would say it hurts about like it did on Monday/Tuesday. I actually took the max dose of vicodin last night. This morning it hurts just as much. Did I pull something? Did I just overdo it? Not good since ds2 has a Jazz Band concert this morning AND my sister is coming over today with her 2 kiddos (ages 5 and 2). Sigh. I am thinking vicodin may be my friend today. I had weaned mostly off it. Would you be worried? Oh...one more question. Does anyone else wake with heartburn?? I am taking Protonix once a day already. Is it that I need to eat?

I think I overdid it. =(
6kiddos replied to 6kiddos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am really feeling like I just pulled something wrong. I have a sharp pain ONLY when I am moving or sit wrong. If I am still or up for a little while it doesn't really hurt that much at all. I am thinking I will give it until Monday and if it is still bad I will call the Dr then. -
I am wanting some more variety. I have had a lot of cream of whatever Soups, yogurt, malt-o-meal. I also had some broth from homemade chicken Soup. That was great! =) I have been thinking...maybe broth from wonton soup? Maybe potato soup from Claim jumper? (strained of course) Do these sound ok? Anything else? Thanks. =)

Mine was at 3:30. I just kept busy with things I needed to get done. The worst part is that you cannot eat/drink anything after midnight the night before (I found out I could have early in the morning...but no one told me that!) I was dehydrated (had done a bowel prep the day before) so they tried several times for the IV. The anest. had to get it in my wrist and then put in another "better" one once I was out. Not fun! This happens to me all the time though. ugh. Good luck. Just keep busy. =)

Reality is slapping me pretty hard this morning...
6kiddos replied to BonnieJuneE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I actually like the unjury drinks. I mix them with just Water...even the chocolate Splendor (like hot choc to me). Since surgery (1 week out) I have used 6 oz of water to 1 1/4 scoops to up the Protein in smaller liquids. (had trouble getting it all in at first so was trying to up the protein in smaller amts). I use the Centrum chewable Vitamins which are ok. I also use the liquid Calcium from costco. I love the taste of it! It is called Revival (I think). How exciting for you! Take a deep breath...all will go great! -
prescription Omeperazole...break them?
6kiddos posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does anyone know if you can break the capsule of prescription Omeperazole? The pill is uncomfortable to get down and I would love to mix it is with my liquid Calcium. Thanks! -
I had the choice of Nov 9th (with a TWO week notice) or the week of Thanksgiving. I probably could have gone later into December too...BUT I knew I wanted this, I knew the holidays might be hard but I didn't need the junk, I knew I HAD to do this THIS year because of ins. (already hit ded. of 5k so it was 100% covered!). I opted to do it Nov 9th. Very quick but I was ready. I will probably be able to have little bites of SOME things here and there when I can eat "real" food. That is ok....I don't NEED to eat it all. =) We are better off financially because of the 2010 date and I am losing weight. I honestly think the hardest thing for me to figure out is whether I will be up to singing or not for the holidays. LOL. I have really taken to heart when the pych said about finding a "replacement" for my food addiction. I have worked on sewing more, quilting, etc. I have to find outlets for myself that are healthier. =) I am also going to start walking with my kids more. Good luck in your decision.

In my Quest for information from those who have been there...I spoke with MANY who had WLS. (mostly bypass and band). While many have regained...they are nowhere NEAR where they were (anywhere from 5-20+ yrs out). While I want to maintain....I do NOT see them as failures. They are better off than they were before because of the lower weight. This does prove to me that I have to USE the tool I now have. It is up to ME. In the long run, I want to be healthier for my family and myself.

I was sleeved on the 9th. I have had the same issues. Yesterday was MUCH better for me. I actually got about 30 oz down! woohoo! I have been making my shakes with just Water and then adding extra powder to them for more Protein. This helped up the protein for me. I felt much better yesterday. =) I also have been doing micro-sips to get the fluids down. I am constantly doing these sips and they add up. The only thing I take a little bigger sip of is the medicine..YUCK. I cannot microsip that thing! I just have to get it down, shiver with disgust, etc. LOL. Good luck. It does get better! I just keep telling myself...two weeks and most people feel better. =)

I am with Feed....I would not have done an RNY. BUT I also have to take NSAIDS for my TMJ on a daily basis. (currently I am not taking them because I within a week of surgery and I can really tell the difference.)

I am trying to find a reasonably priced Chewable calcium citrate. Any suggestions? I am supposed to take 1200-1800 mg/day.
-
I read the ingredients yesterday and it is NOT calcium citrate. Any other suggestions anyone? I need to get some ordered. I go in on Tuesday and until then I am taking my normal pill...but after I cannot do that. Thanks!
-
I know how you all feel. I am on day 8 of the liquid diet. Tuesday is the BIG day for me. I had EXACTLY two weeks from schedule time to surgery date. Yeah...fast. I took the earliest opening they had. (the next one was the week of Thanksgiving). So...no farewell food tour for me. I went right on the pre-op diet the next day. A little sad...but it won't be forever. I cannot BELIEVE how good a hot dog looked today when I was making them for my kids.

Gastric Sleeve Experts... Please Chime In!
6kiddos replied to lillita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I met with a nurse today (having surgery next week!). She said "average" for the first month is 5-10 lbs....BUT then she said most people she sees far exceed that the first month. So...it is JUST averages. Don't get discouraged. -
So I have been on the pre-op Liquid Protein diet since Wed. I have lost TEN lbs so far! I am stunned. I have surgery scheduled on the 9th. How much have you all lost on the pre-op diet?

Struggling with liquid diet
6kiddos replied to Monday_thru_Friday's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am with you on this one. I am doing pretty well so far. BUT I am finding I am waking in the night hungry. I have been on it since Tuesday. The weight loss has been great (10 lbs!) but I am quickly tiring of Protein shakes. I still have to make dinner for the family which is hard. Yesterday my kids came home from church wanting to make treats for other families. So...we had brownies AND Cookies in the house AND halloween candy! I did well and didn't have any but it was hard. Hang in there. You are not alone. broth will quickly become your friend. -
tiffnie - I know low carb can be hard. There are some great recipes out there to help though. Try some lowcarb forums like http://forum.lowcarber.org/. They have a whole section on recipes. I got a Thai chicken salad from there years ago and it was and still is a staple in our home. I have to agree that baby steps are good. =) cielle - it hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. The hardest part is that after I found out I was approved I called to schedule. Well, they happened to have an opening on the 9th or the week of Thanksgiving. So, I took the 9th. That meant I had to start the liquid diet the NEXT day. I really wanted to go out with hubby for a "last meal" so to speak....but things were just too busy. (think 6 kids and activities, etc) I just keep telling myself that it is ok and I WILL be able to eat again....just not yet. Maybe Christmas?? Good Luck. If you have not tried Protein Shakes, try several and be prepared. I have liked unjury best.

I wanted to add about the Pyloric valve. My mother had the bypass 22 yrs ago. (not sure if it is exactly the same...but has the pouch/new pyloric). She has gained..but is about 60 lbs below her high weight. BUT when she recently had a gi done..they said there is nothing there to keep the food IN her pouch anymore. She feels full when her intestine is filled to a point AND her pouch. The valve is stretched out. I personally don't want this and I have to take NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aleve, etc) for my TMJ so I am not a candidate for RNY. Good luck in the decision. =)

I just found out today that Aetna approved my surgery for outpatient. Has anyone had this? Did it go ok? I am going to try and have the dr. do the peer to peer to try and get inpatient. I am worried about coming home to 6 kiddos the same day as the surgery. y'know? Thanks for input and experiences!

I scheduled with them today! My date is Nov 9th! It was either that or Nov 22nd. aaahhh! I am excited and nervous all at once! I start the pre-op diet tomorrow! wow...just wow.
