Wow! That's a particularly good insight... I, like most of us, often forget to look that far into the future!

On obesityhelp most of the DSers report that their stomachs pretty much hold what they did pre-surgery once they're a couple of years out. For the Duodenal Switch 75% of the stomach is usually removed (for VSG alone it's 85%). Verticalsleevetalk is only a couple of years old, so I wonder if we'll start to see reports of this on there. When you think about it most people looking for WLS have managed to defeat simple restriction. I remember as a kid not being able to drink a whole can of coke or eat a whole apple (the first half would be brown by the time I made it round to the other side and that was just doing a single line across the middle). Alas that feels like a lifetime ago!

I've read that 40% of RNYers dump, but that dumping can backfire as a deterrent as it can cause major fluctuations in blood sugar and ultimately result in people consuming more calories to try and bring their blood sugar levels back up.

I'm 10 months out and have never felt nauseous nor have I vomited. I was on Clear Liquids for the first week and stayed in hospital for 3 nights post op so I could have longer on the drip, so I really didn't have much to feel nauseous with. Good luck!

BTW miso's good too if you can't get hold of chicken stock you like.

You can search youtube for videos of people dumping. Check this one out There is early onset and late onset dumping, but the sleeve shouldn't really make people dump. A lot of people don't do well with milk early on and maybe you had a little too much for your sleeve. IMO it doesn't sound like dumping. Just avoid having that again for a while and then only have it in small quantity.

Where are you going for surgery? I went to Mexico and the meds prescribed there were really expensive, so I wish I'd have got mine back home. I was prescribed Nexium, painkillers (can't remember the brand, but suppository ones will be OK post op) and anti-coagulant injections. Not all docs prescribe anti-coagulants so you should check with yours. Lip balm is really handy to have for the first few days post op. I really didn't read much post op as I was so tired and sleepy from the anesthetic. Some sort of chicken broth would be handy. I really went off sweet stuff post op (I've read about this happening to others too), so savory is quite nice. I also enjoyed yogurt drinks when I was allowed full liquids and creamy tomato soup - yum! HTH

I was prescribed anti-coagulant injections for a month post op plus I wore flight socks for 2 weeks post op. Anti-coagulants are really expensive in Mex so you may want to try and get those from your PCP. I was fine flying 10 hours shortly post op from Vegas to LAX then back to London (and San Diego to Vegas a few days before that). You'd have to discuss all this with your surgeon however. I was almost exactly plane seat size at the time of my op so I can't really advise on that I'm afraid. It's admirable you're looking for psyche help - I haven't noticed much of that on here. Maybe someone else can chime in with some advice on that. Maybe there's a different forum out there better suited to this. One book that was recommended by bariatric surgeon Dr Watkins is "Shrink Yourself: Break Free from Emotional Eating Forever" by Dr Roger Gould. I've not read it just yet although I have purchased it. It gets good reviews on Amazon. HTH

That's exactly how I feel! If you're serious (ie willing to comply with Vitamin and Protein requirements) and meet the weight requirements then the Duodenal Switch really does seem to have excellent long term results. There are people over on obesityhelp doing well 10 years out from DS surgery. Bypass proves to be only short term for many as you only malabsorb calories for a couple of years and then your intestines adapt and go back to absorbing 100%, that's why many look to revise to the DS (not easy from bypass though). I'm sure DS surgery for just the intestines has to be possible for GPSers. They have been known to do just the intestinal part for diabetics in Spain, as this surgery has a 99% resolution rate for diabetes (and a significant improvement for the remaining 1%).

You have a 6 month "window of opportunity" with this procedure which is when you get the best restriction. VSG has the same "window". I've been able to eat a fair bit since I was a month out though (I'm now 10 months out and I only eat slightly less than a 'normal' person).

I had my plication at age 34. I got it done right when I hit BMI 30 after having yo-yoed back after reaching goal with WW a couple of years before. I decided that I just couldn't keep yo-yoing (was at goal with WW about 15 years ago too). I just couldn't face yet another diet. Sadly my plication hasn't worked and I'm pretty much where I started pre-surgery minus ~$10,000 (by the time I add in flights and hotels). My husband wouldn't have let me spend this sort of money if he hadn't seen me make an earnest attempt with diet and exercise first. He could see that all the weighing, counting and working out for 2 hours on a work day (4 hours weekends) just wasn't sustainable. The balance for the cost of my plication is due in the next few weeks, so once that's paid I'm seriously going to look into some sort of revision.

Congrats, that's awesome - you must be starting to feel like a new person!

Dr Watkins also said on verticalsleevetalk here http://www.verticals...291-gps-update/ that interrupted stitches are better (it's at the start of his 2nd paragraph), so I don't know why anyone would be saying anything different. If anyone out there knows what Dr Lopez Corvala does, I'd love to know. I really wouldn't expect to get a straight answer on a simple yes/no question like that from Angeles Health as I'm a post op, and as I've said the follow up from them is zero.

It's great you're doing so well Have you had any fills in your band at all? Do you feel any restriction from the band? I know it's probably hard to tell what's the band and what's the Plication, but I'm curious as to what you're impressions on this aspect are.

I don't recall signing off about anything to do with lack of restriction post op. I didn't contact the hospital re lack of restriction as I don't imagine that they'd do much about it. Especially given that they didn't email me scans of my post op barium swallow (which I was told repeatedly over the phone they'd do, until it was 2 weeks post op, at which time they said that they dispose of patient info like that). Looking at this thread here http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/11938-not-enough-restriction/ I'd already lost restriction at a month out. Dr Lopez told me that if you vomit in the first 3 weeks that can tear stitches and undo the surgery, but here I am 10 months out and I've not even come close to vomiting (ie I've not retched or anything like that), much less actually vomited. Sarah Elsekhawy who responded in the link I supplied got revised to VSG a year after getting her Plication as she never had much restriction either. She's now 2 months out from getting sleeved and doing well. She said that the sleeve didn't hurt more than the Plication (which I would've expected). HTH

I'm sorry to hear about your husband. I hope that he recovers quickly. I'm sure that the deposit and after care situation would be the same with any facility in Mexico. Dr Lopez's English seemed very good and I don't imagine you'll have communication issues (I speak Spanish and therefore didn't get to 'test' his limits).

The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) cuts out the main area that produces grhelin but the body still produces grhelin in other areas and these areas can bring hunger levels to more or less what they were pre-surgery. VSG gives you the highest chance of resolving hunger, but it doesn't resolve it for everyone - it's just that your odds are better. Plication hasn't resolved my hunger issues (I just eat a little less in a sitting but not a lot - my restriction hasn't really been sufficient to produce much weight loss). You'll find some people suggesting taking an antacid to help with hunger - although according to the medical profession this shouldn't affect hunger. In any case I did take an antacid for a couple of weeks, but it didn't help me. If you qualify for bypass then you also qualify for the Duodenal Switch (DS). VSG is part one of a 2 stage DS op (it's regularly done in one stage though). If the VSG doesn't provide sufficient weight loss or resolve your hunger, revising to a DS should still be an option. DSers have a high Protein and generally high fat diet (some have to experiment to find a level that suits them). Most DSers are satiated with a high protein and high fat diet - they malabsorb 80% fat, 50% protein and some complex carbs (they absorb 100% of simple carbs). Please don't go with the RNY gastric bypass, as it's really difficult to revise from this surgery. Also with RNY you only malabsorb calories for 2 years but you malabsorb nutrients forever! Remember Carnie Wilson when she was looking fab and posed for Playboy and now she's back over 200lbs (better than the >300lbs she started at, but she's only 5"3). BTW that wasn't a dis to Carnie, with RNY you just get the tables turned on you around 2 years out and that's why a lot RNYers seek revisions. BTW I believe that no stomach is removed with RNY, it's simply stapled off and is therefore likely to have a similar effect on hunger to plication IMO (ie when the stomach is full it's stretched and that creates the full sensation but then when empty you'll get hungry). HTH

Don't let me stop you seeking professional medical advice, but dumping does look like you're having a heart attack (an issue if you were to really have one I guess). It's more likely to occur when you've had your pyloric valve removed which happens with RNY, but as I mentioned earlier it can also happen to people that haven't had WLS.
