Anybody Watch Ruby?
Roseib replied to notsochubbybritneyspears's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Who is Ruby? -
There are a number of us late 50s and early 60s even a couple in their 70s. We seem to be doing fine. Have you looked at the age-specific subforum toward the bottom of the home page? You might find thst interesting

I usually get the best fares on the airlines' websites.

Surgery in 10 Days - Can't sleep with my CPAP
Roseib replied to Virginia S's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Interesting. They wouldn't let me use my cpap right after surgery. How long have you had it. Took me a while to get used to it. I had trouble at first like yoy Virginia and switched to a mask thst has a kind of suction effect. Sticks to the face without having the bands real tight. Hopefully by summer I won't need it any more. I'm like rootman though on thst I dnt want another test. -
Good luck. The worst part is waiting. Once you get to hospital there is so much prep stuff to be done, it goes quickly. Will be sending positive thoughts your way

The thought of putting an "unnatural" hormone in my body (I.e. One I'm not naturally producing) is enough to put me off - even if people do have success with it. I'm with Rootman on this.

Wow so sorry. How right you are to check things out with doctor. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Dillards has a lot of nice plus size clothes @ www.dillards.com. They ship them on hangers in a box not in a shipping envelope like so many online sites. I think you could find something trendy there.

Knee Arthritist Pre-VSG
Roseib replied to lkcraig316's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes the weight loss alone definitely helps. My cartilage is gone (age 63) so I will have knee replacement I imagine. Holding off a few more months until I've lost more weight to make recovery easier. I still have a lot of weight to lose but I already take less pain Med (hydrcodone) and cam walk longer and farther than 9 months ago. My balance is better. Have been using seated exercise videos but plan to add water aerobics when school is out (in education). Synvisc didn't help me when I had it several years ago at weight 290. Probably just weighed too much for it to work. -
sucker punched last night
Roseib replied to doggz109's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You made me smile. I had my moment the day after surgery sitting in hospital while watching 4th of July TV ad for hot dogs. The thought flashed into my head "omg I'll never be able to pig out on hot dogs again!" then I had to laugh because the thought was "pig out on" not never eat them again. Its your choice if you ever want to eat a burger with bun again. You will be able to eventually. You will just be restricted as to how much of it you can eat and you will be satisfied with what you can eat. The sleeve is great that way. -
I used eas carb advantedge ready to drink after surgery. I didn't like any powder mixes as drinks although I used the eas powder version to mix with sf pudding. Labrada lean body Rtd is my favorite but it is really expensive per bottle. But like feedyoureye said everyone has different favorites. You can get some free samples online. I think there is a thread on that somewhere.

Having a hard time finding hood tasting calcium..
Roseib replied to Smof4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Vivactive and other chews I've found in groceries taste decent but are not calcium citrate which a lot of us have been instructed to use. They tend to be calcium carbonate. -
Having a hard time finding hood tasting calcium..
Roseib replied to Smof4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely bariatric advantage re taste. Oregon daisy makes good point as each Chew is only 250 mg so have to take 2 3x day. Celebrate calcium chewables taste good. I use cherry tart but they are grainy and feel like chewing sand. Letting it dissolve a little in the mouth before chewing helps the grainy texture though. -
Going to Mexico and worried
Roseib replied to EJStorm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you can't do the walking ask for assistance to the gate - wheelchair or electric cart. They do that all the time for people who are mobility impaired for many different reasons. Ask for assistance in lifting your luggage into the overhead. It'll be ok. -
Day 6 post op still lots of diarrhea, is this normal?
Roseib replied to warrior68's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Took a while for me too but it was worst the first 7-9 days as I recall. -
Scared and Not telling anyone
Roseib replied to Coookies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went alone to hospital but Friends and family knew about it (family in another state and friends had to work.). Just know waiting is the worst. Once you get to hospital there is so much to do it goes really quickly. I think you should tell someone even if family member far away. Peace of mind that someone knows more than anything. My opinion anyway. Good luck keep us posted -
Coops, doctors vary some on the calorie thing. My doctor says 800 to 1000 now that I'm months out. Kept it 600-800 until 6 months. But I've found I lose best at right around 800. It is still hard to get in 800 calories many days with just 3 meals no snacking as he requires.

I asked my pcp what he thought about me getting wls and he thought it was a great idea. Has been totally supportive before and after and does my bloodwork so my insurance will pay for it.

I'm sure you'll do fine. A lot of it is attitude and how one deals with any problems that arise (if they do). At least that's my opinion. With respect to exercise, I have been using seated exercise DVDs. I particularly like the Chair Dancing series by Jody Stolove. They are a lot of fun and more vigorous than the other seated DVDs I have. She has both aerobic exercise and toning and resistance ones. There are many others out there, though, that are for elderly or disabled people who can't stand up to exercise. I'm also thinking about ordering Chair Boxing to work on upper body. Sounds like a good way to deal with work stress as well as helping body! (I found these on amazon.com) I think you are right about water aerobics being the best option for us folks with terrible knees. I want to use a particular gym and given my schedule this academic year (I'm in education), I can't make most of the water aerobics class times. I plan to join and get involved as soon as school lets out in May. Oh, there is also a DVD a friend got for me that has many seated positions -- it's called Yoga for Arthritis but I don't remember the name of the woman who made it. It's good for relaxation and reducing stress and working on flexibility. I will say that even though I have a lot of weight left to lose, despite the person I have already lost, I do get around a lot better, take less pain med, and can stand for longer periods of time. My balance is better. Good luck on your journey!

Can you eat 99% fat free ground turkey breast? Or drink low fat chicken or beef broth? My preop diet was protein shake for breakfast and lunch and for dinner palm size of food - half low fat protein and half veggies. I ate a lot of turkey and fish. Only allowed water otherwise. I know what you mean about sweet from the early postop diet. I feel i'll never eat another sf pudding rven now almost 9 months out.

My doctor addressed this very issue at support group this winter. He said we tend to base our goal weight onthe ideal weight charts but that many people find they stabilize at a somewhat higher weight which is the right weight for their bodies. In other words told us. it was natural and not to worry about it.

P.s. If you haven't done so suggest you read the age-related subforum for those in their 60s and 70s

Hi I had surgery June 29 last summer. I had/ sleep apnea and severe osteoarthritis in knees but otherwise no comorbidities. Oh forgot to say I was 62 at tome of surgery. Of course everyone is different but all went fine. No problems. My surgeon said I did better than a lot of his younger patients. Still doing fine. No complications. Of course I picked the VSG because of my age and the lower risk of complications it posed compared to bypass. The only problem for me has been not being able to execise as vigorously as people who don't need knee replacement.

11 days post-op and, oh, the constipation!!
Roseib replied to VSGandMe2011 (DisneyMomma)'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At almost 9 months out I eat oatmeal once a week. That helps me a lot. I just make sure it's an otherwise low carb day. Don't know if you can eat it yet though.
