Week Four From The Loser's Bench

Today is Day 28 Post op. I pretty much feel back to normal. My energy has come back and I my incisions feel completely healed. I am supposed to be on clears still. I advanced my diet so I could make it through the long shifts at work. My nutritionist recommended this. I just started out with greek yogurt and refried beans. I also made an egg drop soup which was so delish. Good news!!! I finally found a protein shake I like, it's the Premier Protein Shake from Costco. Doesn't taste chalky to me at all. I have only tried the chocolate but will try vanilla next time I go. I am getting a little over 60gms of protein a day from the shakes and food. It is a huge relief since I was fearing dealing with a heart condition while being completely bald since I was having such a hard time getting shakes down. More good news, the scale finally moved. I am down to 225.8 which is a 24.2 lb loss since surgery. I haven't really been exercising since I had zero energy and had been sore. Now that I am feeling better I am going to look into getting a gym membership to hopefully get the weight loss going again. Overall, I feel more comfortable with my sleeved body. I do occasionally worry that any little twinge I feel near my stomach might be the start of a leak. I am not as apprehensive as I was initially though. I look in the mirror and see my face and body just can't believe how much it has changed at 24lbs. I can't even imagine what I will look like at 100 lbs down. I can't wait!

    Food Porn ( Graphic)

I LOVE hot wings and anything spicy. I am really hoping that my sleeve will tolerate spicy again. These days I am craving the weirdest thing: Dill pickles, the crunchy Claussen dill pickles. Someday.....

Week Three From The Loser's Bench

Today is day 21 post op. The time has just flown by. Not that I mind, I can't wait to feel more like me. I went back to work and that was a challenge. My first day back was a 12hr shift at a busy Urgent Care Clinic. My co-workers were great and did all of the heavy lifting, physically. They really helped me out a lot. I did well getting in my fluids per the usual was having a hard time getting in my protein shake. There was a moment where I just so wiped out I thought I was going to have to go home. Luckily a doctor friend took me out for lunch and got me a protein smoothie and wouldn't take me back until I was better. It brought me back to life, I finished the shift and went home and fell right asleep. Since then I have been doing much better at work. I think my energy level is improving too. The main thing I have been dreading about going back to work is the attention. Only a couple of people know that I had a VSG, when I had my gall bladder removed and hiatal hernia repaired. A couple of people mentioned to me that they could tell I had lost weight. One doctor told me in front of the nursing staff that I was becoming eye candy. His words not mine. I could have died. I didn't think the weight loss would be so noticeable so soon. I had my first follow up with my surgeon. He says I am progressing well. He wants me to continue on liquids and get in those protein shakes. I can't wait until week 5. Overall, I feel much better physically. The largest incision is almost completely healed. This week's weight loss is 1 lb. I weighed in at 226.4. I was a bit disappointed but I know I am doing the best I can for me right now and my body has been through a lot and this is a part of the process. My total weight loss is 24 lbs down since surgery.

    So Frustrated And Angry

I would ask to speak with the office manager. Just so that they are aware this is happening. If they think about it, not only is this an inconveinence caused to you, but also they are missing out on revenue right now. I think you should at least get an apology. I work in the medical field and that would not fly at any of the offices I have worked at. Stay strong, it will happen for you.

My First Week On The Loser's Bench

For so many misinformed years I thought that surgery was the easy way out. How wrong was I? I am working so hard to make sure I am hydrated enough, getting in all of the supplements and getting out for walks. What I have learned is that, it takes a lot of planning and effort to be successful which is certainly not easy. Day 7 post op today. I am feeling pretty good. I also had my gallbladder removed during surgery and the largest incision site is still pretty sore. Mostly due to a couple vomiting episodes and a coughing fit I had . The other ones don't bother me at all I have a total of 8. I have only taken a half dose of the pain medication. My post op diet is a sugar free clear liquid diet, no protein shakes until day 8 and this is until week 4. I was feeling pretty weak so I added regular juice and Gatorade I will stop it once I start protein shakes tomorrow. I can't wait. It blows my mind that I am excited for a protein shake. Thus far, I am not feeling any hunger which I hope sticks around. Pre op I always felt hungry and was constantly thinking about food. My starting weight was 278. My weight the date of surgery was 250. My weight today......drumroll please.........239!!! Looking at 239 on the screen is unreal, I can't remember the last time I weighed that. I love my sleeve!!!!!
  15. Congratulations!!!! I look forward to seeing you on the loser's bench.
  16. Keep pushing for it and it will happen. I went through a job change and 2 surgeons(they both left their practice). I didn't think it was ever going to happen for me. I started the process in March and should have had surgery in October, things worked out the way they did and I was sleeved 12/6/11. It will happen for you, keep your eye on the prize
  17. A little anxious my first day back to work is tomorrow....

  18. I am 9 days post op. I have been on a clear liquid diet since and was told to add Protein shakes back in on day 8. Well, I am really struggling getting them down. Pre op I didn't have any problems with them I would add milk to them and it was fine. Post op the surgeon allows for Water only to be mixed for a total of a 4oz shake since he says it is quicker to get down and protein will lose efficacy if sitting out to long. I do have a variety of different flavors and brands and they all seem to smell and taste bad no matter what flavoring (crystal light, flavored splenda, torani syrup) I add doesn't make it better. I even tried the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth. I am literally pinching my nose and throwing the shake back in the medicine cup. It takes me about an hour. I broke down today and bought a premade Muscle milk for some protein even though premade shakes are a no on the doctor's list. It says it contains no milk, oddly enough and it's first ingredient is water. Did any of you have issues with this? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Week Two From The Loser's Bench.

Today is day 14 post op. Overall I feel like I am doing ok. I am doing well getting in all the supplements. However, I am really struggling with getting the protein in. I was allowed to add them back on day 8. I was actually excited about it until I tried it. Having read about so many people's experience with protein post op, I prepared myself and had a lot of different types on hand. I didn't expect to have problems as I didn't pre op. As soon as I put the cup to my mouth I could smell it and it was awful. I put it in the one oz medicine cups I have and was just trying to get it down with my nose pinched. Soon enough I started gagging. I gave up on that one and later tried a different brand with the same result. I went through so many others. I was so frustrated with myself, I kept telling myself just get this down and you will feel better and heal faster. The self talk wasn't helping. I ended up posting a topic for advice and got help. I bought some pre made muscle milk light and have been doing just fine with that. Pre made shakes are a no on my doctor's list but it fits all of his criteria for protein shakes. I will stay on it until Week 4 when I can add in soy or almond milk to the protein powder. Hopefully that will help. I go back to work on Friday, which I am a bit nervous about. I get tired pretty easily. I will be on light duty, no lifting anything over 5lbs. It's still a 12hr shift at an Urgent Care Clinic. I weighed in today for a total of 227.4 lbs that is a total of 23 lbs lost post op. My surgery weight was 250lbs, needless to say I am pretty happy about it.
  20. I completely understand what you are going through. Tomorrow I will be 14 days out. I am on sf clears until 4wks post op. 6wks total if you count 2 wks pre op. I was allowed protein starting day 8. It's hard when you see that others are quickly able to move on to other foods and drinks. I did allow myself Gatorade and regular juice when I was feeling weak though. It's definitely a struggle for me too. I have to say my diet is far more strict.....no meat until week 9?! Hang in there sis.
  21. Thanks for the update. Sounds like you are doing well. I am almost 2 weeks out and the biggest incision is still a bit sore, much better though.

    Protein Help

Thank all of you for the much needed advice. My plan is pretty strict no mushies until week 4! No meat until week 7. I do plan on checking out the Premier shakes tomorrow. I have gotta do something. I go back to work in a week 12hr shifts will definitely need the energy.
  23. I didn't have to have my Mirena removed. I hear you on the pain part though. The doctor felt that enough was done to prevent clots during surgery it wasn't necessary. Each doctor is different, just sharing my experience.

    Bad Taste In Mouth

I am not driving mostly because the big incision is still pretty sore and it wouldn't be comfortable yet. I feel a bit weak too. My post op diet is clear liquids for 4weeks. I was allowed to start protein today and am having a tuff time getting it in. I bought different types they all just taste so chalky. I didn't feel that way before. I can't use milk, water only. What is your post op diet like? How do you feel overall?
  25. Congrats to you! One tip make sure to make sure you are well hydrated the day before surgery. It's much easier to get the IV started that way.
