Dr. Almanza
massindex replied to harleychic1383837815's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had mine done there and just got back with my son having his done there. I really do recommend it. It is a strip mall, as said above, so understand that going in. The operating room is just like any other operating room though and the care from the nurses is much better. -
The Pool at the Marriott in TJ
massindex replied to Italiancurves's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I just got back from TJ yesterday (traveling with my son). It's been in the low 80s during the day. It was very nice. Supposed to be that way for at least the next 10 days. -
My resting heart rate is now 46 but I work out a fair amount. It can be a concern in certain situations depending on your health primarily for the anesthesiologist. They can raise it but they may just want to check it again.

I had absolutely nothing left in the tank about 1.5 miles from the finish and collapsed. If they had helped me, it wouldn't have counted so a woman came out from the crowd and started yelling at me to get up with a Philippino accent . It actually made me laugh and she said "Good. Now go finish." I managed to chuckle the rest of way in just thinking about it. It took my mind off of it, that's for sure. I got some IV fluids and a massage at the end before I went back to the hotel. Funny thing was that I couldn't really sleep long and I was back up only a few hours later. I was kind of in a state of delirium. I didn't want to do anything but feel what I had accomplished. It's something no one can take away from me. I'm actually thinking of getting a tattoo as a reminder of the event (mind you I'll be 60 in a few years and never thought of getting one before, so that is pretty funny to those near to me).

It's a full triathlon - 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles on bike and 26.2 miles sort of running in 16 hours.

Does 140.6 miles in one day count?

How bad was it? Would you do it again?
massindex replied to extracat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please. Short pain for long term gain? No question, yes. The pain lasted periodically for a few weeks, mostly gas related, and got better when I got off my duff and walked. -
suffering tremendously..
massindex replied to imsuga's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If it's shoulder pain, it's probably gas from the operation. It can become pretty painful. If you are experiencing any fever or items abnormal though, please see a doctor. As with all things gas related, this too shall pass. -
I agree with Bean. Protein is required within 30 minutes after completing a workout.

Breaking up the running training routine makes this so wonderful and addictive. Training in all three disciplines is what makes this so much fun! It's great for the change of pace! :-) I knew you could do it.

Just remember, you only have to be faster than the slowest person to escape zombies!

We don't know anything about the heat here in Las Vegas, Fiddleman. I have a Fuel Belt with 4 bottles that I use for runs up to 8 miles and then use my Camelback hydration backpack for everything else over 8. If I run in the late afternoon when it's really hot, I limit my runs to no more 4 miles. Problem is that even my 4:30 am runs can be at 85 degrees so there are times when I have no choice but to go to the treadmill.

Still need to work on this nutrition thing but inspite of that, I was able to turn in a 4:41 in my first full marathon, Pacers were so good I probably could have finished at 4:30 but my quad knotted up at 25 miles and I walked from 25 to near the finish before jogging across the finish line. Couldn't stand the thought of walking across the finish line. Even though I thought it might be stupid at the time, I biked to the airport and home for my flight to the marathon. Turns out the bike ride home was one of the best things I could have done to loosen me up. Legs feel great.

No drinking 30 minutes before or after meals?
massindex replied to nessieberry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Among the reasons are: - you need to get your protein in and liquids take some space, replacing where your protein would go - liquids help food bypass the digestive process so you don't get the nutritional value from your food. If you have watched those championship hot dog eaters, they soak their food in water before swallowing it. That way it doesn't go directly into the stomach and they can eat more. You eat more without feeling full. -
BTB - nice job! I took it easy on my trail half marathon, mostly because the course was all sand or boulders. It would have easy to not do it but I'm glad I did.

That's why I consulted with the doctors first. The pain was gone after about 12 hours and they couldn't find anything wrong with me. The doctors said because they couldn't find a reason, it could come up again or it might not. Without an answer as to the reason, they said you should live your life and deal with it if it comes up. Running is not going to bring it on.

Tuesday night came down with severe intestinal pain and my wife convinced me to go to emergency. They diagnosed me with pancreatitis and admitted me. After a couple of days of poking, prodding and running every test they could think of, they couldn't find the cause. My cardiologist and my gastrointestinal specialist came by to talk with me. After filling me on their inconclusive results, they asked if I had any questions. I said, "Just one. I have a half marathon on Sunday. Can I still run it?" The cardiologist looked at me said "You know you're in the hospital, right?" I laughed and told him yes but I was serious. They looked at each other, shrugged, and told me they couldn't think of a good reason not to do it if I felt good enough. Picked up my bib number yesterday. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but they just don't understand the highs. It can be a little addictive and I know I already have an addictive personality. Am I out of my mind? I feel pretty damn good, other than a little sluggish from breaking my training regime.

Your body becomes a creature of habit and if you go into starvation mode, it will hold on to every calorie it can find. Dr. Oz had some good advice one day. He said you body needs a state of confusion. This applies to your food and your exercise routine also. Try upping you intake every third or fourth day to 2,000 calories (smart calories and not fat calories). Also, change up your exercise routine. If you are only running, adding a day or two of swimming or biking. Keep it aerobic though. While weight training can be beneficial, you probably don't want to lose the edge you are building up with your endurance. Don't worry about your speed. As long as your heart rate is accelerated and in an optimal zone, you are doing fine. Also look at it this way. What's the alternative? Six feet under?

So the process is that in water up to 78 degrees, you can wear a wetsuit. Under the wetsuit I wear my tri-suit, which is a one-piece combimation of bike shorts and a race singlet. Under that I usually have compression clothing. When you come out of the water, you strip the wetsuit off, jump on the bike and start the bike portion, When you finish the bike, you run, all of this in the tri-suit. Sprint tri's are only 5K runs, Olympic distance is a 10K run, 70.3's involve a half marathon run and 140.6's involve a full marathon. Try it one time with a Sprint Tri. All the different training requirements breaks up the training monotony of a single event.

PdxMan - I'm thinking we are all in physical therapy at this point, you're just on a different training plan. I know it's got to be tough to not be out there but the last thing you want is any kind of set back that keeps you away from what you love to do.

How's everyone doing these days? If you are anything like me, it's the start of the season. I have a triathlon this weekend, a trail half marathon the next weekend, another triathlon the weekend following and then two weeks from that I have a full marathon. So if you don't hear from me again, remember that it was I that decide to kill myself by booking so many races back-to-back-to-back-to-back! Good luck everyone.

You all are doing some amazing things out there. Keep it up!

Results are in and I'm back on the circuit. Threw a high protein count but that was because I did a half marathon the day before my chems so the doctor says I go back to training.

My HRH is 42 and my doctor didn't have a panic attack over he but became concerned because of the other items. My issue was that he had a baseline comparison from 2 years ago to what the EKG displayed this week. It wasn't about the obesity but about the the combination of the enlarged heart and some thickening of the heart muscle due to what he thinks is athletic heart syndrome. If it turns out to be AHS, then it's just a matter of making sure that there is no underlying condition causing the thickening of the heart walls. In my case, it's likely brought on my aerobic activity of more that 5 hours per week. Just have to wait and see but I'm very hopeful this is just an arrhythmic blip, so to speak. :

I'm not sure I could help with this kind of race. From my review of the website, its a little like a Tough Mudder race. If that's the case, it's less about racing and more about strength and team work. Are you racing with anyone else? From my experience in this kind of race, first time through you can really use a teammate to help you through the obstacles. Good luck. It looks like a lot of fun.
