Researching Newbie - Band to Sleeve ?
TijuanaPlication replied to JustFluffy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Leslie, there are few on here that have revised from band to sleeve and the ones that come to mind are LilMissDiva, Tiffykins and OregonDaisy. They're all doing pretty amazing with the sleeve. Tiffykins had complications, as you have an increased risk of leaks being a revision. They've posted plenty of stuff on here so check out some of their posts. Good luck. -
Will this be a promblem?
TijuanaPlication replied to honeydue28's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That sounds OK but I think you'd have to check with your surgeon to be sure. Conversely losing weight should help getting pregnant in the future if you wish to have more kids. -

Pregnancy question
TijuanaPlication replied to livinglifelikeitsgolden's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
It'd stall your weight loss. If it's really early out before you can consume much of anything you could get deficiencies as they baby will get the nutrients it needs and it's the mother who will have the problems. I think most people should be easily able to get sufficient nutrients through food and supplements by the time they're a month out, so the big deal would be that your 'window of opportunity' for losing weight would be closed by the time you had the baby. -
To the Emergency room
TijuanaPlication replied to FatToPhat's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Hi Lena, thanks for sharing. I hope you have a speedy recovery and that you find something that works for you. Try and not let this get you down, this is what people like LilMissDiva and Tiffykins over on VST must've felt like when their bands failed and just look at them now since their revisions. -
Joined sparkpeople.com earlier this week following a recommendation from someone on verticalsleevetalk.com Anyway, not fully into the site just yet (it'll take me a while to get used to navigating it comfortably), but it's motivating me already!! I have my new pedometer coming tomorrow (I don't like WW pedometers, sadly I have 2) and I'm contemplating getting a heart rate monitor too (the Garmin 305 is tempting me, as my Polar one has given up the ghost). Anyway, summer's here and I'm re-doubling my efforts!

I think the stats are from Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies but they are commonly quoted figures.

Productive burping and difficulty eating things like raw veggies are another couple of problems I've heard about. I've read that some bandsters have difficulty eating healthy stuff and they end up eating bad stuff as a result.
-
Some experience problems like erosion, slippage and bad reflux. You're better off posting a question like this on verticalsleevetalk.com as there are a lot of ex-bandsters on there who revised to Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) and they'll be better placed to answer your questions. BTW if you're friend's considering getting her intestines re-routed then the duodenal switch (DS) is a better option than a bypass, as you only malabsorb calories for 2 years with a bypass (plus with bypass you also get dumping and can't take Non Steroidal Anti Inflamatory Drugs like ibuprofen ever). BTW the stats for Excessive Weight Loss are as follows: Band: 55% VSG: 70% DS: 80%

starving.... all of the time!
TijuanaPlication replied to april0507's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you taking an antacid? If not you could try and see if that helps. You'll need to take for a good few days for it to start taking effect. -
I've seen a small number of VSGers report never losing hunger. The problem seems to affect a lot more GPSers though (me included). BTW re grhelin, the part that produces that hormone is pretty much removed with VSG but it is produced elsewhere too and I guess in some people the rest probably ramps up production to compensate.

At 6 days post op you should only be on liquids (most likely clear ones), which will go straight through your sleeve. Once you get to mushies you should start feeling fuller for longer. I was permitted full liquids at 1 week (ie anything that you can suck through a straw), so yogurt drinks helped me. Maybe you can try some protein shakes and I remember things like cream of tomato really filling me up - obviously assuming you have the OK from your surgeon.

Good luck! BTW you may want to check out http://www.sleeveplicationtalk.com It's part of the same family of forums.

New to this site .. and to Surgery
TijuanaPlication replied to piratess's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Welcome to a fellow person from the UK. Are you talking about www.gastricwrap.com? They seemed reputable but had a minimum BMI requirement of 35 so I ceased investigating at that point (they operate at a lower BMI in Mexico). Good luck! -
Low BMI and still having VSG

BTW I didn't put the link on the surgeon's name below. He's obviously paid for a hyperlink to go in when his name's used. -

We have to judge the doc. That's precisely what you do when you choose one. There's a lot on here and other WLS forums about Dr Almanza, so investigate for yourself and make your own decision. Like Meggie I don't judge patient as we're all in the same boat, just to different degrees - or lbs! -
Is there a point where it becomes dangerous?
TijuanaPlication replied to 1-4-Many's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't worry. You have a lot of swelling and that should go down a lot in the next week or 2. Don't wish it away too much, as you'll miss it somewhat when you're restriction lessens. -

TijuanaPlication replied to 1-4-Many's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow Kelly, that's very low!! You probably need to get some juice in to help with your blood sugar and the dizziness. I know you're meant to have calorie free drinks, but 350cals isn't sustainable (and you're going to start losing muscle). The hospital gave me apple juice (as well as tea, broth and jello) in the days following my surgery, so I'd use it in the short term until some of your surgery swelling goes down and you can get in some real food. -
Need MOTIVATION to go to the gym!
TijuanaPlication replied to Curvy8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could try some workout DVDs. That way you can pretty much have your workout done in the time it takes you to get to the gym. I enjoy rebounding and Step with Caribbean Workout and "10 Minute Solution - Ultimate Kettlebell Fat Burner" is OK if you only have time for a quick workout (does strength and cardio). I'm also gonna dust off my Barry's Bootcamp DVDs as those guys are very inspiring! -

BTW see link for someone on a VLCD http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1211954/Bride-crash-diet-death--eating-just-530-calories-day-11-weeks.html The person on the link lost 3 stone which is 42lbs. FYI I do personally know several people who have done very well on these diets, so don't get scared, just be careful. -

TijuanaPlication replied to 1-4-Many's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're on very few calories, so your body is probably in starvation mode and you're therefore not losing. I'd hold off on doing anything too strenuous until you can get your calories up. Very Low Calorie Diets (these are usually around the 500 cal mark) can be dangerous and are therefore closely supervised. Protein drinks sound like a good idea, so I'd stick walking and low intensity stuff until you're getting more calories. BTW how far out are you? Sleeves tend to start stretching a bit around the 6 month mark. -
Finally Made The Decision
TijuanaPlication replied to thinkingboutVSG's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats on your decision. You have to be brave to follow all the way through, as I don't be believe that this is the easy way out. I think a lot of us have thought of trying it once more with diet alone. I wish you every success. Keep reading and keep posting - you'll get to learn a lot! -
