    October Surgeries!!

Hi Everyone Even though I was starting a cold the day before surgery I was able to have my operation. This was due to the cold not being on my chest so made it okay to have the op. My first 36 hours for me were very very tough for me. This was because it was hard to get my pain under control and I also didnt sleep the first night due to the 'Night Terrors' , as one of my doctors desribed it. This can happen when people who use CPAP machine for sleep apnea. When I returned from surgery the nurses forgot to set up my CPAP machine for me to use. This resulted in the night terrors as everytime I was about to sleep I was jolted awake again by my body, due to sleep apnea. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone, so if you are reading this and have a CPAP machine dont forget to remind the nurses how important it is for you to use it. And for them to put your mask on you if you are still not with it after surgery. I wish everyone every success with their operations. Take care Sue

Anyone in here from the UK ?

Hi Jen Well I had a long journey to getting my WLS BUT it may not be the same for you in Yorkshire. My doctor referred to an Endocrinologist to double check that there was no other reason for my weight gain and also checked me for diabetes, sleep apnoea and many other co-morbities often associated with obesity. I then had to do a monitored diet program, diet pills etc to see if I could sustain weight loss in this way. (This was carried for over a year but I think the average is 6 months). In the end I was getting so down about it all I started over eating again. My BMI shot up and I then qualified for WLS surgery.... Not the ideal situation for anyone. So in all, by the time I get into surgery (Oct 2010) I would have been on my journey for over 3 years. BUT please don’t get down hearted when you read 3 years as I don’t think that is the norm. My Health Authority are very strict about who they allow to have Bariatric Surgery. Your referral will go to your local PCT, which is where the funds for your surgery will come from. They in turn will send you a letter and advice which hospital will do your surgery and then that hospital will contact you in due course to start their procedures with you. I hope that has helped??? I don’t think my journey is typical in terms of the time it has taken. I had to go this route as I don’t have the money to go privately. I’m sure your journey will be a lot easier..... Wishing you all the best Take care Sue

Anyone in here from the UK ?

Hi I'm in the UK, down in Hampshire. I have a high BMI and am due to have my surgery in London on the NHS. I believe each county or health district has a different set of criteria for Bariatric Surgery. I have had to jump through quite a few hoops to get it but I am now 15 days away to getting Sleeved in London. You may find your journey easier in Yorkshire but the BOSPA website should give you a lot of advise to help you out on citeria for your region. I have also found the boards here to be very helpful in my journey. Take care Sue

18 hours post op - photos

Thanks so much for posting your pictures. Its so helpful and I'm due to be sleeved in London in 3 weeks !!!! I hope the rest of your recovery continues to go well. Take care Sue
  16. Welcome to the Forum. You have come to the right place to ask questions, seek advice and read others experiences. The sleeve sounds a good option for you if you need to take medication as there is no malabsorption and you will still have some stomach left to help with this. The sleeve is safer option for people with higher BMI and would give you a good starting point to help you reduce your BMI and help with other health probelms that you might have. I can understand your concerns and worries and this forum should help you that as well as your surgeon. I wish you well in making your final choice of WLS and hopefully with all the help on this forum you can make the right decision for you. Take care Sue

    450 pounds, 23 y old, TERRIFIED!

Hi Emma, Welcome to the forum and hello from over the Water in Hampshire, UK. I understand your concerns as its hard not to discount the worries of surgery. Don't forget that your surgeon will be high experienced and also the whole operating team with be specially trained to deal with larger patients. Try to think of the possitives and how you life with change so much over this next year. I haven't had surgery yet but will be soon. I will be thinking about you and hope you post some updates so we all know how you are doing. I'm sure you will be a great success!!! Take care and keep smiling, Sue

    October Surgeries!!

Hi I have already started my pre-op diet as I have to do mine for 6 weeks. I am really struggling at the moment !!! I have so got to get my head in gear as making the liver smaller for the op is best thing. I did make a 'goodbye' and tried to say goodbye to all the things I love and now I am having what I can only describe as panic eating ... I wish there was a way to 'fix' my brain !!!! Any tips ??? Take care Sue

    Laser Hair Removal?

Hi Kansas. Im still pre-op but I have had laser hair removal on my under arm hair two years ago. The hair there was extensive, and was very strong. I am pleased to say that the treatment worked really really well. I get a tiny bit of regrowth now even though I still have a hormone imbalance because of being overweight. So I'm really sure it will work for you when you want to give a try. Take care Sue

    Pre Op appetite?

Hi Dave, I have just gone through something similar. In the end I made a list fo all the foods I wanted to say 'good-bye' to .... It helped a lot. .. I ate far far too much but I am also happy that I got to say a final good bye to different foods. (I didn't want to crave them on my pre-op diet.) Hope that helps , I don't think you have anything to worry about .... :scared0: Take care Sue
