    Describe after diet

The first week post op I was on clear liquids. Week 2 was full liquids (basically anything you can drink through a straw). Week 3 was mushies (anything as long as it was mush). I've never used protein shakes (I'm intolerant to powdered milk). I was told to get in 60 grams of protein a day, which I guess varies with your weight/calorie intake (I started at a BMI of 30). I follow the guidelines of eating protein first, then veggies and carbs if you have space. I didn't have a pre-op diet because my BMI was 30 and they won't operate below that weight. BTW I've never been told that rice is off limits.
  2. There are some stats on diabetes here http://www.dsfacts.c...DS-and-RNY.html Resolution of comorbities RNY Type 2 diabetes 84% Duodenal Switch Type 2 diabetes 99%
  3. The feeling of fullness is about the same as pre-surgery for me. I've never vomited or dry heaved post op (my surgeon said that'd undo the stitches if it happened in the first 3 weeks - I'm 6 months out). I can almost eat normal quantities though, so I'd have to really go OTT to experience ill effects (which doesn't help with the weight loss). I get hungry just like before and probably only stay a little fuller. IMO this really would only help bingers as the restriction is too little.
  4. Weight loss will help with diabetes, but the most successful WLS for diabetes is Duodenal Switch. I've read it resolves ~99% of diabetes cases and there's a marked improvement on the remaining 1%. I've read about talk of doing just the bowel resecting part of DS on non obese diabetic patients, as that's what really makes the difference. There's plenty of info on diabetes here http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4116406/Oprahs-Diabetes-Show/ and here http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4230162/Diabetes-amp-Surgery/action,replies/topic_id,4230162/page,2/ (search and you'll find loads of hits on DS and diabetes). Dr Ungson in Hermosillo seems to be the go to doc in Mexico for DS though.

band plication vs. sleeve vs. plication

BTW VSG is more successful, something like 98.6% satisfactory weight loss versus 76.6% satisfactory weight loss for GPS IIRC. I'm afraid I don't have the link with the exact stats and citing the source on this machine. The study was done by a Greek doc (name something like G Skouras, but I'm on a terrible internet connection at the mo and find further details).
  6. When you food combine you don't mix food and drink, so if you're not having any carbs, just protein and vegetables, you could say you're food combining. To explain away the smaller portions you could say you're watching your diet or ate something earlier. HTH.

    Sleeve vs Bypass

Yeah, RNY is pretty much the only surgery you dump with (look up 'dumping' on youtube and you'll see people looking like they're having a heart attack). In theory it doesn't happen at all with DS or VSG, although there are people that say they get it a bit. To be honest I'd say I used to get a little pre-op, but not so much now I don't eat as much. I guess some people are pre-disposed to it (I have IBS, so I'd say that's part of my prob).
  8. Freaky. My weight loss figures and dates are almost the same as yours, except it was a loss of 41lbs and re-gain of 25ish. I just decided I couldn't go through WW a 3rd time (I'd got to goal twice about 10 years apart, the last time being 2009). I could still do with losing another 20lbs, so I joined SparkPeople.com trying to make that work (good ol' diet and exercise) and I'm also seriously thinking about getting a band over my plication for the final push.

Over 50, but under 100 to go!

Congrats! Great to hear you sounding so positive.

2week vs 1 week pre op liquid diet

Starting BMI of 30 here and no pre-op diet. Losing weight would've meant I didn't qualify for surgery.

    trying to quit drinking soda

Crystal Light is a popular substitute. I like the peach tea one. Get a few flavors and hopefully you'll find one that does it for you. You can also play with the strength. Post op I enjoyed mine pretty weak (I was getting sick of so much sweet stuff, jello, juice and tea which I got in the hospital 3 times a day).

WTH did I do to myself

I'm sure you'll be able to have a burger in time. Maybe just some of a small one and with just a little of the bun, but that's the whole reason you did this, right? The liquids stage is boring I know, but you'll be on mushies before you know it and then life will start to get more interesting. I think most of us go through the WTH moment, with it lasting longer for some than others. Try to think back and remind yourself of the reasons why you wanted this. Sadly not everyone loses their appetite and even those that do still have to deal with head hunger, so hang in there!!

    Weight gain

You can try the 5 day pouch test. There's info here http://www.5daypouchtest.com/ and here BTW you have a sleeve, RNYers have a pouch.

    Sleeve vs Bypass

BTW stats for Excessive Weight Loss (EWL) is 70% with VSG and 80% with DS. I'm guessing with RNY the stats may be all over the place as you've got to factor in malabsorbtion for only for 2 years and then you've got to change your diet and go low fat. Remember Carnie Wilson when she was looking fab and posed for Playboy and now she's back over 200lbs (better than the >300lbs she started at, but she's pretty short I think). BTW that wasn't a dis to Carnie, with RNY you just get the tables turned on you around 2 years out.

    Sports bras and itchiness

Sounds like it might be a fungal infection. You could try some athletes foot spray or powder.

    Sleeve vs Bypass

I wouldn't go for RNY as you only malabsorb calories with that for 2 years but you malabsorb nutrients forever!! Also many people don't like the idea of having a blind stomach that can't be scoped (ie no endoscope possible on the sectioned off part if you get an ulcer or cancer... I know this is an issue with plication too, but that isn't the question here). If you're super morbidly obese and are happy to have your bowels re-routed then you can convert to duodenal switch (or have it one stage). Converting from from RNY to DS can be very difficult (which some people convert to when they start to gain back, see here for info http://www.obesityhe...-DS-you-should/). With bowel re-routing you can end up with end up with complications too, see here for an example If you get your bowels operated on you've got to be extra diligent with your vitamins and protein (I know 100grams is the minimum for women with DS and I imagine it's the same with RNY). I'm more versed with DS and I know they malabsorb 80% of the fat consumed and a certain amount of protein (I don't know the actual figure), so it's less like being on a diet. I imagine this is the same with RNY but only for the first 2 years (you still have to be carefulish with carbs with any WLS). Incidentally I've seen one DSer in her signature say she has 3,000 calories a day (a lot must come from protein and fat and very few from carbs for her to be able to maintain goal that way). Research, research, research, as revisions can be difficult. All the best with whatever you decide!

BTW lilmissbigmouth and KarenKaren also have it. There's a thread about it here http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/15214-banded-plication/page__p__146194#entry146194

    Going Alone to Mexico

I went with my hubby, so he took care of the bags. The driver didn't park up and just dropped us off at departures. Pack very little, I didn't need half the stuff I took with me to the hospital. Slippers, dressing gown, underwear and toiletries are the main things you need. I barely ready anything as I was so sleepy after the anesthetic. Also consider getting yourself a small case on wheels. Maybe you can check with your surgery co-ordinator if you can get any assistance until you're checked in - always easiest to ask before you've paid!

band plication vs. sleeve vs. plication

Hi Nikki, I only have plication and am not getting much restriction, so have been wondering about getting a band myself. Gingy on lapbandtalk just recently got a banded plication. Genepha on verticalsleevetalk has had the banded plication for about 6 months (I think that's how long it's been). Last I heard Genepha hadn't had any fills, but at least she has the option if she stalls with the plication. It's certainly got to cheaper to do it all in one go. I'd imagine that there would be less complications with banded plication in that you'd hopefully need less fills, but there aren't that many people out there with it that I know of. Good luck with your research and keep us updated with whatever you end up doing!

Do we REALLY have to take our vitamins?

I stocked up, so I'm still taking mine just be sure I'm doing OK. I can chow down plenty since my op and don't feel very restricted.
  23. Get going on sparkpeople!! I tracked my nutrition on sparkpeople for the first time today after seeing apple-saucey's chart. It's a lot easier than I expected!!
  24. I'm on double digits for general anaesthetics and have never been told this. For the most part I've been in the healthy/overweight range, but being SMO may well be the reason you're being told this, as that also increases your risk for DVT. I'd come clean, as you don't want to die of a blood clot like Mia Amber Davis.
