I found a copy of the original 5:2 docu that started this particular movement: http://leangainsguide.com/diet/igf-1-and-fasting/ it is 57 minutes long, take time to watch it, its very interesting. -
Your start date and start weight for the 5:2 method

coops! I do believe this is working for you! -
Many sources say you should not eat below your bmr. To lose weight you eat between your BMR and your TDEE. Most days of the week I eat below my BMR. I have tryed to get it up there, and sometimes I have been able to eat 1600 without gaining, but not at this time. Perhaps in Maintenance!
-
TDEE includes exercise. BMR is what your body burns just laying in bed. My BMR is around 1600. When I was adding calories to my diet trying to get it up to my TDEE I started gaining weight, and chickened out, and lowered my calories again. These numbers were done from charts, and a BodPod session I did towards the end of my weight loss the first time.... Obviously, they really don't work that well. Eating 1350 on feast days and 500-550 on fast days is working for me right now. I don't have much of a problem with that... but it is quite a bit less than the 5:2 people had in mind. Some of us are eating closer to TDEE on feast days, and some (spell the Georgia!) is eating quite a bit less some days....and losing more as well.... Im not sure what this conversation is about, but I do think about it now and then, and wonder what it all adds up to. I am happy that the 5:2 is working for me, Im usually not that hungry if I plan everything, and fast days are not that hard if I don't have other social events going on at the same time. Really, we are already eating in a life extension way to a degree... limiting calories daily... the fast component just adds one more layer to it. It will be interesting to see how this works for maintenance... going to 6:1 or even 13:1to maintain.... its not a true test, but the week I went on vacation, only fasted one day, ate what I wanted, I maintained my weight.

How was your 5:2 day today?
feedyoureye replied to Oregondaisy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sometimes I log before I go... for part or all of the day (when I know) otherwise I try to do it pretty soon after eating. It changes from day to day... sometimes I log it all late if I have been away from the computer.... I even logged 4 days after I got back from vacation... hard to remember, but I did it just to stay in the swing of things as get a bit of a view of how much I was eating in a vaycay situation.... I logged exercise too... -
When I'm Jonesing for Mexican…. 3/4 cup crushed Tomato (canned) 1 cup Water 2t chicken flavored veggie broth powder 1t canola oil 1 medium carrot sliced 1 medium sliced summer squash ( I like yellow) 2/3 cup St Ives or other veggie "ground round" type meat substitute from the refrigerator section.(two servings) onion powder chili powder mix to taste black pepper 1T parmesan cheese the kitchen sink. If you have the calories, sweet corn is a nice addition as well. Put all the ingredients except cheese in a medium pot, heat till the veggies are tender, around 15-20 minutes. pour into giant bowl, top with cheese. Makes a giant bowl of Soup. about 328 cals, 31 grams Protein and a LOT of yum! Add hot salsa if you want more kick. I like a chili spice mix with cumin, garlic , chili as dominant flavors… Can serve 2.... but I prefer to eat it all myself!

I am down 2.2 pounds from yesterday! Most of that is dropping the last bounce (hanging on for 7 days...) and then some. Gotta love that "then some"! -

Georgia! Your a losing machine! I think after we do this for 6 months or something, we need to write the author and tell him about us! Now that I think of it I did use one of my "meat ladies" paintings as an Icon.... Haha! I know, Im weird! And proud of it! I dropped the bounce and then some. 181.7 (down from 183.9)- lowest yet this year. I may get into the 70's yet! You know how new numbers look so fresh! Its voodoo thinking, but I cant wait! Daisy! At one point I kept telling myself that I was not a good photographer, and really there was some evidence to support that in my photographs! But then I realized that the only way to get better was to DO IT MORE. I started doing it more, and I got better and better. Tough love here! If you spent as much time logging as you do saying your not good at logging, it would be all logged and you would be good at logging! (said with love and a smile!) -

I'm a surrealist painter, so I LOVED your collages. I like how you mixed yours kids images in with the magazine images. Don't want to ruin anyones image of me, but now that i know I have a compatriot in art here.... 530 cals today, did fine after eating about 70% Cookies yesterday!.... -
I think its pretty flexable. Try and have some stretches with no eating. If you can pull off two 12 hour stretches that is great, if you can have another stretch in the middle of the fast day, better yet....maybe. I sometimes snack a little for breakfast and lunch and eat a "big" 300-350 cal dinner. This has worked for me. The last couple of days I have just had protein drink in the am-lunch, then dinner... that seems to work fine too. Keep it low glycemic, do what you can stick to, drink lots of liquids... because we usually get in some fluids with in our food, and we are not eating as much food, we should drink more during fasts.

Just curious...questions for those who have been doing the5:2way
feedyoureye replied to lovin life's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sorry Lovin' and 5:2 girls, I feel like an A$$. I approved her application without her meeting all the criteria. I think she is good to go in every other way, but 5:2 is the point of this group, so point well taken. K -

I don't know how I got out of the other end of today without over eating calories. My choices were horrible! I had three mini croissants, which I brought for my co-workers (yeah right!) Later I had two giant organic vegan cookies ( still full of calories, one of them was 480 calories!) I ate a low cal dinner, and lunch... and went to the gym which gave me another 250 cals burned. Logged it all. Fasting tomorrow. Fingers crossed I get back on track in the AM. -
Welcome! I think you might like the 5:2. It gets things going, and theres lots of support here for it. You came to the right place!

Check out Coops, she is still working on reaching goal at 3 years, I am doing the same thing at 2 1/2 years. There are a number of people here who have not yet reached goal, or reached it and gained some weight back. Everyone is different, and you can lose more weight even after the "honeymoon" is over. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/83844-how-many-vets-are-actually-at-goal-and-staying-there/ http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/28952-gonna-get-to-goal-wanna-join-me/page__st__1420#entry910284 and some of us in the same boat are trying the 5:2 eating system and have a private group Here: You can take a look at it, and if you want to try the 5:2, let us know and we will add you to the members. Its for people over one year who are using the system. Good luck! It is possible, but not easy for some of us! I am now 15 pounds from goal.

or ask him to put the dressing on the side and guess from there,,, rather than throw up my hands and give up, I just give it my best shot. Figure the dressing in half oil, and use your spoon to measure it out onto your salad. Close enough to keep in the game! -
I'm more like 10-12 hours too... but I make my first meal a low carb protein drink, that does not disrupt the fast chemistry. (I think I read that in the book someplace.... I'll have to find it....) Then eat other low carb choices starting around 1:30-4 pm- dinner 7 or so.

You have done great! Almost there. Then that darned maintenance!

I kept looking at the pics and saying "no way!" Glad to see the other pic, SO CUTE! PS No offense to the gal in the pics, 2 months ...she is on her way too! -
If you are over a year, have not hit goal yet or are in maintenance, but gaining... check out the 5:2 group. Read through, and try the plan, if you like it after a couple of weeks, ask to join, and we will admit you, Its a good group of Vets some as far as 4 years out in this boat. Great support and a good plan that seems to work. The group is not open to those under a year... follow your surgeons plan if that is the case. http://www.verticals...ing-the-52-way/

How many vets are actually AT goal and staying there?
feedyoureye replied to clk's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Its hard to know what some of the Vets are saying until you experience it for yourself! Early out I thought I would never be hungry again! Do try more water or drinks, protein first if you have slipped on that, protein snack.... watch the carbs....cut the sugar if you are using it. See if that helps... you are almost a year out, so if this doesn't help, join us at the 5:2 and give that a try! It does separate the real hunger from the head hunger for many. Best of luck! -
I have dieted my whole life, I lost 17 pounds when I was 10 years old! I was under 175 for years, I am 5'9". Around 20 years ago I suddenly gained 50 pounds, then slowly 30 more. I managed to stay under 257 (set point?) for years. Then I started to creep up, and nothing I did seemed to get the weight off. When I started to have other problems, blood pressure, and cholesterol... I knew I had to take things to the next level. WLS. My Bariatric Doc recommended the sleeve, and it looked SOOOO much better to me than RNY, I jumped on it. I was one of his first patients. I have been very happy with the sleeve, but never got to my modest goal (my doc never set a goal). I was about 5 pounds away from goal, when I hit a serious stall... then I gave up some accountability, and gained 22 pounds over around 4-5 months. I had long term company, a vacation to New Orleans, bone spurs that kept me from the gym and walking until I got through the whole sports medicine system... and a few other things that made it very challenging to stay on track, and in a blink... 22 pounds up. At the first of this year I got back on track, logging everything, getting a fitbit to keep track of exercise, and try a couple of eating plans to try to kick start the weight loss. I tried "eat more- lose weight" I started to gain (around 4-5 pounds) which is normal on that plan, but I chickened out because... well it was gaining weight! I then tried the Southbeach phase one... which is good, lost a couple of pounds, but lets face it, its a diet. I am a vegetarian, and that adds some extra carbs. I was still coming to VST, getting support from my buds here, but stepped that up. Some of us grouped together who had gotten to goal and gained, or others that had never made goal, and that conversation started here. Georgia introduced the 5:2 fast diet into the conversation, and some of us jumped on it around 6 weeks ago. We have had varying degrees of success, but it has had positive results besides weight loss for all of us. As of this writing, I am down 7 pounds at 5 1/2 weeks, (was at 8.8 pounds a couple of days ago) after some very slow loss (around 1-2 pounds a month). I am getting close to my lowest weight after surgery, and to goal. I had my surgery January 19, 2011, and am over 2 1/2 years out as of this post.
