Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Good Morning Violets! Couldn't sleep. Ok, so I went to see my mom for dinner last night and she wanted Mexican food. So we sit down and they bring tortilla chips. Nope, not gonna have one of those! I ordered tortilla soup, Mom ordered tamales....she says they're wonderful. Well I can never find a good restaurant tamale so I'm curious now...and I figure they're mushy, right? So I take a small bite and chew it very well. Goes down fine. BUT WAIT!!! Suddenly I'm feeling a bit nauseous and slime is beginning to form rapidly in my throat. CRAP!!! SHIT!!! DAMN!!! (Mom doesn't know I'm banded. She'd only worry.) Sit there and panic...but only for a minute...because now I'm desperate to make a run for the bathroom. But DAMN! my quads hurt from doing all those *%&$^& lunges!! so I can barely get up and walk. I excuse myself saying with a mouthful of slime, "I'm jush ghunna hash cha gho to zsa vashroom...." Just as I close the bathroom stall door I violently vomited twice!! This is what I call a PB DeLuxe!!! Another food off the list. Thank goodness I still had brothy soup waiting for me. There were huge chunks of that evil, evil chicken in there and lots of crunchy veggies...but I ate around those you can be sure of that. Packed up the good stuff to bring back home to DH. Thankfully my mom is 'not all there' and does not notice a lot of things. Things I can't eat/get stuck on?? TAMALES dry chicken deli meat anything fried pizza crust fruit peels nuts, unless I chew the heck out of 'em watermelon beef, unless it's filet mignon or jerky (!) soft part of bread (sometimes) flour tortillas eggs (don't try them often, got stuck bad 2-3 times) .... that's all for now; I'm quite sure I'll be adding to the list!! Ya'll have a good day. Day 4!! yea!!!

Oh, Kat! I'm a VERY good thrower-outer!!! Wish I could be there to help!! Thanks for the kudos on the Quit. I'm hanging. Today is much better than the last 2, but still not easy. Haven't heard from Sara!? Not a good sign. Michelle - Yeah, I used to love chicken! (LOL Tracy) I'm a big fish fan now!! Used to hate fish! <sigh> Were you trying to swallow all that slime or were you spitting it out?? Swallowing it will only cause more pain, y'know. (Well, you do NOW!) Most important thing now is like Kat said: liquids and mushies ONLY for the next 2-3 days!! Otherwise you will most likely have another PB, and another, and another....until you go on liquids! Might as well get it over with. I have tried the paypaya enzymes, BTW, and they work very well to get things unstuck. TracyKS - I've been slacking too...all week! I did a zillion lunges on Sunday and haven't been able to WALK ever since! OMG. I had a ear/throat infection of some sort AND on top of that I wasn't smoking. I was like, "To hell with it all" and didn't give a rat's a$$. Still don't. Legs still hurt anyway. I AM NEVER DOING ANOTHER LUNGE EVER. This is the 4th time they've done this to me. No more lunges. Ever. Tonight I have to visit my mom. I'll be back at the gym tomorrow. I'll try to be happy about it. Laura - I've seen you post a few times that you're eating late at night. You better be careful, girlfriend, you're gonna end up with reflux and you do NOT want that. No eating anything within 3 hours of bedtime, ok? I want you to stay healthy as possible. Maybe have a glass of milk to take the edge off...it's good for you, too!! Major congrats on the huge drop in sizes!!! That's incredible! Haydee - How'd your lunch hold you? If you're starving like that again (like at 11:00a) just have a small piece of cheese or 10 almonds! I promise that will get you thru to lunch. No point in starving like that...besides, it makes you want to wolf down your lunch and that's the path straight to PB-ville, baby.

Ok, I'm back from my fill. She put in .5cc!!! Ooooooooooo, I'm gonna be tight!!! I'm at 2.8cc now!! They also showed I lost 6# in 8 weeks. That's not what my scale shows!! Whatever...It's not enough! I showed her the picture of that brown spot by my port scar that I had after last fill (remember that?)....she was mystified too. BUT all my fill was still there from last time, so it's not leaking and that was my main concern.

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

OH!! I have terrible trouble with those things too!!! I think mine are 'whole grain' wheat thins and I eat 6-7 with my tuna for lunch sometimes. I get pain with those things every time! I just thought it was the way I was eating or whatever. They go in the trash now!!...they weren't very good anyway. The important thing is that you are tracking them!! This really helps you to make better choices. Just keep tracking!! I would have done the same thing. It's not such a bad choice in your situation...you were probably damn hungry! Got a little calcium in the deal too. But NO MORE!!! :heh: ...and I trust you're using good products too? Nothing too heavy, like gel. Bumble & Bumble make a great 'volumizer' spray...see if your salon carries it. Sebastian hair spray is awesome. I'd be lost without those two products. OK, peeps...I'm on Day 3 of my quit. Feeling a bit better today. I go for a fill at lunchtime and I'm really bracing for some major restriction. I just feel I'm right on the edge of being loose one day and tight the next...I can't decide if I really need a fill, but I'm gonna go for it and see what happens. I'm going to be a model bandster the next two weeks for sure. OH!! And I had a major bandster revelation yesterday!!! Just because you CAN put away 1 to 1.5 cups of food, doesn't mean you SHOULD!! Let me clarify: I had gotten a SB frozen meal for lunch yesterday. I generally HATE any kind of frozen dinner but I was in a crunch. I nuked it when I got back to the office then ended up eating only about 1/2 of it....it was disgusting....and I injested about 150 calories worth of chicken and broccoli. I remained satisfied until 5:00! Ok, so what was my lesson here? 1) I don't need to feel the food backing up into my esophagus before I consider myself 'done eating'. 2) My instrux are to eat 1/2-3/4 cup of food at one sitting (regardless of if I feel 'full' or not) and that is what I need to do!!! (It's a RULE, dammit) Now, of course, this is totally contrary to the way I've trained myself to eat for the last 49 years and it will take a conscious effort to stop waiting for that full feeling and just follow the rule of 1/2 - 3/4 c of food. I simply need to stop overserving myself. If I am in a restaurant, I need to ask for the to-go box FIRST and load up the extra before I even begin my meal. This is good stuff. I'm posting this to my journal. I wish I could tatoo it on my arm!!
  7. My God, Kat! How in the world have you turned out to be such a warm and loving individual? Un-freaking-believable. I am at a loss for words.

    Scared to death

Uh...YEAH!! Like everybody HERE!! Only you know what's right for you and I am not familiar with the complications asthma brings into the picture so I won't advise you one way or the other there. But I will tell you that we all went thru those fears. I just kept reading posts here and realized that all these people pushed thru their fears and came out the other side exclaiming about how much they love their bands! I just bit my lip and went through with it. Super glad I did!!

    A few questions about restriction

I can answer your third question... yes, it should ease up a bit over the next few days as long as you don't irritate it by eating foods that get stuck. Sounds like you are pretty tight so take it real easy with risky foods. I find that this severe restriction goes away after about 10-12 days (but that's me). If yours doesn't ease up after 2 weeks, see your doctor. You can't live on 1 cup of food a day and get the nutrients you need.
  10. I felt that way at first then I realized a few things: 1) Everyone is too busy with their own workouts to really pay attention to other people 2) They are probably proud of you for being there (I am when I see overweight people there) 3) If I value myself I will go in spite of "what others might think". I am doing this for ME and I am proud of myself for being there and working hard. 4) There are LOTS of overweight people at the gym....probably 60% of them are! I fit right in! 5) Being embarrassed is too flimsy of an excuse. Really....just go. When you start to feel stronger and healthier you will be so motivated to do more that you really won't care about anyone else there. I promise!!

Haydee - You are so beautiful. (violets -- she's even more beautiful in person than in her picture!) I like the pic in your signature too...leave it there! Well, carbs are a funny thing, y'know...there's good ones and bad ones. If you need to know about good/bad carbs, let me know and I'll give you a little lesson. If you only eat good carbs and keep them under 75g a day you're doing real well. The (old) food pyramid calls for something like 300g of carbs!! So you can see that 75 would be very good. Strict low carb diets limit them to 35-40g a day but that's very hard to do. Tracy, my hair is pretty thick. It's also very straight. I wish you lived over here... I have a great new stylist. Over the years I've learned that you get what you pay for (usually) when it comes to haircuts. TracyKS - I'm glad you're feeling better!! Yuck! so what are you gonna 'do' now? Wonder What Judy is Doing now? Pamela - New day tomorrow?? How'd u do today? I'll let you know how I did in a minute...gotta go run over to www.dailyplate Sara-- How you doin' quit buddy? I've been so cranky, but OK.

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Well, that's the best I can suggest anyway. Why don't you give it a try? If you're hungry at 10:30a or so, eat a small piece of cheese or a few almonds, rather than anything carby. Keep snacks small...a little goes a long way. I think if you keep the carbs low, especially in the morning, you may start to notice a difference.

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

For those of you having trouble being hungry because of breakfast, please take it from me...I've been regulating my blood sugar and related hunger for 30 years and the reason you are getting hungry is: 1) You are eating too many carbs 1st thing in the morning. 2) Starting off with a carby breakfast will set you up for extra hunger for the rest of the day, stimulates more carb cravings which will then result in the vicious hunger cycle. This is why we're told PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN!! I looked at Haydee's breakfast as an example Amount per ServingCalories 185 Calories from Fat 65 Total Fat 8g Carbohydrate 24g Dietary Fiber 4g Sugars 15g Protein 4 Est. Percent of Calories from: Fat 38.9% Carbs 51.9% Protein 8.6% You should be shooting for about 20g of protein at every meal...and you see this doesn't come close. 24g of carbs and 15g of sugar would do me in for the morning. For 'normal' people it merely makes them hungry! See? I regulate my hunger with protein and I'm not a big fan of "low fat" anything...fat helps the protein stay with me longer and prolongs hunger. Carbs? Yeah, I'm afraid of those! My breakfast had 17g protein, 8g fat and 16g of carbs, 2g fiber. (Cottage cheese 4%fat, raspberries, & a bit of granola for fiber). I ate at 8:00a, and I'm just now eating lunch at 1:22p, with little hunger in between. Just food for thought!

No, you don't want to do what I'm doing!! I'm not losing! Haven't lost a pound in almost a month. One thing I have been religious about is not eating 3+ hours before bedtime. I want to avoid ANY chance of reflux problems!!! I'm also strict about not drinking during or 1/2 hour+ after meals. Also, I always get in my 64 oz of fluids.

I'm in the same boat, Pamela. I'm committing to a new goal today of staying below 1000 calories at least for the rest of August. Faithfully tracking my cals on Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and being brutally honest. I did that for yesterday's calories and found I ate 1250 calories. OH, and then I remembered those peanut M&M's I shoved into my mouth mindlessly and had to add another 250 cals!...making my total 1500+ for the day. That's not gonna cut it. Will you join me??

G'Morning all! Kat= I was about to send the police out looking for you! Jeez-o-man, I wonder how many calories you burned last week??? I'd be in the hospital if I had to do all that! Tell Rick that next time he gets a week off you want to go to Bermuda or something! That's NO vacation! LOL I am SO grateful to have Chantix to lean on. I never, never could quit cold turkey...that's why I could never quit before these drugs came out. I quit in 2003 with Wellbutrin and now with Chantix. Cold turkey is just too hard for me. Sara's going cold turkey today, ya'll, so please give her lots of support!! (We're quit buddies and emailing back and forth.) I'm very grouchy today. Thank goodness nobody is here at the office and it's a quiet day. When I told DH I quit smoking yesterday, he said "Oh." He abhores my smoking. You'd think I'd get a little more support than that, eh?

Jen & Tracy - Congrats to you both!! Life is good!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm hanging in there. I have an earache, my quads are killing me from doing lunges yesterday, I'm hungry (but I'm already at 1000 cals for the day) and I'm cranky as hell. Other than that, I'm fine.

    Sliming A lot

Thinatlast: You have to keep in mind that we eat at least 3x a day, every day. That's over 1000 meals a year x 30 bites/meal (?)....that's 30,000 opportunities to screw up and take too big of a bite or not chew well enough or eat slowly. I don't have issues every time I eat, but right after a fill you have to kinda start over again getting to know your band...'cuz it's a whole new day! It takes a week or two of tweaking then it's alright again. If you keep having trouble then you start to wonder if you need an unfill or what to do?! That's when you see people posting problems on the board. You don't hear about all the thousands and thousands of people NOT having problems! Yes, issues will occur, but they are generally not long-lasting.

    Breathing Deeply

Ditto what Trystelle said. You will find that taking the deep breaths, in spite of the pain, will reduce it in the long run. The first breath or two is hard, then it gets easier. I did about 5 or more at a time, every 2 hours.

Pamela & Michelle - Thanks for all the words of encouragment AND the bananas!! :car: Pamela -- you need a new avatar! Yours is too tiny and I can't see who I'm talkin' to!! Surely ya'll took a million pics this summer! Can't believe summer's almost over! The good news is that means an eventual end to this miserable hot weather. The bad news is that Christmas is coming. (Yes, I am a card-carrying hard-core Scrooge.)

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Thanks, Tracy...no, it's not the medication. I've only been taking it a few days and it's not known to have weight gain/loss issues. Neither is the anti-depressant I'm taking. Prozak is the one that is notorius for weight stalls; I don't take that. It's just my slow metabolism! Thankfully I have my old LC journal still online and this is just my pattern: stall for weeks, lose a few pounds, stall for weeks, lose a few pounds...etc. I can't believe how you are just losing like a maniac now!! You're a FILL believer now, arent you?!
  24. TerriDoodle

    Sliming A lot

Ragdoll - Have you tried strictly liquids for a day or two? Give your tummy a rest and see if that helps....then try again and if you're still having problems I'd consider a slight unfill. I'm heading for a fill on Wednesday and have the feeling I'm gonna have the same problems as you for a couple of weeks. Hope you're better soon.

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

WOW! Everyone is just doing so great!!! I'm so proud of all of you, and I have to admit...a little bit jealous. Judy - I hope you catch this before you leave...I know you've been looking forward to this trip for a long time! I know ya'll will have a wonderful time...enjoy every minute and recognize all of the reasons to celebrate! I am facing quite a challenge here in the next few weeks. And I gotta let you all know what's going on so that you can help me when I start whining!! That's your job, right? :car: Ok, so here's the story: Back in the fall of 2003 I quit smoking, started menopause and fell off the low-carb wagon. Triple Whammy DeLuxe. I went from 158-200# in about 18 months. I was pretty frantic but nothing I did helped with the weight. At some point my screwed up, desperate brain decided it would be OK to start smoking again to help control my weight....so I ruined my quit. It did help slow down my weight gain...but now, of course, I have to deal with quitting again. I've been taking Chantix (a new drug to help you quit) and it's working pretty well. Today is my first day without cigarettes and so far, so good. The REASON I mention all this stupid stuff is that I kind of expect over the next few weeks to be a tad bit cranky, maybe a little depressed, I'll probably even have MORE of a struggle losing weight, and might even gain! I'm going to try real hard to keep it under control and just DO what I need to DO, but I don't know if I have it in me without the crutch of cigarettes. We'll see. So, wish me luck on all fronts!! Ultimately I'm really hoping that with improved lung capacity I can kick up my cardio workouts...but that'll just help me 'break even' metabolically. It could be a rough ride. <sign> :help:
