Just like so many others I have struggled with my weight my whole life. I must have lost and gained 100 s of pounds......even though I kept gaining an extra 10 lbs a year I was managing my weight ,,still it was over 200 lbs . then a severe accident caused me to get a spinal cord injury......I was in the hospital 3 1/2 months physical therapy for a year and a half and still had severe pain with walking......so even though I did not eat like I did before the accident I watched the lbs creep on. I could not exercise it just was to painful. Dieting was just out of the question when my mind was fixated on my ability to function and if I would ever walk again. I am a RN so I had thought about the lap band many times but just would talk myself out of it.....One day a coworker told me she had gotten a lap band and I started thinking again about getting one. I knew carrying around 240 lbs on my disabled legs and damaged spinal cord was harder because of the weight...so I made a decision I would jump thru whatever hoops they asked me to.......I started out my 6 months of nutrition classes and started making changes in my addictions...the first month I stopped the candy, next month cut down to 1 cup of coffee in the morning, this month I struggled with stopping diet soda, haven't quite got there yet, and July 1st I started on low carb diet just to get me away from sugar .........so I am like half way into what I thought was going to be a long long 6 months........but I have read so much about the lap band., read 100s of posts here on lap band talk, the changing of my bad habits slowly is going to make the changes I have to make after the surgery easier, have I lost weight? Yes 10 lbs, was not trying, just changing my mindset.........I am excited to have made changes ahead of time because I know I would have been miserable having to do it all at once.....well thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Hugs Laura
